 better than COD4...but not perfect August 29, 2008
If cod 4 is a light infantry skirmish then bad company is a war. The single player is there for you to get to grips with the controls. Whilst the 1 player is ok the enemy a.i. are too good and there is a funny aspect like in bioshock where when you die you get respawn but the enemies you've killed previously stay dead. But none of that matters because its the online war that proves so fantastic that other little niggles are easilly ignored. 90% of the battlefield is destructable with tanks, mortars, guns,helicopters, grenades, noob tubes, RPG's, exploisives etc. Buildings and scenary fall under the destructive power of your arsenal. all the maps are amazing...with a mix of sniping, mid range mayhem and close range action (insert shot gun blast here). You choose your class of soilder from demolition, support, assault, sniper and speacialist and as you rank up you unlock more weopons and gadgets. This works very well as all weopons even the new ones you gain are well balanced. Theres no being shot in the face a la cod4 by a twit yet again with a RCP90 which just spews out ammo...this is well balanced carnage. It shows the brutality of war. Noobs will die...and die alot. There are issues with what a tank can roll over and what it can't, sometimes you respawn with your squad just to get smoked instantly. Also unlike cod4 the teamwork on battlefield can at times be non existant with most at times not talking over the headphones prefering a rambo esqe method. Theses are small niggles. What bad company does it does well and when your squad does start to bark orders to each other its fantastic. This is war and with the new free download over live which is like capture the flag the only way that cod4 can answer is by supplying some fantastic maps. Cod4 feels old compared to this. First off, i love Battlefield games, ever since 1942, i loved them. And ever since i heard of this game, i knew it wasnt going to be a let down, and it wasnt. The graphics are brilliant, and the gameplay is incredible, with massive maps for you to explore, it is far better than COD4.
The destructible enviroments are a great touch to the game, allowing you to play how you want to play. If you want to attack the guys in the buliding by storming it and going in guns blazing, you can. If you want to however attack them by blowing a hole in the wall right infront of them and fire off a quick few shots, you can.
The mulitplayer is awesome, the unlock system for weapons is very good online. I played my first match and loved every second. It is a pity that one of the best weapons you can get you can only get by pre-ordering the game, a bit unfortunate for those who are still buying the game now.
The story is imaginative, 4 rogue army dudes, looking for a mercs gold, it's all good. There are around 6 or 7 missions which sometimes get quite long and on the hard difficuilty can take a very long time.
Now for the cons. I cnat think of many apart from 2. One is that your enemies must have incredibly good eyesight or they are incredibly tense, they see you if you are crouching in undergrowth, and you think your totally invisible. It can get quite annoying sometimes. The second mostly happens on the hard difficuilty. When i play, i die a few times (doesnt everyone ?) so when you die and you respawn you are back a few clicks away from where you were, 100% health, with the enemies you had already killed still dead. I dont know whever it's just me, but i feel that it sometimes it just takes the skill out of the game. A 4 year old could complete the story on hard eventually.
Overall it is a brilliant game, full with little extras like you have to find cold crates scattered all across all the maps in single player, and collect all the weapons in the single player mode too. This game is one of the best games i have ever played and it is definately a game i will keep playing :D

I got Bad Company having never played a battlefield game before, and not really knowing what to expect. However after playing a few hours I was having the most fun I have ever had online, and with an ok single player, I think this game is really worth the money.
First things first, this game is really for it's online mode and I wouldn't buy it for the single player. In the single player you play as a new recruit into bad company, a small millitary squad thrown into dangerous situations. The single player is definetly playable and the 90% destructible enviroments really add to the overall experience. Another nice touch is you really get to know your team, who provide humorous (if not sometimes unnecessary) comments. However in comparison with COD4 this title really doesn't stand as a single player. It's too easy (due to the respawn system), too short and lacks the style and atmosphere to be a rival to the daddy of modern FPS's. An enjoyable and nice addition, but not worth buying the game for.
The area where this game shines is online, and it has provided me with hours of mindless fun. There are now two modes, Gold Rush and the newly added Conquest mode. Each provide a rewarding gaming experience, however my favourite is conquest as it firmly pits team against team with the same objective. An important factor in this game is vehicles, which provides the game with more depth than COD4 online. There are jeeps, tanks, boats and helicopters to be taken advantage off, and all add something to the gameplay. However they are also nicely balanced out, jeeps are vunerable to general fire, tanks won't last against artillary strikes or a hit from an anti-tank missle, boats don't stand a chance against helicopters and helicopters can't fight the anti-air guns. It's just so fun to be running around and see a battle taking place at sea and in the air simultaneously. The destructible enviroments also really add something to the experience, it demands that you think differently about the way you take cover and when you run a tank through the side of a building, it really feels like you're in a tank. As you improve you move up the ranks, unlocking items and better guns. It's pretty easy to move up, and perhaps isn't as deep a ranking system as COD4, but it's still a nice touch. I've never had a problem getting into a game, nor have I suffered with any lag. The only negative thing I can think off is there seems to be very little talk between you and your teammates. Personally I can't think of anything worse than the game being ruined by over enthusiastic loud mouths who deem it necessary to report there every action in the game, but if you love chat, you won't find much here.
I can't recommend this game enough for the online experience, and the single player is a nice bonus. This game wants you to blow things up, and have fun whilst doing it. I'm happy to oblige.
 controller problems August 8, 2008
Been playing the game for a week now, really enjoyed the demo on the x box 360. Thought i would buy it on the ps3 quiter console and all that(my 360 sounds like an airplane taking off:)) should have bought it on the 360.........bloody ps3 controller is a nightmare the fire buttons are upside down in the heat of battle keep pressing the wrong buttons in vehicles for example keep going back instead of forwards, and there are no configurable control options very poor, they should scrap the dual shock awful aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

First up, I like the humour - there just isn't enough (especially when you're out there killing things, eh, and that'll be people). Great humour.
Bad points first, though. I got a crap copy of this from Amazon (it was loose in the box and the XBox seal had been broken, even though the box was wrapped in plastic. Amazon were very good about it, and had no haggle about refunding my money. The main reason I returned it, though, wasn't because it'd been opened, as long as it worked I'd have been very happy to keep it. But, it didn't work properly. I tried it over the weekend and during a cut scene, even when changing camera/look view (nothing else to do) the screen locked up on me and the sound disappeared. Restart 1. Played on for a couple of hours; same thing.
On about Restart 4, guess what, I got Three Rings of Death, and I was starting to think that maybe it wasn't the game after all. Somewhat disappointed, I turned everything off and, giving the machine a couple of minutes to cool off, turned it back on again; having had one machine die on me (and had a replacement from Microsoft) I was quite expecting the same thing. Not a bit of it. It started as usual, but you can bet my heart was in my mouth for a while.
Anyway, after another four or so restarts (but fortunately no more red lights), I'd pretty well determined to send the thing back, then I got the worst of system lock-ups, just when the screen had prompted me of a save in progress. Restart, say, 9 to be charitable.
This time when I turned my Xbox (an Elite, by the way) back on, I saw straight away that all my game profile and save data had disappeared. Gave me a really good feeling, you can bet. The game worked, sort of, after that, but I wasn't comfortable. Anyway, I went into town and bought a new version (having opted for a refund from Amazon). Guess what, it plays much better, but I've still had one system lock-up for no apparent reason. This time it happened when I was trying to sneak up on some of those pesky Russians, and I was creeping through a treeline close to an out of bounds area (word from the wise; you get 5 seconds in the dead/red zone before you die). So, in total, I've had two copies of this game from two different vendors (in two different countries, by the way) and had a similar problem with both. That said, the second version is proving to be (relatively) much more stable than the first.
That's the negatives. The game itself is a lot of fun, and the banter between you and your pals from the AI is a hoot. The game itself is pretty well free-roaming, and you can, in a lot of places, backtrack, so if you didn't have all the time in the world (because you were trying to stay alive) once you've cleared the obstacle you're facing, well you can go back and have a sniff about.
Vehicles are fun (I mean, how cool is it to play chicken with a tank on a golf course - driving a golf buggy; with four soldiers on board. The thing really whizzes about, but it's not Forza. Driving the vehicles is OK, but not exactly simple, then you have to remember that it's a sort of secondary function. Good thing, which is realistic, is that there are a bundle of vehicles you can drive and, well, if you've wasted one tank you can (after a nice long walk) go and get another one, if you can remember where you saw an empty one parked.
Ammunition is aplenty, and there are some natty devices that come your way. I particularly enjoyed using the mortar spotter (somewhat easier to use than the close air support "goggles" which does a similar thing - except that you have to guide the missile onto the target. Fine if you're not being shot at. There's a bucket of different types of ammo and frankly you're never likely to be short of something to shoot with. If you like "sneak up and head shot" type of warcraft, then there is a whole selection of sniper-type weaponry. Of course, there's everything from a pistol to a bazooka. Logically, too, you can't carry too much, which makes you sit down and think about what you're going to do with what you've got - and keeps you keen to watch out for what's available on the way.
The aforementioned sniped enemy will go down straight away, but even though you're firing with an almost silent weapon, his demise will be spotted straight away, so you need to plan accordingly because you will get a reaction.
The pace is just about right, but what made it for me, apart from the realistic scenery that you sometimes get caught just looking at, is the fact that the game is played during the day, so bad light isn't an eternal battle. That and the ever-present humour. For that alone, I'd recommend this. Blood and gore, like Viking or Assassin's Creed it's not; it just a great fun romp. Even though I did sometimes have difficultly in getting out and finding my bearings after a whole wood had been shot down around me. Still, you can do that and more - I spent a pleasant half an hour on one level, a good mile away from any stray action and laid a whole town to waste with the mortar plotter. OK, like that it wasn't an FPS, but as an exercise in what you can do it was an experience.
I'd recommend this game, it's a lot of fun, not exactly taxing, and, well, there are gold bars to find, if you look hard enough.
