Diddy Kong Racing = Definitely Not A Mario Kart Rip-Off October 23, 2008 For anyone who has played Mario Kart 64 and not Diddy Kong Racing 64, the two games are very different. Sure, you race in karts and use powerups; but although I love Mario and thoroughly enjoyed playing Mario Kart as a child, Diddy Kong has so much more substance. The gameplay is a lot more detailed and challenging, whereas Mario Kart is very easy and you easily become bored with the single player mode. DK racing is, in essence, a racing game combined with a platformer, and is so much more fun playing as a single player because of this. The graphics of this game are typical of the N64: simple but colourful and pleasing to the eye. The sound, again, is very N64: cute but repetitve, and the music can become slightly annoying if you are struggling to complete a challenge. Overall, anyone who likes the old-school style of games such as Mario, Banjo-Kazooie etc. should definitely get this game if you haven't already. It is not an N64 classic, but it is close.
Mario Kart is so much better ! December 6, 2007 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
This game is very boring, i bought the game and took it back to the shop the next week. Mario Kart is such a better game, which i do recommend to anyone.
A bit too easy September 3, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
My missus bought this game a couple of weeks ago as she fancied a cartoony racing game. She wasn't particularly impressed with it.
I've had a play with it too and if I had played the original on the N64 then I might have pangs of nostalgia which added warmth for the game - but I didn't and was left a little cold by it.
My main gripe with it is that it is too easy. The first time I picked it up I did a quick race, managed to take the lead after a few seconds and got stuck at the side of a tunnel/bridge. I reversed a few times and got myself back on the track - still in 1st! There was no challenge. I got a few boosts and used them to extend my lead. I'm not even that great on racing games usually (I thought I was good on Mario Kart until my mate Marc whipped me into the ground on it!).
There are some good aspects - you can choose to race by road, water, or air - and the little planes are very cute! The power-ups are a bit different to those on other games - and if you collect several of the same colour you can increase the power of your power-up.
But - I felt that I was getting into 1st and not really facing any competition. There's no challenge, it was always going to be tough creating a driving game for a platform where Mario Kart exists (it is absolutely brilliant), and with there being no 'thrill of the chase' in this game, you lose any real passion for it after a few goes.
Does exactly what it says on the tin! July 28, 2007 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Like the other reviewer, I brought this game and feel that it does need defending. First off I love these kind of games...blowing up opposition and getting speed powerups to whizz past your opposition... As far as the game goes, yes it is great, the DS have captured it well with the driving in the top window and the map in the bottom. Ingenious idea for the starting grid...depending on which veichle you have will depend on what you can do. The car is just a simple up and down spin your tyres, The hovercraft is a circular aciton on the touch screen and the plane, get this....blowing onto the touch screen!! The only slight snag I have with the game is the lack of weapons, there is only the missile and the oil slick, but with the upgrading of these if you collect more of the same powerful does make it worthwhile. All in all a good solid game...my first one of the DS!
Time to set the record straight! April 27, 2007 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
After seeing an advert for the game i knew i had to buy it as i loved it back in the day of Nintendo 64! I was left a little unsure by the previous two reviews but went for it anyway and now feel i should defend it a little! Admittedly it has been made slightly easier than the original and the voices have been changed (including the genie who now sounds a little camp) but it still is good fun and brings back memories! Racing is definately better on mario kart ds but with adventure mode this is a very different game! Recommended for owners of the N64 game...
