Product Description Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is an explosive open-world action game set in a massive, highly reactive, war-torn world.
Amazon.co.uk Review
If there really isn't any such thing as bad publicity then Mercenaries 2 is already doing superbly. It certainly already has its fair share of infamy, after being denounced by the Venezuelan government as propaganda for the U.S. Army and even dragging Bono (who part owns developer Pandemic) into a row over its probity. Mind you North Korea weren't too keen about the first game either and that turned out all right. The reason poor Bono's name has been dragged into the dirt is that the game's plot revolves around a U.S. led invasion of Venezuela after a dictator takes control in a coup. It's pretty hard to get offended about a game as gleefully silly as this though as its interests are clearly not politics but simply blowing things up as creatively as possible. As before you're dropped into the war zone and free to ply your mercenary trade with whomever you want. However, this time you're in charge of your own PMC (Private Military Company) and get to set up your own base and recruit your own soldiers. Owning your own PMC gives you a lot more control over how exactly you play the game in what is essentially Grand Theft Auto in a warzone. Everything you see can be completely destroyed from innocuous shrubbery to be the biggest buildings. You can now swim as well and there's lot more vehicles and gadgets, from helicopters to grappling hooks. With an online co-op mode as well even Hugo Chavez couldn't fail to be entertained (maybe). Hmmmm November 10, 2008 Mercs 1 has to be one of my all time favourite games, so obviously i thought mercs 2 would be the same...i was wrong :(
dont get me wrong, some aspects of the game are great, and at times i really really enjoyed it. but all the bugs/glitches just ruined it for me, and i found the storyline rather tedious.
people mention all the explosions, which do look very nice, only problem i found was that i blew a building up, walked around a bit, came back, and as if by magic the building had returned to its former glory! what a waste of money/oil for nothing!
some glitches dont bother me at all, like people just suddenly dropping dead, the helicopters that aimlessly spin in circles, and the cars that decide they have had enough, and flip over and explode!
some glitches do really ruin the game. like when i drove past a house, next thing i know im uder the house and cant get out, i mean, what the hell is that all about?!?! and one part where i was shooting at a guy on a boat a few feet in front of me, but my bullets sonehow went through him like he was some kind of ghost, in the end i ran out of ammo, and he killed me, meaning i had to start the mission from scratch, ANNOYING!
the vehs, tanks esp are destroyed to easily, so when i pay lots of money/oil for one, i dnt expect to be destroyed by a nobody with a pistol! (ok maybe im stretching the truth a little, but near enough!) and my vehs keep dissapearing, i park up near a faction base, go in, come out and its vanished AAAAAAAHHHH im determined to finish it completely, but not for the fun of it, just so i know i havnt wasted my hard earned cash.
i really do not know what EA were doing, surely the games testers noticed these problems. i guess that with all the hype on dead space, fifa and everything else they have coming out, that they thought the fans of the old game would just buy mercs 2 (which i did foolishly)
if/when it comes down in price its worth getting just to run around, shoot the hell out of everyone, still some beasty tanks (just dont get shot whilst in it) and shoot up some building, but whilst the price remains high i would avoid, unless you really have to buy it, but with so many great games coming out at the moment, i dont think it will be hard to avoid>
If only being a Mercenary was this cool!! October 30, 2008 This instalment of mercenaries is bang on the mark as a debut for 360, it has a mixture of open ended mayhem right from the start as you storm your enemies mansion trying to take it over as a future HQ by blowing up and shooting everything in sight with OTT consequences lol. Also this game adds alot of diversity in weapons, vehicles and air strikes and so forth.
You start off by selecting 1 of 3 characters available to you and then your plunged straight into it as you try to get payback on the person who hired you but didn't pay out for your services. Eventually leading you to befriending and then suddenly turning your back! on several military and vigilante forces all with their obvious characteristics of modern day factions and armies. All of which make you run round as their secret workhorse doing all of their dirty work but all paying very substatial bounties, in the form of either; money, equipment or a certain amount of satisfaction as you look on at your prior attempt of dropping a nuclear bomb on a helpless target while your character comes up with a whitty and funny remark.
The main aspects used in this game is OTT mayhem and mindless violence, with a splash of revenge and all mixed together with how can you break the destruction limit next time round (this will honestly take some time with the amount of explosives that are on offer to you). Almost every single piece of environment in this game can be blown up, adding to many different combinations of how to complete a objective; i.e. you could either rush in with a heavy tank and blow it up from the inside while smoking a cigar or sit up on a hill from a distance and watch it all light up like news years eve as you call in a airstrike.
The good points about this game are:- -Endless game play, the area is not as big or as interactive as GTA4, but who can really top that these days without making it a RPG based environment. There are that many things to experiment with or collect you will have to put your diary on hold for at least 2 weeks in order to experience the feel of this. -Variety, there are more than enough ways to complete a mission as stated prior to this section, there is a bigger selection of toys in this game than there is in a argos catalogue and also theres various types of missions available (the occasional bird smuggling task is mixed in for a comedy moment -one of many!) -Graphics & Sounds, although they may not be of CoD4/GTA4 standard they are still nicely modelled and presented with good detail especially with the vehicle sounds and the environment layout i.e. sunsets etc. -Controls, the controls have been kept to a reasonable and basic layout with no fancy specifications. 1 button for a number of uses is one way to put it. -CoOp, this is a good feature as people can just drop in and out making it a more enjoyable experience including twice the destruction, and also is a good way to earn money early on when you play with someone more experienced. -The grapple hook, this is a great idea and a great way of taking over a enemy helicopter without having to get yourself shot to death to much as you can fire it when reasonably close to one and then you can just pull yourself up and have a funny fight with the pilot.
But as with all games nowadays they have some downfalls:- -Gllitches, the odd glitch does appear from of old where you fall through various surfaces and also i have experienced problems getting out of the water in CoOp but these have disappeared mostly now due to an update a while ago. -AI, sometimes this is not all that decent due to people on your side mistaking you for a target while walking by them and also other drivers in vehicles will just drive round without even thinking your there as they try to drive straight into you. -Repetitiveness, when hijacking a vehicle you always have to play the same old minigame of pushing the required buttons in the time limit or else you'll get thrown off/out. YAWN!!!
But all in all the good in my opinion will always out way the bad in this game and deservedly gains an 8/10 in my records and hopefully will take the bad points into consideration for their next outing.
Awful (but nearly good) October 24, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
After reading several reviews about this I took a risk and bought it. However, I soon realised this was a big mistake!
The game is almost unplayable and full of glitches. The character phrases are also repeated way too often - seriously you will literally be made sick by the repetition (Ammo! Ammo! GOD!!!!). The script is also cheesy and steals lines from famous films (which are changed slightly).
Not good....avoid unless you get it cheap/2nd hand.
Most fun on the X360 so far! October 23, 2008 I think I am not as critical of this game as some of the other reviews as I never played the original. For me this is a brand new game...... and what a good one! The closest game to this is GTA, however it is also totally different. You can free roam, have missions to complete, but that's where the similarity ends. A seemingly endless selection of weapons and vehicles which you can use to kill, destroy and generally cause as much havoc with as you can possibly imagine! (MOAB's are great fun!) The vehicles and weapons are pretty easy to use and with lots of side contracts, you can just veer away from the main storyline and just keep blowing things up as much as you like. Had it less than a week, and completed it last night, this game has caused many a late night! My only criticisms are that I have found a few annoying bugs where a HVT 'disappears', buildings blow up and you cant get out and buildings that are totalled still show as not destroyed, and the last 2 missions are maybe a bit too easy, especially compared to some of the ones in the middle of the game, but these are not nearly enough of an issue to move it away from 5 stars! (and I haven't even played online yet!)
Destructive, if unpolished, fun October 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I played the first Mercenaries on the PlayStation 2, and it was a fantastic game. The sequel is more of the same, just bigger and better.
You play a mercenary out for revenge whilst also trying to make a tidy profit(I won't spoil the plot, but trust me there isn't much of it). You take on various missions for different factions as well as various challenges usually involving a race against time. You need to keep all the factions happy as best you can in order to be able to buy better weapons, vehicles and airstrikes.
The scale of destruction is what sets Mercenaries apart from similar games, such as GTA. You can call in airstrikes ranging from bombing runs to nuclear missiles and the explosions are nothing short of spectacular. Just about anything can be destroyed and the sheer amount of carnage you can cause is a sight to behold.
Graphically, the game has not come a long way. It looks fine, and vehicle models are especially good, but it's not pushing the 360 to its limits on textures. However, there is huge scope. The game world is large and detailed, and any game that allows you to go anywhere is going to have to compromise somewhere. The lighting is very good and animation does the job. To be honest, Mercs 2 isn't trying to be hyper-realistic at any point so it's acceptable.
The controls are quite easy to get to grips with, although vehicle control takes a little practice. You can hijack anything, including helicopters, or call in supplies which will be dropped off by your support team. Taking charge of combat vehicles usually involves a short button-mashing minigame - these can get a bit tedious after a while.
There is a co-op mode which means another player can join your game and help complete missions or just to blow stuff up. It works OK for a while but I think it's preferable to play through the campaign on your own.
Mercenaries 2 is a fun game which works well most of the time. Some of the missions are quite challenging but the freedom you are given means you find an approach to suit your playing style that will get you through it.
Unfortunately the game has its share of glitches; your character may get stuck and only a re-load of your saved game will correct it, or things disappear, blow up randomly or won't work. These can lead to missions becoming impossible and re-loading again. It can really make the teeth grind, but so far I have just about forgiven the game for it.
It can be annoying and frustrating, but overall Mercenaries 2 is enough fun to be a worthwhile play.
