Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review:

In a nutshell:
Start a new life on your DS with the most unlikely source of online addiction you’ve ever experienced. You’ve complete freedom to customise your home and the town around it as you socialise with the locals and your friends alike.

The lowdown:
The world of Animal Crossing seems a peculiarly simple one at first: there are no levels to be beaten or bad guys to overcome, just a cheerful little village to maintain, as you water flowers, catch fish and dig for fossils. But before you know it the game has its hooks in you, as you meet friends via the Wi-Fi Network Connection to chat and compete or start playing the turnip stock market. With over 600 different pieces of furniture to collect the game has a near infinite lifetime and by running in real-time with special events all through the year you’ll find yourself checking in daily with what’s going on around town.

Most exciting moment:
Winning a fishing competition against three friends and rubbing their noses in it via the online chat.

Since you ask:
The first Animal Crossing game was actually released on the N64 in Japan – the GameCube version was a slightly enhanced version of this.

The bottom line:
Live the life idyllic on your DS with the best use of the Wi-Fi Network Connection yet.
HARRISON DENT

1 out of 5 stars THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE BUYING THIS FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN   November 28, 2008

This is harsh but I'll explain why. 95% of the time this is the harmless sort of game it appears to be, in tune with its PEGI rating of 3+. BUT in certain circumstances (mainly if your child keeps switching off the game without saving it properly first) a fierce-looking mole appears and starts abusing the player for doing so. Abusing? Well, it repeatedly used the word "punk" in what I can only describe as a two or three minute aggressive rant. Why do they think "punk" is an acceptable way to address young children? Other terms were used as well. This may be OK for older children but my 7-year old was literally shaking afterwards, and even my 9-year old was visibly upset. The younger child had a couple of nightmares about it. To make it worse, there's no way to cut short the mole once it has started and if they turn the game off to "make him go away" he comes back even more vituperative when they next start the game. There is no warning about this mole anywhere in the manual, and no alternative but to let him run his course.

Other than this it seems OK as a game, the main problem being the amount of time they'll waste on it, and now that they've learnt (mostly) how to avoid the mole coming my children enjoy playing it. It's better pitched for older children, however (eg my children asked "what does 'dork' mean?" part way through playing it the other day - symptomatic of an expectation of older players by the designers), and I can't help wondering how many other shocks are lying in wait in the game. I therefore CANNOT recommend it for the under-10s at least.

5 out of 5 stars where do I start?   November 26, 2008
I don't know where to begin! Simply, this is a magical little game yet I can fully understand why some people would not appreciate its madness and genius. Its cute, fun, relaxing and easy without you finishing it in the first few days of purchase - infact it can last months. The people who don't like this game are essentially right, as there is nothing of real urgency to do. You just swan around your little town and build a life for yourself by collecting things, selling things and doing odd jobs but the appealing thing about this game is that its not meant to be played on for hours at a time each day. Much like nintendogs and other similar games you only really play on it for about 30 minutes a day just to check up on everything but unlike nintendogs there are no restrictions because if you really want you can just collect fish and bugs and fossils for hours and hours. This game was made for the DS as you can take your town with you every where and the wi fi is, of course genius so its a much more appealing prospect than the animal crossing that was brought out on the gamecube. In my opinion its an essential DS game.

5 out of 5 stars BUY BUY BUY   November 25, 2008
Wroten buy my 13 year old daughter............
omg animal crossing! what can i say! i love this game.
soOoOoOoO fun.................i played this non stop as it is really adicting but then i got tired of it and after about two weeks i played it again and once again it becomes addicting...........the best thing about this game is that you have your own person and house, you can talk to the locals, play with your friend if they have the game, buy things in the shop and fashion shop, fish, collect furniture, go bug hunting and create your own design which the people in your town can wear and your little person.
BUY THIS GAME AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT..............! =}

5 out of 5 stars Great game!   November 23, 2008

This game is definitely a good buy. You decide on who stays and leaves your town and can customise your own room and character. You can send letters using all kinds of paper, design your own clothes, make your own money and the characters are really cute.
There are also lots of buildings, a town hall, museum, two shops, houses and a town gate.
You can make friends and grow plants, make your house into a mansion and listen to a dog play music!
The characters are all different, some kind, some mean such as bodybuilders and ones that only ever eat. If you don't like the characters, when they try to move out you can just let them go.
I would recommend this game to children 6+, as younger children may find it too hard for them.
There are no challenges except for taking presents and letters to others, and you never get penalties for doing something wrong. This also contains no battles, so you don't have to worry about being hurt apart from scorpions and bees.
The only thing about it that isn't ideal is that sometimes the characters leave behind your back.
I have had the game for over two years and still enjoy playing it, you should definitely buy it!

1 out of 5 stars Horrible game. Annoying, bitchy characters... NO THANK YOU!   November 19, 2008

I bought this for my daughter for her birthday because of the great reviews but we both hate it, If you turn off your machine without saving some Mole comes up next time you play and abuses you making you repeat things like "i'm dumb" and has you going through pages and pages of text telling you off. When we moved into our first town there were neighbours there who were bitchy and cocky. We've only been playing it for a short while but we found nothing appealing about this game at all and would not recommend it to anyone. I also had a problem with the sound it's so low I couldn't hear the fish bite unless I had total silence in the room.
