Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Preview
On the face of it The Godfather isn't an obvious movie to be made into a video game, what with it being more than thirty years old and staring a lot of middle age men in hats. On the other hand it is incredibly violent; and morally ambiguous enough to make an excellent period version of Grand Theft Auto…which is exactly what this appears to be.

Although lots of missions from and inspired by the movie are promised you actually play a completely new character and control them over a period of ten years, between 1945 and 1955. During this time you get to take part in all manner of mobster type activities including managing protection rackets, assassination missions and full blown gang wars against the five different mob families in the game.

Despite all the big name stars lending their voices and faces to the game it's actually New York that seems to be the main star with a highly impressive, if somewhat sparsely populated, virtual city. The graphics are excellent, although it remains to be seen just how much variety there is to the missions, considering the game can't really go to some of the more surreal excess of Grand Theft Auto. So even if this isn't quite an offer you can't refuse, it's at least looking like one to be taken very seriously. --Harrison Dent

4 out of 5 stars A very good game.   July 9, 2007
The Godfather is a hugely playable game, I have played it through 6 or 7 times and still find new things to do. The game sticks very closely to the plot of the film and must be given credit for that.

The opening scene has you playing as a member of the Corleone family, this is the basic training for the game such as movement and unarmed combat, after completeing this you see a short cutscene and your character is killed. The next scene shows the wedding of Don Corleones daughter. A woman who we learn to be the wife of the dead man enters and begs Don Corleone to save her son who has fallen in with a bad crowd. The Don sends Luca Brasi in time for you to get revenge on the gang members who were beating you up.

The game soon teaches you the basics and allows to roam free quite quickly. You can extort shopkeepers, buy out racketeers, rob banks, corrupt police officers and generally do the kind of things you would expect in a Godfather game. You must then climb the ranks by completeing various missions, from being an idle associate so a made man, the underboss/consigliere and finally maybe the Don of the Corleone family and if you stick at the game long enough... Don of New York!

Some peolpe may criticise it for not being realistic sometimes, such as being to kill 10-15 people without the police bothering you as long as you line the correct pockets, but it makes it fun. You cannot help but feel proud when you place a perfect headshot on a rival family underboss from 2 metres away without him realising you were there.

The rival families are the same as in the film, the Tattaglias, Cuneos, Straccis abd the Barzinis. They play a huge role in the game as you may have to fight your way through 6 or 7 guards to reach the shopkeeper but you still feel proud when you do. The street fights with other families are brilliant and really make you grin evilly when you see 4 or 5 Cuneos who are chasing you get mown down as you fly past the guards on the Corleone compund.
The compounds are crucial to the game as you must control them all to control New York. Compunds are some of the most heavily guarded installations in the game and can be brutes to try and conquer; however when you do so, you cannot help but realise how easy taking out business guards actually is and really help you in the game.

All in all The Godfather is a brilliant game, by all standards and definitely is a requirement to all video gamers collections; if you are a fan of the films or not, you cannot help but like the game. Apart from a few minor problems such as only a few types of vehicle, The Godfather is pure excellence.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not good enough   October 2, 2006

Firts of all, a three star rating is perhaps a little harsh, GODFATHER is better than a three star game, but this falls just short of four stars, so three is all it gets.

It really is a game full of guilty pleasures; extorting money out of local businesses, bribing cops and starting shootouts on the streets of New York.

This is a good game, great fun and overall is very playable. The programmers deserve credit for sticking so closely to the plot of the film, working missions around events that hapened in the motion picture.

The little niggling problems are what makes me give this a three star rating. I found the control system to be a little tricky at times, especially when fighting mano-a-mano or fighting in enclosed spaces, it's sometimnes hard to see whats going on. It's all too easy to get lost in the vastness of the game, especially when you are racing around looking for a specific place against a time limit. I found myself having to consult the map almost constantly, as the small onscreen navigational map is pretty much useless. A few pointers in the right direction wouldn't have gone a miss. Gunfights can be confusing as well. When there are multiple enemies, you are never really sure where you are being shot from and it can take too long to target manually so you rely upon auto aim which often targets the wrong person.

The missions vary from ridiculously easy to the ridiculously difficult. For instance, you are expected to assault the rival families compound and plant bombs. All on your own! I can barely get near the place before a neverending supply of foot soldiers cuts me in half. Surely the Corleone 'family' could spare a few goons to give you a hand!!!

Its fun to be a gangster but after a while you'll either be bored with the repetition or just plain frustrated.

This game well took me by surprise, it is free roaming which alot of people including myself didnt get from looking at the cover. Like a 1940's gta, with a sick story line keeping you involved, you can extort, commit bank heists, and assasinations and that is outside of the main missions! There are 5 cities and similar rival gangs to take over and wipe out, which keeps you going for a while. I like the customization of your character including looks and aparrell, this adds a touch of class to the game, and you can change his sharpness as he moves from an outsider to a capo all the way to don. This game is a quality buy, i paid about 20 quid and im chuffed. It could have had included more cars including customization, but that is about it, it has so many more pros so if your a gta fan-include this game in your collection. IN A NUTSHELL GET IT!!

This game is fantastic i have had it for around a week and i still can't put it down. it is obviously very similar to GTA but this is not at all a bad thing as it is basically san andreas set in the 1950's and made thousands of times slicker. the shooting system is far more fun and advanced than GTA and the hand to hand fighting system makes GTA's look like it belongs on a game boy. The one place that the godfather does not kick ass is in the driving system that is rather unwieldly and the fact that you can not employ gang members to fight along side you is another let down.

In conclusion BUY THIS GAME it will give you at least a good 2 solid weeks of brilliant play.
