Amazon.co.uk Preview With the Hitman series already well established, Danish developer Io Interactive are not exactly masters of the family friendly game. This latest effort is their most violent and shocking yet, as you take control of reluctant mercenary Kane and his schizophrenic partner Lynch. Neither character likes the other but for the purposes of the story they have to work together in a series of violent third person shoot outs. By default you control Kane, with the computer or another player taking on the role of Lynch. As the game progress you will also be able to recruit a team of up to eight mercenaries, with your reputation determining the quality of the personnel applying for the job. Ordering your squad around is easy enough but since any of them, particularly Lynch, can have completely different objectives to you, they won't always take orders - particularly if they've taken a dislike to you already - which is a real problem when you want them to administer some first aid.Although it is much more action packed than the Hitman games, there are obviously similarities between the two games, with highly interactive environments and multiple ways to approach any problem. One particular highlight already demonstrated involves a kidnapping at a rave with Kane & Lynch firing into the air to disperse a large crowd of dancers before engaging in a brutal gun battle with security guards, as the sound and music system continues to flash and blare. If the rest of the game is just as inventive with its scenarios then Io may well keep Kane and Lynch alive for a little longer. HARRISON DENT

Pain and flynch November 4, 2008 To begin with, a brief warning: MANY people have had problems getting this game to run, especially (but not exclusively) with Vista. The most common problems are "R6025 error - pure virtual function call", which nobody seems to have an answer to and which will not let you launch the game. And if the game runs, there can be a progressive slowing of the game until it freezes, which takes place over a 5 minute period, and seems to be caused by using a USB keyboard or mouse. I had both of these problems. When I tried to uninstall the game, suddenly it ran correctly and the R6025 error disappeared. The slowdown issue resolved when I installed Vista service pack 1. Many people still report problems, however.
I will base this review on the game itself though, not the issues. Unfortunately, this does not vastly improve the rating. This game is another let-down for the industry: a big name, touted as being a revelation in gaming, that doesn't deliver.
The game appears graphically dated. The characters of Kane & Lynch are well enough rendered, but nothing else is. Blocky animations make up the in-game objects like cars, vans, buildings, etc. The audio is fairly standard, but lacks bass. Even in 5.1 surround there isn't much to be said for it. Weapon sounds and engine noise, etc. have had the minimum of effort put in. In all, it doesn't make for a very immersive experience. Enough said.
The game also suffers from gameplay issues. Using cover and firing from it are always good ideas to include in a game, but are far from unique. What is more, they feel clunky here - you can walk up to a wall three or four times before you actually take the cover. The AI is LITERALLY non-existent. Cops stand there while you shoot them in the leg until they die from it. The only thing that makes this game hard is the sheer number of opponents you face. The team features are touted as being "in-depth" and "essential". They are neither. They extend to: follow me; attack this; and stay here. And they can be completely ignored with no great impact. Aiming is difficult and slow, and the car chase scenes are ridiculous.
That's not to say that the gamer does not find a few features to enjoy. The weapons are fairly cool (including the p90 SMG), and executing a bank job is something that you don't get to do very often. The lack of input into that process hurts the game - if you could plan the raid yourself, it would be great. The multiplayer is also fairly strong.
This is not the first time I have said this, and it won't be the last: If you can pick it up cheap, take it for a weekends' fun.
Don't be Put off Great game ! August 3, 2008 this game caused a bit split in the games industry hence u'll see some EXTREMELY bias reviews....one well known gamespot presenter was sacked. This said the game made by IO the makers of hitman and like that has good ai and crowds reactions....the game is a third person perspective (it would have been nice to be able to change this )following the escape of two hardened crimimals bent on revenge. The game has some great music and locations (my favorite is tokyo streets)which really enhance the gameplay.
Whilst with any game you can sit picking holes in them but on the whole this is a solid title...and at this price i would suggest picking one up :)
AMAZING!! The best game that I have for my P.C! March 26, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I didn't know what to expect when I first thought about getting Kane and Lynch Dead Men. I saw the reviews for the 360 and PS3 and thought how cool they were. So, I bought it for my P.C installed it and it works perfectly, so smooth and the graphics are amazing, just like Xbox 360, well I think anyway. Don't listen to these bad reviews, try it for yourself or you could be missing out on a great game. Anyway, bits coming of the wall, destructable environment and the best shooting game I have for my P.C and this definitely isn't going to change. If your into the gritty tales of betrayal, murder and lots of shooting, then this is a game for you!
Co-op bad bad bad March 14, 2008 Kane and Lynch Dead Men is advertised is a cooperative, multi-player online action game. To my disappointment the co-op is not online and will only work with an Xbox controller. In my opinion IO Interactive knew people would by the game based on the co-op feature and decided not state its limitations. Naturally, if I had an Xbox I would have bought that version rather than use my Xbox controller on the PC version. I am sure there is some lame excuse for the shody Co-op mode. I am sure the single player and the multi-player game is good but I still feel cheated and hope IO Interactive decide to release a patch to give us what we paid for and deserve.
Not bad February 19, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This game is pretty fun, the story is well done, but the gameplay can be a bit of a pain... You will find most the time when trying to find cover the back to wall mechanic doesn't work, it's not like Gears of War where you need to push a button to take cover this game does it automatically, which can be frustrating...
There has been some false things written about this game on a few reviews, so to correct some people. You can play Multiplayer with a silver account, host your own list server and join list servers, you cannot however join/host RANKED servers as that needs gold subscription... I have been playing the game since it came out, and I'll be honest with you, at the best of time there is no servers online for either, normal or Ranked and I'm a gold account holder, so the insinuation that you must pay 32 for Live is just silly, and would be a waste taking into consideration hardly anyone is playing anyway, the game just isn't being played.
CO-OP I can understand peoples complaints... But obviously don't realise co-op isn't online, it's offline. Yes PC has split-screen, which is why one player needs mouse and keyboard and one a 360 pad, or two 360 pads, which ever you prefer. Obviously this was a developer choice to go split screen and it stinks, especially if you have a small monitor, the other frustration you cannot get a logitech pad to work without editing the registry settings, it does work but is a pain to setup.
When you get co-op going it's pretty fun, it's a whole new story seeing the perspective of Lynch, who throughout many sections of the game is cut off, from Kane seeing his pathological episodes is pretty surreal, but fun!
