Amazon.co.uk What does the American Dream mean today? For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity. As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don't.Beginning with the 1997 release of the original Grand Theft Auto, the GTA series has been one of the most prolific, controversial and down right entertaining franchises in video games history. This pedigree of success guarantees that the highly anticipated eleventh game in the series, Grand Theft Auto IV, will garner at least as much attention if not more.
Return to Liberty City. | The dream as Niko expected it. View larger. | There's always a catch. View larger. | But some skills are international. View larger. | The Plot Grand Theft Auto IV is a brand new adventure in the GTA universe following the experiences of Nikolai "Niko" Bellic, a new immigrant from an undisclosed eastern European country whose troubled pa st and the persuasion of his cousin Roman have brought him to the fictional Liberty City. Unfortunately, Niko's search for the American Dream and a much needed fresh start, hits an immediate snag when the rags to riches story Roman spun to pique Niko's interest is exposed as not only a complete fabrication, but a ploy to enlist Niko's well-known skills as a tough guy against the ample list of enemies clamouring for Roman's debt-ridden blood. Because Roman is the only person Niko knows in Liberty City he begrudgingly accepts his role as Roman's protector despite the deception. But as time goes on Niko comes into his own, and his experience on the wrong side of the tracks proves more valuable than he could have ever imagined as he fights for survival and later supremacy on the crime ridden streets of Liberty City.Game Environments Based on several of the boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey, Liberty City, familiar to players of previous games in the series, has been entirely redesigned for GTA IV. Players can expect visible detail down to the weeds growing in the cracks in the sidewalk, cars and buildings of visibly different ages and a much greater level if verticality in the buildings and bridges that they are able to explore as Niko moves through the city streets. In addition, pedestrians in GTA IV are much more realistic. No longer simply moving cardboard cut-outs, these NPCs are intelligent, modern, human representations that laugh, cry, eat, drink, use cell phones and ATMs, and talking amongst themselves regardless of Niko's interaction with them. Gameplay Historically GTA games have focused heavily on mission-based play, requiring successful completion of fixed tasks in order for players to progress through the game, but this has changed to a great extent in GTA IV. Players will experience an entirely new and exciting emphasis centred on the blending of on-mission and off-mission play, resulting not only in an increased sense of realism, but more interesting and unrestricted gameplay. Features Aside from the car jacking and a detailed city environment here are the new features for GTA IV: - Improved combat system - Now you can use cover and also a target lock system, which allows you to take out targets with greater ease and accuracy. Plus, you can engage in some hand-to-hand combat if you can't get your hands on a piece quick enough.
- Cell phone - Not just for basic phone calls anymore. Use your in-game cell phone to receive missions via SMS, snap photos, and ZiT (tag) songs that can be downloaded exclusively on Amazon.com/mp3.
- Free time - In between missions you can take advantage of "me" time. There are gentleman's clubs, comedy clubs, bowling alleys, and bars, which all house unique activities.
- Take a break from the storyline - A variety of side missions allow you to help run a car service, "borrow" cop cars, assassinate targets, help solve problems for those on the street, or take to the air with stunt jumps that are scattered all over the city.
- Control your own fate - Throughout the game choice moments will arrive causing you to make a decision that will affect relationships and money.
Multiplayer Give Niko a rest and create your own multiplayer "hero." GTA has added multiplayer modes allowing you to take your creation out to play online in competitive, co-op, and free form modes. Competitive mode has you fighting against the cops, jacking cars, or racing to finish odd jobs. Co-op challenges you and your friends with various tasks including Hangman's NOOSE where you are responsible for escorting a wanted kingpin to a safe extraction point. Freeform lets you and 15 others lose on Liberty City. Use this mode to hit up the bar and play virtual darts versus each other or head out to the streets and set up your own drag races. If you can dream it, you can do it in Freeform mode.

Truth is simple about gta4. It's NOT cult. November 17, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
You don't need anything more than that in this review. You 'll play it, you'll like it, you won't regret buy it, but my friend, when you are wondering what is it, that it lucks, this "je ne sais pas", let me open your eyes, lonely friend, sitting in front of your giant HDTV.
IT IS NOT A CULT GAME. It's mainstream this one. After 5 years the world is not the shame. And save some mormon/evangelist or the Mothers United, no one else is shocked or even at the least moved by what the GTA is putting out there.
And it's not just the frame that has changed.
The Soundtrack is not CULT. Your character is NOT as CULT as it could be, given the Serbian nature. You don't get all the picko, and the pusi kurac you'd want from him. There is not a good amount of Greeks. This context called for Greeks. The Game is not CULT. It's a mainstream, well made sandbox game. Nothing more than that unfortunately.
Doesn't mean it's not better than a WHOLE BUNCH of games out there. Definitely worth buying, playing, and re-playing. Just not a classic. Certainly not a potato.
.NOT A POTATO.
Still love it, but not as much as Vice City And San Andreas November 13, 2008 Read loads of mixed opinions from reviewers on here since it was released in April, but decided to wait till all the hype went away before I said what I think.
Right, first of all love all the GTA games so going to be a bit biased. Some random new things that I like about this is the way you can hear the radio from your vehicle when you are not in it, the echo sound of your vehicle when you drive under a bridge, seeing other get arrested for attacking you, the sat nav, taking a cab, the new vigilante cop sytem, advertising the city through television (loved this but would be brilliant with loads of hilarious adverts like vice city radio).
Things I don't like are darts (way too easy and no challenge), ten pin bowling (again too easy and no challenge). I just prefer the things to do in San Andreas like gambling, sky diving, mountain bike racing etc etc. Dating I don't like and only did it in San Andreas for the extra uniforms. I don't like the so called realness of this either for example the vehicles. A lot of reviewers have moaned about the vehicles being more difficult to handle, but I don't find them difficult just much less fun than than the previous gtas.
Another thing I don't like is that there seems to be loads of missions where you take on loads of gangs and take them on by yourself (which makes me laugh when people say this is more realistic than previous gtas) but these missions can sometimes take ages, thats what I find personally annoying about them.
Sorry if my review sounds really negative but its only because I love the gta games so much. I do still really like this game and still give it five stars but not as much as vice city and san andreas which I still occasionaly play and still never fail to enjoy. This is the first gta game of this generation like 3 was of the last generation but without the wow factor of that game, so the next one should be something special.
What I would love for a future gta game is to be set in vice city and san andreas again but with modern graphics with all the good things from this and back to the fun feel of old (vehicle handling and sillyness etc.) mixed with seasonal weather. I would love a seasonal weather and a day/date/month sytem, halloween, bonfire night, christmas etc, drunken santas like in bully. Animals and children would be great because they add to the realism. If this is a problem then why not make it so they can't get hurt, unrealistic but so what, another essential for me would be to ride horses, blow up buildings and watch them magically appear five minutes later, again unrealistic but thats what I loved about gta in the first place. I could go on and on about the things I would like in a future gta, but I am supposed to commenting on gta 4 (sorry). So overall still love gta 4, but found it less enjoyable than previous gtas.
Better than Vice, not as good as San Andreas November 13, 2008 I've had GTA 4 for about a week now, and quite frankly, I'm bored of it already. In fact, I almost feel guilty that I've only completed about 40% of the game, but its too much of an effort to even turn on the console. I remember buying San Andreas the day it came out and playing the game solid for about a month. It was fun to play and there was so much to do, so if I had some free time, I looked forward to playing it. I can't say the same for GTA 4 unfortunately. In fact, in my opinion its a step down from San Andreas, although it probably is a bit better than Vice. There's less fun, the missions are extremely repetitive and after a while you just get bored with everything about the game. People have said that the game is realistic, but believe me its not, and others have said there's more stuff to do, but again thats a load of rubbish. Not only is there very little new about the game, but there's less stuff to do than in San Andreas. What the hell happened?!!! Now if your a GTA fan reading this review, then there's no point in me telling you not to buy it, because you will. I'm just sharing my opinion on the whole matter. Unless the game somehow picks up, all I can say is that the people who rated this as 5 star must have very very boring lives. Its the only reason I can give for someone that finds this game fun and exciting. Waste of money!!!
Spring Look not free look November 6, 2008 Am I the only one that thinks the control system is broken in this game, every other 3ps game like this now has propper freelook on the right stick. i.e. you can look in a different direction than you are walking. point the camera where you want and it will stay there. ususlly with a button to recenter if you want. but rockstar have opted for a springlook which is a free look when stationary but springs fwd direction when you walk or drive. this means contiually fighting the spring look if you want to look around while moving which is realy nesesary in this sort of game i.e. i want to throw a grenade walk awayand see the carnage, i want to look down side streets as i drive by no you cant you have to look fwd as we dont believe you have the skill to use propper freelook control. .result cant enjoy the wonderful city they created cant enjoy the game. stopped playing as this really frustrated me. Another one EDGE got wrong 10 ha no way. crackdown topped this a year ago.
Same old. Saints Row is far far better. November 5, 2008 I've enjoyed all the others, and had heard so much mad hype about this one. So now I'm playing it, been enjoying it - yeah it does look amazing, a technical achievement etc.. but..
But that 'fun' feels very familiar to me, like the exact same fun of playing all the previous games - You run, you shoot, you drive, you do jobs, you run some more, you listen to the funny radio shows, sun up, sun down... er, and that's it. I realised 'This really isn't the huge leap forward in gaming that people are making out'. I mean, 5 star reviews?! Come on, at the end of the day this is all the same stuff from the last games.. with a shiny polish. The enemy AI is still moronic, and they've taken out haircuts too.
I tell a lie, it's not as fun as the previous games. The top-down original was more satisfying than this 'realistic' world. To my mind GTA was never meant to be realistic but more like a ludicrous action flick. As MX83 says below - the fun stuff has been ripped out.
You can't spend your money on anything, oh, and once again, the bridges start out 'closed' for some reason and if you stray so much as 1 pixel over - you are hunted and shot down as a five star criminal... And here in the 21st Century this game gives you: a PRINTED MAP. What a stupid game.
There's been Mercenaries, Just Cause, Crackdown, Saints Row before this - all proving you can do something different with the formula. Crackdown may not have motion-captured strippers but it is a hellofa lot more FUN to play. And I can't believe how customisable Saints Row is, clothes, face, cars, and masses of crazy music. It's what GTA4 should've been.
After four games they should really be adding something very new to the mix, not just respraying everything.
At this rate, GTA 5 will be.... A slightly different city? with some new cars, and, oh i don't know.. slightly different buildings? I can barely contain my excitement.
