avoid wasting money on this product October 3, 2008 Avoid this game AT ALL COSTS until you read favourable posts on the net about the patch status. It is clearly unfinished and not tested by the Koch people. Why should we game players have to sponsor game companies to write patches and conduct basic product testing. Very grumpy after wasting many hours with this.
Gorgeous, atmospheric, creepy... October 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
... and buggy as hell. I've had the misfortune of having played through the first level of the swamp only to have to patch the game and be forced to restart twice now as the save games weren't compatible. On the plus side this has meant I've experienced the incredible varying weather mixed with the superb day/night cycle (lightning storm at night was simply marvvellous). However, the game is now patched to version 1.5.04 (with patch 1.2) and is still majorly flawed. The bugs? I have a upgraded rifle in 100% perfect condition that can't shoot as accurately as my pistol; shotguns that seem next to useless; the 'bleeding' indicator constantly showing; but most frustrating are frequent glitches in missions/plot that require multiple attempts at reloading old save games to progress forward. I will say that it looks so much nicer than the original STALKER and on my modest 8800GTS E6600 Dual Core rig I have managed to get the settings up and preserve my framerates (experiment with the enhanced lighting but with the advanced settings pulled down a bit) I'll revisit the game once I've played Crisis Warhead (so far so good), FarCry 2, Fallout 3, Dead Space and a few oldies that I missed and really hope that I can change my score of 2 when I come back to this one.
Update: 1.5.05 patch has been released which appears to address some issues that might have been causing me problems - I've applied but I still won't be playing it for a while yet
Steer clear at all costs. September 28, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I dont usually write reviews. But after trying to play this abortion I thought I would warn others. SOC was great, after the barrage of patches. Clearsky is even worse, and completely unplayable. The publisher should be ashamed letting this loose. I feel like they have walked off with my money laughing their heads off as they ride into the distance to produce more rubbish.
1.5.04 patch solves some of the criminal errors, but everytime they release a patch, well heres the best part, your saves are defunct, so you will have to start again! Master stroke. After starting for the 3rd time, I have now found a bug where some areas play at 1 FPS, and others full speed. painful.......disk makes a nice coffee mug though!
dont bother September 27, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this game thinking it would be as good as the first. The graphics are good and the gameplay is excellent, but the game is just too unstable. Even after I installed the newest patch it was still unstable, in fact was more unstable than before. The game constantly crashes to desktop which has ruined the game for me. If I had known about the issues before buying the game then I think I would have avoided it. Until the bugs are fixed dont waste your money!
I think it's called a Curate's Egg..... September 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There's a lot to like in this for fans of the original like me, however there are some flaws, first up, I have no idea what sort of machine it takes to run this full out, I have a core 2 quad, 8800 GTS and 4 gig of ram and it doesn't get anywhere near it, in fact in all honesty it's pretty much unplayable with the settings set to look any better than the original STALKER.
Other issues, well the spotting capabilities of the NPC's verge on the ridiculous, you cannot sneak past anyone, indeed they can spot you 100 yards away..... in the dead of night..... behind a tree, and not only that shoot the hell out of you while your bullets fly all over the place.
The faction war stuff is a good idea but it patently does not work, sometimes you can walk around a faction camp completely unmolested only to have the same faction shoot at you on sight a few hundred yards away.
Artifacts are next to impossible to find, no more bouncing shiny artifacts, you can only find them with a detector which in all honesty you will wonder if working the first few times you pull it out.
The GUI is updated but it doesn't work very well if you're used to the original, where it was perfectly clear if you were bleeding or suffering radiation damage, in this one the geiger counter only makes a sound when it feels like it and bleeding and radiation damage are signified by small lights, when you start out you will die from bleeding out long after you've finished fighting, it's a hugely frustrating "improvement".
The ballistics are, well, patchy, if you get any foliage in the way of a shot it can absorb huge amounts of the force of your shot, for example I've had NPC's survive 3 shotgun blasts to the head at point blank because there were a few leaves in the way.
Money is a lot lot tighter than the first one and at the moment the traders don't appear to work properly, the prices they give you for your stuff is even more insulting than in the first one, but, worse than that the price of items in their inventories bears absolutely no relation to the price you actually have to pay. To top even this there is an unavoidable scripted event on the main mission that will leave you with no cash and no guns which given the difficulty of the game is honestly almost heartbreaking, USE STASHES TO STORE SPARE DECENT GUNS IN.
The voice acting is painful in parts.
The bugs are manifest but if you patch it and play mostly the main mission you won't hit that many problems early on.
All that said, there is honestly a lot to like in here, the world is beautifully realised and the graphics even on the lower settings are more than acceptable, the story is engaging once it gets going and players of the original will recognise the odd bit that affects events in the original. The gripes with the game are mostly balance issues that can be tackled with patches and once the bugs are sorted there is a lot of game to be had here.
3 star at the moment simply because of the bugs, but once those are sorted, this (like it's predecessor) will be one of the most interesting PC shooters around. I'd recommend it to anyone.
