Amazon.co.uk Review The Xbox 360 is Microsoft's successor to the Xbox console, and is the first "next generation" games console to hit the market. It has three powerful core processors which pump out 720p/1080i output (translation: graphics look great), 16x9 cinematic aspect ratio (translation: it's sort of like the cinema), anti-aliasing for smooth textures (translation: characters look less like chimps and more like people), full surround sound and DVD playback right out of the box. A multi media experience | | Xbox 360, shown with levitating wireless controller | In comparison to the Darth Vader inspired design of the original Xbox, the Xbox 360 a thing of (near) wondrous beauty. In addition to playing games and movies, the Xbox 360 can stream music and video from a wide variety of electronic devices, including iPods and the Sony PSP. Get Live The Xbox 360 offers an online gaming experience via Xbox Live. This allows you to play multi-player Xbox 360 games on the internet via your broadband connection. The service also lets you download--and save on the console's hard drive--new missions, characters and vehicles for your favourite games. You can also shout real-time abuse at your opponents using the Xbox 360 headset Choose the package that's right for you The Xbox 360 comes in two different packages: the deluxe package includes a wireless controller, 20GB hard drive, and a number of other accessories. Alternatively, the Core System bundle has a standard wired controller and no hard drive. Which option is right for you will depend largely on your gaming needs--are you a fan of downloadable content? Do controller wires upset the feng shui of your living room? There are pros and cons for each option: for instance, if you do plump for the Core System you will have to buy a separate memory unit if you want to save your games. Likewise, if you opt for the deluxe version you will need a steady supply of AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack to power the wireless controller. The Xbox 360 is only backwards compatible with a limited number of original Xbox titles, and a hard drive is required for this function.

Microsoft... you offend me! January 25, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
How do they dare sell this?! I spent a ludicrous amount of money on this piece of junk! Microsoft claim that this is value for money! NO! simply no! Quite why a core pack comes with a wired controller is beyond me! especially when the wire twists and tears after no time! They couldn't even throw in a memory card! I had to fork out an extra 20quid for 64mb of memory! 64!! That is ridiculously small! If all of this isn't bad enough after the warranty had run out it started to show me the red 'light of death', I contacted Microsoft who said they'd collect it... well they didn't! I waited in vain for a couple of months during which time another problem arose.. Scratched discs.. Now this would be bad enough if it were only the one game... Oh no... 5 games were destroyed! 5!!!! At 40 odd quid each! 50 in some cases! You do the maths! Microsoft wont even give me new copies or refunds! They even had the cheek to ask if id moved the console at all whilst it was switched on! What kind of console has a chainsaw built in that hacks to pieces your discs when you touch it!? Soon problem number 3 arose... the piece of **** wouldn't turn on at all and still won't! Ive given up trying to get it fixed as Microsoft have messed me about enough.. It will forever sit next to my Wii and PS3 (both very reliable and enjoyable consoles) as a reminder to me never EVER to buy anything Xbox again! Now even if i hadn't had any of these HUGE problems the fact that it heats up to exceed the temperature of a blast furnace within 20 minutes of game play would be enough to put me off for life! Quite how the fan makes so much noise is also beyond me! It is utterly ineffective! Now back to the core aspect of it... for 200quid I got the console and wires and a crappy controller. I got my PS3 for 100quid more but what I got for that extra 100 pounds is brilliant! A wireless controller, FREE internet, 2 Games, 40gb hard drive etc etc. And I am NOT a Sony 'fan boy' by any means, I couldn't stand the PS2. I am simply stating the truth.. The PS3 is a considerably better console and is well worth the extra money (is it really extra money if I got 2 games worth 50quid each in the bundle???). Also the PS3 doesn't have that annoying dashboard menu thing that tells you to sign in whenever you turn it on! I JUST WANT TO PLAY GAMES! LET ME PLAY GAMES! I DON'T WANT TO SIGN IN! DO NOT buy this console! I know several people with them and all have had problems... unacceptable problems at that. This is a rip off and a joke! Buy at your risk only!
Basic, cheap, but functional! November 27, 2007 The core system is exactly what it is, a core system, enough to get you going, you have to bear in mind that the hardware is very expensive stuff, and they have to fight against sony and the ever plucky nintendo, if you just want to play games, it will do! Admittedly, they could throw in a memory card, the 64mb one are not much good if you intend to play forza 2, 256mb should cover you nicely
Sadly...best avoided November 5, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
when the xbox 360 works it is awesome, the choice of games is excellent, however.....a word of warning regarding that they run hot and eventually die. I was very happy with my launch console, until it got the 3 red rings. The customer support and repair service is shockingly bad. I sent mine for repair, got it back and it worked for one day. Now having to wait at least another 3 weeks for it to be fixed.
Very basic starter pack September 17, 2007 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying how amazing the games and the graphics look on this console. On my HD tv the picture is amazing...now why I give 2 stars.
Microsoft don't want you to have much fun with the core system. The only reason I bought the basic package was because I'm not a big gamer but I did want to see what all the fuss was about.
When you open the box it all seems very impressive. I connected my Xbox to the TV and put in a game. First I was told I cannot save any games as I need to purchase a memory card or hard drive. This is really bad, Microsoft make a console with all the latest wizzardry but can't even stick in some basic memory.
Next I wanted to connect to my HDTV but again no lead, so I have to buy one otherwise whats the point in having a TV with HD. Next I decided to connect to the internet to try out the Xbox Live system. Surprise Surprise I couldn't view any videos or download any demos because I need a Hard drive plus I need to buy points or something. Lastly if you want to play old xbox games then you will be disappointed unless you fork out for the hard drive.
To sum up I think the core system is totally useless, you may aswell go for the next package up because with all the extras you NEED to buy to have any fun you might as well pay the extra.
Microsoft are not daft, 179 is a good price but add on the first game, HDtv lead, memory card, internet lead and Hard drive and you're almost at the 300 mark.
I was blind...if I'd have known I would have given it a miss and waited for the Xbox 360 sale next year.
fun and disappointment September 2, 2007 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Well the xbox 360 core and premium are awesome machines and for a time they do work well. But when you have 3 flashing lights - hardware failure it is disappointing.Microsoft do have a warranty for these items but twenty days to wait for repair is a long time. The x box is great when it works but very temperamental and prone to problems. But on saying all that my goal is to buy the elite x box 360.
