4 out of 5 stars Cool   November 9, 2008
This game was much better than I expected. And I did expect to like it.

I was wary of so many ways to use the force. But the controls are really rather intuitive and accessible.
The story isn't shoddy either. The characterisation and dialogue could be a little better, but the overall story arc fits Star Wars.

You can feel like a behemoth of power when getting stuck in to the mooks. Throwing them around, blasting them with lightning, chopping them up with the lightsabre, choking the life out of them, or tossing objects at them.
Much of the scenery is useable, or at least open to being destroyed.
The fights with the bosses could be a little better, although there are elements to those fights that make them special. Mini-duels as both parties are locked in an exchange trying to gain the upper hand, but it's the last fee seconds of the fight where your determined grimace begins to form into a smug smile. At that point you have to hit the prompted button to continue the scripted event, if you miss it you'll have to fight them a bit more to get them in a position to start that event again, but if you get it right you'll see your character destroy the enemy is a truly evocative fashion.

It has some replay value. You get to start the adventure again, but keep the upgrades you've gained so far.
Even so, there's a lot of additional costumes you can only access by popping in the corresponding cheat code. Would have been nice to have been able to earn them all through play.

All told though, I'm glad I picked this up.

God of War with a light saber! Sounds like a good idea and although this game does have some good points it comes nowhere near to its 2 predecessor. The repetitive hack, slash and force powers formula could be forgiven if the story was actually as good as every one says it was but I found it to be as ludicrous and over complicated as the new Star Wars films. The main character is totally void of personality and is way too flippant. He goes from bad to good in an instant and never really questions his actions.

The controls of the actual character are quite good as is the light saber attacks but it's the use of the force powers which is where it becomes awkward. Targeting certain objects or enemies is flawed and you will often miss what your aiming for which can be frustrating. Also the speed in which you power up your force powers is too slow. You get to the end of the game with only a few powers of which are of any use. The boss battles are ok but don't really catch the atmosphere from the films and seem to be way over the top relying more on force powers than dueling ability.

The graphics are amazing and visiting familiar places from the Star Wars verse like Cloud City and the Death Star is always incentive to continue playing as is visiting new locations like Raxus Prime which is an entire planet made out of junk.(my personal favorite.) But you will also do some levels more than once which gets boring. Do you really have to visit the Jedi Temple 3 times? There are also a few nice touches like choosing light saber color, changing costumes and 2 different endings although only one makes any sense.

Force Unleashed is an above average action game that will appeal more to Star Wars fans than the regular gamer. There's no real incentive to play it more than twice and it's not without its flaws. I really do believe the story and narrative are the biggest problem. Talks of turning this into a film makes me shudder that would be about as welcome as Jar Jar Binks in the Phantom Menace. A bit on the short side and you will get bored but if you have some time to kill and are a Star Wars fan (in other words you don't have a girl friend) give this a whirl.

Having bought this game, I can say that I was very impressed overall, despite that gameplay can get repetitive. I initially wanted to get the PS3 version but yet again I was put off getting the PS3 console due to more horror stories about overheating etc.
But I was pleasantly surprised to see that the PS2 version is a great quality game (I feared that due to the fact that the PS2 is practically dead now, this was going to be half a game, so to speak).
The story itself was fantastic and really felt that I was part of a star wars movie. I was also happy to see some of my favourite star wars characters either in the main game or as unlockable characters later on, like Emperor Palpatine (who I think is MILES better than Darth Vader as a bad guy), Admiral Ackbar (who is unlockable), Mace Windu, Han Solo and many more but I was hoping that an unlockable Plo Koon (who is my favourite character) would be on there, but no luck!
So for those of you, like me, who haven't yet bought a next-gen console due to some of the horror stories, have faith in this title as it does deliver on both great action and an amazing story which fits in very nicely with the saga.
