Amazon.co.uk Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings.
Old timer Snake returns for what is slated as the final installment in the Metal Gear series. View larger. |
New and old characters abound in MGS4. View larger. |
PMCs have run amok and the world is at war. View larger. |
Octacamo will help Snake blend into surroundings. View larger. | Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone. MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. The concept behind the latest Metal Gear Solid project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous MGS franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy bits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the MSX2 Metal Gear series, and three entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. Add to this Portable Ops, and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in Metal Gear Solid 4." Kojima was very clear about the finality of MSG4, leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final instalment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumoured that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance. In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camouflage," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that MGS4 will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumour has it that MGS4 is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.

An awesome acheivement... July 4, 2008 Where do I begin reviewing a game that simply smashes all expectations and rewards you with a truly brilliant experience? I recall playing Metal Gear Solid all those years ago on my Playstation 1. Being a school boy at the time, it became the sole reason to skip on homework and only leave my room for meals. This game sparked my devotion to the MGS series and I have been hooked ever since. Once completing the games I can only describe my emotions as `wow...what a ride.' And I never thought it could possibly get any better than MG3 Snake Eater. Until now...
Like other reviewers, it is difficult to go into detail about MGS4 without spoiling some aspect of the game. Firstly, the visuals are simply stunning. You will never see anything so visually beautiful. They refer to Hideo Kojima as `the Steven Spielberg' of games, a reputation that has definitely been exceeded and lived up to. The game is like one big movie, a movie that you, as the gamer are directly involved in shaping as you play through it.
Every bit of this game really does ooze quality. The negative reviews are born from people who have played MGS here and there, not really appreciating its full story and ending to this truly epic masterpiece. Hideo, we salute you.
No Place for Hideo July 3, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Note: This Review may contain Minor Plot Spoilers.
For the first time since 2001, Kojima has released a canonical sequel to the contraversial Metal Gear Solid 2. Following years of contunity that dates back to Solid Snake's original mission on the MSX console in the Japan-Only Metal Gear released in 1987, the following is what seemingly his is last mission.
Picking up directly after the Big Shell incident (Metal Gear Solid 2), the government has invented the SOP (Sons of the Patriots) system, to create super soldiers, improve techinque and supress emotions to turn them into ultimate lifeless killing machines.. this is where the cast of characters comes in.
Liquid Ocelot (Revolver Ocelot with Liquid Snake's personality and traits) plans on hijacking SOP and use the world at his control, obviously, someone has to do something about this, who will this person be? Solid Snake.
Due to the process that Solid Snake was created in (he is a clone of Big Boss/Naked Snake), his cells age with Big Boss', meaning despite is real age of 44, he is nearly late 60's/early 70's. The returning cast of characters is nearly spanning the entire series, with the return of Raiden outfitted to look like Grey Fox, Naomi Hunter, Hal "Otacon" Emmerich, Vamp, Mei Ling, Meryl, Rosemary, Roy Campbell and some more that players will surely be familar will be familar with.
Solid Snake (now codenamed Old Snake) begins his mission outfitted like a member of the Malitia (which is a rebel army fighting the PMCs), soon we get too see the Solid Snake we all remember though, outfitted in the new OctaCamo suit, which is slightly like the camoflauge system from Metal Gear Solid 3, it works in pressing against an object will give the camo suit that texture and pattern, it's very effective and a great way to add extra features to the long-running series.
Locations around the game and codec sequences, characters etc. are all going to give gamers memories of eariler titles, such as a return to Shadow Moses island, a boss being a fistfight (the third time in the entire series, first off with Grey Fox (MG2SS) and then Liquid Snake (MGS)), and the return of a legendary icon.
For the first time in the series, players are given the chance to actually pilot a Metal Gear, players will take control of Metal Gear REX and engage in a boss battle with Metal Gear RAY with Liquid controlling it.
The Boss Battles are back, Players will use Snake to take on the new Beauty & Beast Corps, Vamp, a bunch of Suicidal Gekkos with Fortunes Rail Gun, Metal Gear, and finally Liquid Ocelot ending one of the most cinematic expriences in a video game ever.
A new feature that hasnt been seen before is the inclusion of Drebin Points, they can be used to launder ID guns picked up off the battlefield, and buy new guns. In a game that is so packed with Espionage rather than straight-up killing, Metal Gear Solid 4 packs an impressive selection of guns that is probably bigger than most first person shooters. Snakes gun of choice this time? An M4A1 customized to how you want it (slightly like the Call of Duty 4 Weapon Customization system), and an handgun named "Operator", the M9 is back filled with tranquilizer, and other weapons are availble at your disposal, Shotguns, SMGs, multiple handguns, missile launchers, the Rail Gun, a matchlock musket, the Patriot from MGS3, the SOCOM from MGS1 (apparently), and "The End's" sniper from MGS3. DP will buy all these for you and add alot of replay value.
The last thing? The cutscenes. Yes, one IS 90 minutes! The best advice? Get comfy, they are fantastic. If you skip them, you will miss out and not get the full experience. The installation is 8 minutes in length too, but this isnt really that long.
I am correct. July 3, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This game extremely fun =] Everyone would enjoy playing this, definitely replayable. How ever for hardcore fans such as me you feel disappointed as it doesn't beat MGS3 (That was the best game ever) and live up to all the hype.
Still you must buy it, and complete it, and you will be left wanting to play the otehrs for the story.
Gameplay, etc... is perfect
Online play = you need a good internet, mine is laggy =[
GET IT !
Cutscenes, it goes either way with us. July 2, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
