If you have an 8000 series NVidia card or better June 6, 2008 ...Don't buy this game! There is a problem with Direct X commands being dropped from NVidia drivers for the 8000 series and beyond meaning the 3D space in the tactical battlefield is all mucked up and the mouse pointer is all wrong too! Unless a fix becomes available from NVidia, SEGA or Creative, and there hasn't been for nearly a year, I would stay clear of this and the first Medieval Total War, as both have the above problem.
There are a lot of copies of Shogun and Medieval total War out there and this message needs to be spread: "If you have an 8000 series or better NVidia card don't buy this game!"
A MILESTONE IN GAMING HISTORY!!! December 29, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
DISCLAIMER: I am a Japan-buff and games based on the Sengoku period of the Shogunate Wars have to be really bad for me not to enjoy them. Now imagine how much I enjoyed one of the BEST strategy games ever!!!
SHOGUN: TOTAL WAR is admittedly such a great game in every aspect it has become a RTS game benchmark. Not to mention it has fathered the TOTAL WAR series!
Alternating between a tactical map (in which units get moved and improvements built) and the battlefield map (in which real-time unit movements and battles are fought) SHOGUN:TW has struck the perfect harmony between Turn-Based and Real-Time Strategy gaming.
The graphics are by now only a bit dated - and, on the other hand, they can truly shine even on mid-range systems today. The units are easily distinguished during battle, controlling them is done via a user-friendly interface and the issued orders are followed fast and effectively (something not true for much latter games, such as SUPREME COMMANDER).
The sounds manage to be both majestic and realistic (even after so many years, I am using them as my main WinXP Sound-Theme). Both Japanese and English is available.
Birth of an heir, earthquakes and assassination attempts by ninjas all add to the unpredictability of the gameplay. The particulars of the terrain and the weather, the troops deployment and the placement (and survival) of the general, all make the real-time battles such a unique experience! Alliances are made and broken; rebels conquered and their shock troops assimilated; Christian traders allowed or shunted. Every decision has consequences.
This is the Gold edition which includes the WARLORDS Expansion. Do not miss it!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
A MUST BUY September 21, 2004 31 out of 32 found this review helpful
SHOGUN TOTAL WAR is a brilliant game. for a fiver its amazing and the graphics are just superb for what you pay for. the game is set around JAPAN in 1542 (which increases through your campaign) and is divided by different warlords (DAIMYOS). each one is setting a goal to become SHOGUN of japan and rule all the lands of which other warlords once ruled. you start from the rags and work your way up with higher technoligy from sword to musket and skills as you select your certain type of clan which specialise in different warriors. e.g ninja , no-dachi. As you wage through your campaign you start to command thousands of troops at an epic scale and skill. And you get other little games like HISTORICAL BATTLES and other campaigns , plus you can set time back when a great MONGOL ruler called kublai khan attacks the shores of japan and wants to rule over the samurai in the 1200 hundreds. A GAME WHICH WILL KEEP YOU OCCUPIED FOR HOURS. system requirements : pentium 2 windows 95 , 98 , ME , XP (home edition) 4 x cd - rom drive 4mb direct x 8.0 compatible 3D graphics card direct x 8.0 compatible sound card mouse & keyboard : multiplayer (2-7players) -56kbps modem and TCP/IP 16mb ram 18.5 mb free hardisk space.
Very good game, a little buggy August 17, 2004 29 out of 31 found this review helpful
I used to have Shogun and play under Windows95 and later Windows98. The mixture of strategic and real time gameplay is superb, the animations give flavor to the game (although they end up being repetitive) and the range of units is excellent. The only bad thing about the game is that battles are just too big to be fun at the end, when most of the enemies are dealt with. It's a minor flaw, though.I bought this game after playing Medieval TW just to get a look at the Mongol Invasion... and found it very buggy under Windows XP... flashy screens, crashes to desktop... tried everything at the Total War forums but I finished uninstalling the game. So, as a conclusion, I fondly recomend this game to anyone still using Win9x, but be careful if you're going to play it under Windows XP.
A Wonderful Strategic Game August 4, 2004 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is an amazing strategic game that has 2 main screen types. The first is a map of Japan, with all the 60 provinces labeled. It also shows your men and any other troops you can see. The second is a battlemap, which differs depending on which province in being fought in and whether a castle is being used. There is also a minor screen type where the throne room is shown. You can turn different objectives on for example you might put it on keep your clan alive for 70 years. Or you could set the objective of eliminating the rival clans. There are 2 other possible objectives and they are capture 40 out of 60 provinces and capture every province. There are 4 difficulty levels. In each provine you can build buildings and, if you have the right buildings, units. As well as fighting units you can train assasins and 'shenobi' (spies). I think this is a great game and I hope you found this reveiw helpful.
