Amazon.co.uk Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter. The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles | Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat | World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever | The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes | The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world. Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity. Key Features - Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
- Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
- Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
- Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
- Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

Game will not work...! Can't play it, can't rate it - but have paid for it... December 3, 2008 What can I say? Bought the game and like many, many others have wasted many hours to try and get it to work. Without any success of course. At least got some use out the game in a sense I suppose. It's a great shame 'cause my friends are able to play COD5 and seem to be enjoying it very much.
Treyarch dropped the ball December 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Playing this after CoD4 is a huge disappointment. I'm one of the few lucky ones who actually got the game to work with no major problems. The level design is abysmal, most FPS games are linear but this one harkens back to those on rails shooters from days gone by in its level design. The constantly respawning enemies have always been a pet hate of mine, but respawning right behind you in the middle of your squad? thats new. I tried very hard to think of something I like about this game and the multiplayer Zombie mode is probably the only redeeming quality you'll find in this rushed out mess of a game, the weapons feel pathetic, the level design is truly awful with only the 1st couple of Russian levels edging it past Daikatana in terms of utter pants on head rubbishness. A final mention must go to the A.I .... or lack thereof. Your squad mates are about as useful as a paper fire axe and as accurate as the bbc weather forecasts. The enemy seem all too aware of this and pretty much ignore your "buddies" and charge you headlong like the Zerg from starcraft, your pals seem happy to return the favour and continue discussing last night episode of heroes or something, completely oblivious to your plight while the Japanese horde take turns making you into their own personal bayonet kebab. The co-op modes might redeem the game a little but after watching me playing this tripe nobody would agree to go and buy the game so I could try them out.
I preferred COD4 - but pretty good December 1, 2008 I've had no problems running this game - running on XP Pro, Core 2 Duo, 8800GT.
Graphics are pretty - but not groundbreaking. Single player gameplay is fast and furious, with plenty of ambushes to keep you on your toes. Personally I found COD4 more immersive and satisfying. To me COD5 in gameplay terms seems a bit like a backward step - more akin to the earlier COD titles. However, it is still a good game and a worthy addition to the lineup.
Really poor, a ticket to PC crash city. December 1, 2008 Terrible game, virtually no testing prior to release, will only work on select PC's.
Showed great promise but is so full of bugs you'll be restarting your PC more than playing the game.
Stay well away.
Bit bugged, very pretty though. November 30, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I see other people have reported issues with graphics cards. I had no problem installing the game on Vista 32bit. It did install DirectX 9.0C at the same time though, but I just let it get on with it. Since installation, I have checked my DirectX 10 games and they still all work, so although it may seem like a retrograde, its ok.
There are some bugs though. The biggest one I have found so far is with the mortars. It won't let me aim with a mortar. It just seems to skip forward to the point of impact. So I can point the mortar in the general direction of a tank, go to aim, and boom! Its as if I have already fired. Consequently, I can't progress in the game past the bit with the mortars and the tanks.
Up until that point though, the game is pretty fun. Being able to call in airstrikes on a whim is nice, and most of the familiar old weapons from COD are back. Some of the Japanese rifles are rubbish though. However, I do think I have been spoiled by the likes of Far Cry 2 and Stalker, as the game is 100% linear and you are literally following a path.
Aside from that, multiplayer is refusing to work for me, which is a crying shame, as COD has always been about MP for me. When it is patched properly, and assuming MP is decent, I will hopefully be able to delete this review and give it a more favourable score. I used to be in a COD clan and it was great fun playing clan wars on the original COD. I am still waiting for a worthy successor. Whether MP will give me that I don't know, but I live in hope.
