1 star Hotel October 26, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I know this isn't a platform game like Mario, but this game is boring as dish water. I persisted, oh I persisted, but it is so slow.
Hotl Dusk is full of mystery! October 21, 2008 This was the first game i wanted for the ds- even though i didn't have one! I finally managed to get it and am pleased i did!
First thing- if you don't like lots of reading, avoid! At first, i was bored with the game and wondered why i bought it as it was slow, but when i started finding out the secrets, i wanted to know more. Several times i found myself making a cup of tea and thinking about the game, as if i was watching or reading a detective drama. I loved how the ds is used and see why they chose to release the title on the ds- can you imagine trying to do this game on a psp (i have nothing against psp before anyone says anything!)? It cleverly uses the ds features in different ways, and some of the clues you really have to look out for. The graphics were outstanding and more than i expected on my ds. I also loved the sound track, and it was great fun when trying the tunes out on the juxebox later in the game! The characters were really interesting and i even felt sorry for a few of them, as well as being angry at some. They are realistic as i was thinking about them as real people as the game progressed. I'm also pleased to see that there was a save feature, otherwise i would not have had a break from my ds!
Like any game it has some downsides (hence the four stars). Apart from the reading, some of the clues were really hard to find and admit i had to have some help. I can understand why it has the 12+ rating, as many under that age would either not get the story, find it too hard, or both. The other little complaint is the ending- i wanted to know about some things (won't say what as it'll spoil it!) but they never got answered. Is it because they want people to draw their own conclusions or could there be a second game? I hoe there is another game like this coming soon.
When it did finish, i felt sad. I found myself missing the hotel and all the mysteries. However, from what i have heard, if it is played a second time, some of the puzzles change, so i'll probably give it another go in a few months, without help this time though!
Overall, it is a fantastic game and shows what the ds can do. With graphics, music and a story line like this, it really puts the ds in line with other game consoles. It made me see the DS in a new light and made me love it even more, but my only problem now is to find another Hotel Dusk. For those who are still unsure, try out Cing's other game, Another code (i have written a review for this) or Trace memory if looking at the American version (it is the same game as many people think it's a different game). It is excatly like hotel dusk in game play and will give you an idea of what to expect. I'm looking forward to Cin'g next game in this genre and hope, like many, that it isn't too long before they bring out another like this.
Atmospheric mystery... September 26, 2008 I wasn't sure what to expect from this but as I like mysteries on TV I thought I'd give it a go. I certainly wasn't disappointed. Whilst the gameplay is slow, it is also involving and I found myself playing for long periods and not wanting to finish until I got to the end of the chapter. Even then the temptation to play on was ever present.
I enjoyed this very much and it felt like living through a detective movie or TV episode. The only drawback is, however, that once played you may not ever play again. This is because the gameplay is very linear and replay not really catered for in the storyline.
However, if you like mysteries and see youself as a budding Private Detective then this is the game for you! Buy it and enjoy - I did!
Darker RPG for mature player August 30, 2008 I thoroughly enjoyed this title. If you're an RPG fan, I would certainly recommend it. I got this game to fill my lunch hour at work, finding other DS games too twee and dim for my tastes. Though this is a point-and-click format, I thought the puzzles, riddles and sleuthing to be really engaging. The characterisations are great, the art and mature manga style are very appealing, and the plot is substantial and interesting. Unlike most RPGs, I did not find myself figuring out the plot twists well in advance. I can say the revelations surprised me on many occasions.
There are some moments where wandering about to trigger an event can annoy, but usually the clue is given during game-play so getting stuck wasn't really an issue. You have a handy in-game note-book to keep track of your next move and the info you've gathered. So if like me you don't play a game for a full week, you can go straight back in and read your own reminders. Plus the game has end of chapter summaries to get you back on track.
You'll really get a feel for all the characters you engage and for the main character. But like many point-and-click RPGs, this is a mystery plot. There is a lot of reading to be done, a lot of interrogating and plenty of thinking involved. Get it wrong and you may find your foot in your mouth, get kicked out and have to start the chapter over. Just save as often as you can between events and you'll have no problem.
This game is mostly about talking to people, grilling them for answers, pasting stories together and interacting with your environment to find clues and solve riddles. If you love character-driven plots then this is definitely for you.
ok !! August 6, 2008 ok game far too much reading of conversations which became quite irritating at times. enjoyable looking around he hotel finding clues and people to talk to, i wish there had been more clue finding rather than talking to people to piece the story together. i played it over a space of 2 wks and completed it, and was glad to tbh!! couldnt play it again wouldnt want to face another game where there is this amount of reading....i felt like i was reading a book more than playing a game...and fell asleep playing it at times.the graphis are in black and white just like the picture on front of box and not much other colour througout which became quite boring too. because there was so much reading of conversations it ave it away too much as to what to do next u didnt have to think much!!
