3 out of 5 stars Not bad   January 10, 2006
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

Day of Reckoning 2 is not a bad game in its own right, but having played it to death in the last couple of weeks it does not compare much to the great N64 game No Mercy. The story mode angles are very good, it is like watching Raw or Smackdown, you don't know what is going to happen next. No voiceovers, but the text used has all the relevant catchphrases etc. There is a varied level of difficulty, some matches were very easy and others very hard. One match against the undertaker took six of my finishing moves on him to get the pin! Also you practically have to win every match in story mode, give or take one or two, which can be very frustrating sometimes. I also do not like how you cannot go through story mode with an existing wrestler; very stupid idea by the makers of this game as it means you can only use the WWE stars in exhibition mode and have to take time at the start to come up with a new wrestler capable of competing.

The entrances are very realistic and have a high level of detail. Having the ring announcer Tony Chimmel is a nice touch and gives the entrances a TV-like feel. I was very impressed with them, and the Create-An-Entrance for your created wrestler is very extensive and you can change everything from pyros to camera angles to taunts.

There are a few annoying flaws of this game that disappoint me. The controls as a whole are quite easy to play, and fans of No Mercy will find it similar for basic grapple and striking moves. But the most frustrating thing for me is that whenever you take a hit, you have to tap A to get back up. The more damage you take, the more you have to tap and the longer you stay down. You have to do the same for pins, submissions and TKOs. Also if you are in a match with more than one opponent, any moves that land on you if you are on the floor will hurt you, and you'll have to tap A more and more. It is very frustrating and poorly done by the makers.

The game is slow loading in general compared to other cube games, and having to wait can be annoying sometimes. Overall a good game, but could have been so much better. The last WWE game I had before this was Wrestlemania X8, and this is a big improvement on that.
However there has still been no successor to WWF No Mercy on the N64, the developers need to go back and look at that, update it for next generation, and build on what made that title so great. Until that happens it looks like they just don't make wrestling games like they used to, which is very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars A great game for WWE fans!   November 12, 2005

For all you crazy WWE fans out there this is an awesome game. Therer is a problem though, it doesn't really appeal to other people, but there's enough WWE fans out there to make money from this! The roster is way better on this game, it actually has JBL this time so i can kick his ass, and it also has some new faces to wrestling games like Christy Hemme, Carlito, Gene Snitsky, Orlando Jordan and Heidenreich. Unfortunately Matt Hardy didn't come back early enough to get on this game, and for some reason it has Kenzo Suzuki who was fired way before this game came out. The same goes for Muhammed Hassan aswell. The graphics are alot more 3-D and shaded in this one and the entrances are top noch. If you're a fan of the PS2 and Xbox games i'll tell you now that this one doesn't have commentry because of the smaller Gamecube discs. That's a let down considering that the background music in this game is absolute crap! But sound isn't all important. It's the gameplay that counts. The moves are just as good in this one and you get to chose if you want to taunt, make them submit, have a rest or drain their energy when you do a submission. The new stamina mode was a bad idea. When you're kicking ass you suddenly find yourself not being able to move because of the stamina loss. You have to be slow and do too many submissions if you want to keep your stamina up. It ruins the fun in the game. Also the match selection could have had a bit more than the last game, last man standing match was the only new one, a bullrope match, i quit match or elimination chamber would ahve been better. It'll last you a while this game, with all the selections you can do in exhibition and the great new story mode, so you can get your moneys worth. In story mode this year you still get to travel around collecting titles and this time you have more of a life because you go out with Stacy Keibler, so there;s an improvement there. So overall it's a decent game but maybe too similar to Day of Reckoning 1. But it's still a good buy for WWE fans, and it was created for WWE fans so i think it should scrape 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars WWE is back!   November 9, 2005

This is a great game for any WWE fanatic like me! The roster is way better than the original game. It actually has JBL this time so you can kick his ass and it has some new faces to WWE games like Carlito, Orlando Jordan, Christy Hemme, Eugene, Heidenreich, Paul London,Gene Snitsky and Muhammed Hassan. Unfortunately Matt Hardy wasn't back in WWE in time to star in this game, and why did they still put Kenzo Suzuki in it when he was fired long before it was released? The Storyline is so much better than the last one because this time your wrestler actually has a life, and he goes out with Stacy Keibler! You also go on both Smackdown and Raw this time. The graphics are great and really capture the excitement in the entrances. The only problem with the gameplay is the stamina mode, your'e kicking ass then suddenly you can't move because your'e out of stamina! Then your opponent beats the hell out of you and you can't get enough momentum back and loose. It was a good idea to start but in reality it failed miserably. With the many exhibition options and the story mode it'll last you quite a while. Did you like the music in the original game? It was good but in this game there's only one decent song. It's a good buy if you like WWE but if you don't you may not be as satisfied.

Graphics - 10
Gameplay - 6
Value - 9
Music - 5
Value - 9
