Amazon.co.uk Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter. The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles | Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat | World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever | The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes | The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world. Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity. Key Features - Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
- Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
- Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
- Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
- Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

When will you learn? November 22, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have asked ... pleaded... got down on my knees.. And requested that producers of these super games KEEP the specs down... well NO. They think we are all so naïve.. They continue to produce games that They THINK we will keep on buying more advanced computers or computer parts.. Just so the customer can play the games... WRONG. The bubble has burst... I for one have decided never to buy a game again... Surely the producers of these games. Are aware that ... not only England but the world is going though a recession... Why Oh Why can't you make the games... which are super...at the same specs............. We are not stupid. GOOD BYE.

i installed and played this game with no problems other than it was not as good as it should or could have been.if you have cod4 then save ur money and stick with that.waw has stunning graphics but i felt the game play was ordinary, also i am sure i have played very similar levels and missions on another game, moh pehaps.all in all i personally think cod4 is the best first person shooter game i ever played and after waw it still is by a long way.hopefully cod6 will be a modern era again as i think ww2 is past it's sell by date,
Miss-fire November 21, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I had to reinstall this game twice 2 hours after i bought it, then when i finally got it working i couldnt get online. When i finally got online i played the singleplayer and finished it on normal in 5 hours. Then i tried the multiplayer and couldnt get online, then when i once again finally got online i got to play the multiplayer. Most of the multiplayer maps are terrible there far too small, you will be spawn killed over and over because 40+ people on a tiny map doesnt work. Then when i leave the match and refresh the servers list to join another game all i get over and over is a "server authentication error". I then have to restart the game and the whole saga starts over.Thats not to say that there are no good points about this game there are a few ,but a few good points isnt enough.I wish i had stuck with the fantastic COD4.
Total waste of my time and money November 21, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
After the loss of two profiles, the first at 22 and the next one just as I reached level 40 the game has crashed twice, you cannot recover the lost profiles,if you check the COD web site you will find thousands upon thousands of complaints regarding this product.Buy now pay later with pure frustration at the lack of interest by the makers of this game.In fact there is now a petition on the web site to demand a refund, about the same chance of winning that one as the lotto.
