I was really looking forward to this game and in many ways it was just as I had hoped - it was fun, had all the real players and the presentation was pretty good. But in the end it was just a little bit flat - maybe darts is too difficult to really recreate in a game.
A good game but room for improvement. February 15, 2007 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
At last a darts game for the PS2. At first, I feared it might be like on-line games where you have to hit the right point on a fast moving guage before releasing the dart. Happily, it's much better than that. An easily positioned target appears on the board and you have too apply the right amount of power to your shot. You do this by pulling back on one of the levers and pushing forward again. Too much power and you throw above the target, too little and you fall short.
There are two modes. In practice mode, where you can play as any of the 10 famous players, there is a power metre with a 'sweet spot' telling you when to release. In this mode, I was able to beat Phil Taylor at the first time of asking. When you decide that this is too easy, you can enter tournament mode where there is no power metre to assist you. You have to judge how far to pull back the arm before releasing the dart.
There are a number of flaws with this game. When you enter tournament mode, you have no choice of character. You have a pot belly and a beard and can only change his outfit. Annoyingly, Sid Waddell has a very limited repertoir with his lines being repeated about every 15 minutes. This is annoying when matches can take up to 2 hours to play. His comments are even more random than in real life and you can be criticised for hitting the shot you were aiming for or praised for a poor score. I now play with my own choice of music in the background. Also, your world ranking score seems to rise by the same amount despite your performance. I got 15 ranking points for reaching the 3rd round of the World Championship and got the same 15 points despite a nightmare first round defeat in the next competition.
There are other little glitches like sometimes forgetting whose turn it is to throw first or the scorer telling you that you require 173 or some other bogey score.
In summary, it is fun and as I only paid 18 for it, I've had value for money and will play it for a good while yet. However, I'm only a casual gamer, and the more committed gamer may find it a little too easy to play and tire of its faults. Hopefully, there will be an improved version soon.
