Surprisingly good December 5, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Despite all the talk of DRM, crashing and framerate issues, the game runs surprisingly well on my PC - a core duo 2.4ghz, 2 gig RAM, nvidia 8800gts video card. As long as updates are in place and the drivers are also up to date I don't see any problem in running this game, although I wouldn't try it on a lower spec PC. Try not to have anything else running in the background either. Rockstar obviously wanted to release a game that would run on higher settings in the future, which is good but also frustrating if you have a lower spec PC. Irritating to install and having to save progress to windows live i thought was a bit cheeky, but I can live with it. So, you do need to always be on-line to play properly, although R'star said that didn't matter. Graphically the game is great and with the adjustable sliders you can get the framerate you want - turning off the variable light source/shadows etc doesn't make that much of a difference at that level - might be different if you had a very top spec machine. The 4 stars, instead of 5, is for the windows live issue and because the game is a bit linear at times - getting called up to move the game through the plot can be annoying when you want to have a more open-ended exploration. Anyway, if your PC is relatively up-to-date (last 18 months), has an acceptable video card (check R'stars advice on this or go to the Nvidia website), and the drivers are updated, then it should run okay. Good luck!
Disappointing December 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First of all, Rockstar protected their game with the controversial SecuROM and I can't say I'm very happy about it. We all too well remember what happened with Spore..
Then you need to install Rockstar Social Club in order to run the game and apparently, it is not possible to save your game if you are not connected to it, many users have this problem but I can't say, I haven't been able to go as far as to actually save the game. Also there is no known way to make a backup of your save games.
The game is limited to one installation so if you change anything in your computer hardware you're gonna have to ask Rockstar to unlock your license so you can reinstall the game..
Now, for the game itself, thousands of players are complaining across the net about the very low quality of the port. The game was originally designed for consoles and the computer version is not nearly as optimized as it should be. My computer meets the requirements and yet, even if I play in 800x600 with all the graphical options at the minimum possible, my frame rate will not go above 40 fps (and the game looks really bad).
I would like to be able to actually give of a review of the game itself but I can't really enjoy playing it as the graphics give me the impression I am playing a game from the last century.
I am very disappointed by Rockstar on this, especially since history is repeating itself. In 2002, when they released GTA III fo PC the same problems already appeared and it took them a few weeks to release a patch that solved most of them. That is the main problem with the game industry now, we buy games and we end up being beta testers, having to cope with everything they did not test properly.
So no, GTA IV for PC is not worth the price they sell it and I would advise anyone against buying it. Too bad I didn't know that when I bought it.
PS: I would have given it 0 star but 1 is the minimum
Well..I like it! December 5, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
So...after reading the comments, i was tempted to pack the game up and send it back. I'm glad I didnt!
I installed the game a few hours ago..so this obviously isnt a full review. Firstly my PC has no problem running this game. Its custome built and I wont bore you with specs. Suffice to say it meets minimum requirements + runs windowns XP (service pack 3). Whilst I do feel it dosnt take full advantage of my hardware, ultimetly the game is more than its graphics alone.
So..installing the game. Yes..its long and tedious with numerous securtiy features..all of which have been discussed by other reviews. Once that's done you then need to set up your game. Its no diffrent from any previous GTA game. Plenty of customisable options...but, it seems here the game wants to make its own decisions rather than let me make them when it comes to the video options. Whilst i can get it to recognise my set up with no problem, it just wont let me max out the game graphics...and by this I mean it physically wont do it.So, I let the game use its auto set up options and off I went! All is forgiven when the game starts up. Its looks "great" even on medium graphics setting..but as I said, there is more to a game than what it looks like. It plays and feels like previous GTA titles (as it should) and feels instantly familiar but oh so new at the same time. 2 hours in and I know this game could well become one of my fave games ever.
To sum it up.. If you played the previous GTA games on PC and enjoyed them, you'll be playing it anyway no matter what the negative views have to say.
If your new to the GTA series you may well like this game. Dont buy it for your kids. This is not for under 18s..its for mature players only. The previous posts about the game crashing + game performance..well I've had no problems so far, but rockstar themselves have stated a small portion of users have a stability issue (lets be honest..every PC is diffrent) and they are working on a patch right now.
Give it a go..I suspect you'll enjoy it! I know I am!
Unbelievable... December 5, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Unbelievable... Well, not really. I own and have played the hell out of GTA4 on my PS3. But I remain, first and foremost, a PC guy. So I waited for the PC version to come out so that I can buy it. Even though I had extensively played the game on the PS3, I bought it on the PC as well. I always do the same thing for games I really like and for companies I respect. I really liked the game on PS3 and I really respected the company behind it. Did you notice the "ed" right after "respect"? Well, the PC version of this game is not for the faint of heart, and I don't mean by way of its adult rating. I mean by way of technical skills, of which I had to use many just to get the game running. It took me an afternoon and most of the following night, just to get the thing working (fortunately for me I have a better-than-average PC so the game run fine after that, although how can a game that runs great on a 4 year-old peace of hardware that is the XBOX 360 needs all that horsepower to run on a PC is beyond me). The funny thing is that, my day job requires me to manage and doctor a 154 computer network, 2 domain controllers and a bunch of servers... And I am actually pretty good at it... So, Rockstar is trying to tell me that even though I can do all that, I need 10+ hours just to make their game work...??? I must be really stupid or something, 'cause I don't get it... Anyway, if you value your time, don't buy this game, not on the PC. If you do buy it, be prepared to fight for your right to run it (I've noticed that there are some people that did not have any problems running it from the start, but they're the exception that verifies the rule). If you value your money, don't buy this game. Rockstar has managed (somehow, 'cause its a real feat) to take a product with a budget and production values going through the roof and reduce it to something resembling the infamous Trespasser. For those of you that have no idea what Trespasser is, well... It had dinosaurs... And bugs. And... That's it. It may even have been the most bugged-on-release game ever released. But... At least Trespasser RAN!
I ve been waiting more then 1 year for this game December 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I hade the impression that the graphics resolutions was at 640x480 when I was playng the game, the graphics were terrible , when I hade look my settings were 1440 x 900. with every think overclocked to the limit cpu ,ram , and 8800gt I was getting only 9 Frames per second I'm able to run crysis at 32 frames per seconde on high settings and the latest Call of Duty at 39 frames per seconds also with high settings. If you buy this game you will have terrible frame rates even at medium settings.and graphics from 1990
