STEAM ENDS USED MARKET September 9, 2010 D. J. Betts (Bilston, England) I purchased this game on Amazon used. However because of steam I cannot register the cd as the code can only be used by the original owner. Steam told me I should ask for a refund by the seller which I have done and await their answer. Be warned you CANNOT USE second hand copies of this game because of Steam nor should you try to sell them. In effect steam retains ownership even though you bought it. What an absolute rip off.
The best Total War so far? August 30, 2010 A. King (UK) I consider creative assembly's Rome: Total War to be my favourite game of all time - the atmosphere, music and gameplay appeal perfectly to my idea of the ancient world.
Medieval 2 and Empire both failed me. Unable to give me the same sensation of wonder and lust for the past, they were both sidelined with about 5 hours of gameplay each...
I bought Napoleon from amazon a few weeks ago (the day after, the imperial edition was cheaper :@) and so far i've clocked in about 40 hours playing the game. It has turned my attention to the carnage that was 17th/18th century history and warfare, with campaigns which engage the player in so many ways. Keeping on top of your growing empire can be a pain but completing goals is rewarding (though somewhat scripted). The AI is decent and the developers have addressed issues present in previous games - namely Empire - such as speeding up reload time for units, making for a more fluid (less boring) experience. This is only one among a heap of changes and additions which make this a 5 star game.
Online play is awesome, though the player rating system is a bit weird it is easy enough to find an opponent with roughly the same skill as yourself.
Overall, a visually stunning representation of warfare and social and economic growth in the 17th and 18th centuries, a time where europe was being moulded by conflict at the hands of that little french guy. Granted, you may cringe at the thought of having to side with a bunch of frenchmen, but it's only [...]. Cheers now.
P.S. Steam is alright. I have a maximum download speed of 60kb/s... Patience is a virtue.
Great for the ones that love history August 30, 2010 rgrassineto It has been a fantastic experience. You can not only watch the Battles of the Napoleonic Era, but also interact, by creating a virtual and parallel Present, in which Napoleon can be the winner.
I would recommend the good service from Amazon and the seller but not the Total War AI August 28, 2010 robbo1978 This review is not so much about the game because i tend to know what sort of games i enjoy and thus purchase. The game arrived in perfect condition and ive had no problems. The postage seems a bit steep for second class but the game was good value and ordering on line and getting delivered was easiest for me. So overall no complaints about the service.
A few comments i would make about the actual game is that the AI is poor and stupid and not challenging! Great era (Napoleon) and i look forward to American civil war era if only the AI is sorted. But i would definetly purchase games this way again because the AI for the TW franchise is an ongoing problem and nothing to do with Amazon or the seller.
The Usual , what it offers doesnt work August 28, 2010 Sunshine1. (U.K) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is another Total War effort that doesn't work.
Its crashes frequently, possibly due to a horrible parasite called steam.
Graphics are lovely but it simply doesnt work, not just in terms of stability, but as an example - i have not so far been able to get any of my units that have the capacity to form squares to do so. Nor could the units that are meant be able to skirmish actually skirmish, granted cavalry would turn round but didnt actual move away.
I couldnt describe the terrible path finding problems , cavalry stuck against ridges, the usual nonsense. Medieval 1 was far the best.
My advice - i was tempted by the reviews that said it was a big step on from empires. i never got empires but now im thinking, if this is a big step up in gameplay then... ???.
AI is dreadful what ever setting its on - as expected.
