Fable : Lost in hype June 24, 2008 Despite this game now being old, every PC owner should play this game pure and simple.
Created by well-known Games designer Peter Molyneux, head of Lionhead studios, famous for other innovative titles such as Black and White, or The movies.
Now for those of you that don't know, Molyneux said some pretty drastic things during press conferences. He claimed plants would be growing I real time that there would be rival NPCS to name a few, the games sales suffered greatly due to this. But of course, on the old Xbox his was just a dram, an unrealistic goal. Fable for the PC is a port, from the console, so obviously it going to have the same flaws.
The graphics are stunning, I'm going to say that right away, I had to buy a new graphics card to play this game (I have an old computer!) , the designs are clever, interesting and you never get bored when finding your way. The way your character evolves as you play is clever, but seems a little forced, if you play for long enough you can predict what your character will look like, and changing their alignment is as simple as changing clothes (that's all you have to do)
Another frustrating thing about this game are the loading times, moving between parts of the map take about 5 - 10 seconds, which is understandable due to the graphics, but can get annoying if you accidentally walk through one during combat.
Now then, combat is a massive part of Fable, there are three main classes, Warrior (sword), Range (bow and arrow) and will (magic) each with unique abilities that can be upgraded depending on how you use your spells. The close combat really comes down to button - mashing, yet mixing the three creates a very clever combat system that allows you to beat all enemies of the game.
As a hardcore gamer I found Fable to be fairly easy, but after talking to various people the difficulty curb is just right. The bosses are predictable, but challenging and some sections, like the Arena (A roman style coliseum, where you must fight rounds of enemies for treasure) bring out the best of combat in this respect.
Then there's the story, I'm not going to spoil anything, I'm sure you can find that information elsewhere if you want to, but the story is very compelling, making full use of the "good" or "bad" decisions that affect your character's appearance. Even though these appearances are very bland and can be changed easily, it still adds heart to the story.
And now for the interesting bit, the lost chapters are actually an additional pack. It includes around 5 ours of new playtime from the original Fable, taking you to new exciting places, and including new enemies, weapons and monsters.
I could go on for hours about Fables brilliant side quests, and other interesting options, but that would ruin the point of the game.... exploration. Here is so much to do in this interactive world, get married, take over a bordello, and find all the silver keys there's just so much to do.
In conclusion, this game is fantastic, it's a shining example of a great RPG that was wrongly over-hyped, I recommend you to play this before Fable 2 is released.
Fable: Word to the perants buying this. April 3, 2008 0 out of 12 found this review helpful
Fable overall is an attractive and beautiful world. However this game is not for the light hearted, in this game you can choose to be a hero or a villain, but the problem I found with this game is that the bad choices which you make as a villain are extremely evil. It is not the type of evil which I thought it would be, like making a mildly bad choice that was increase your evil rating. Instead time and time again you are forced to choose between killing someone for personal gain or saving them and receiving nothing.
As an example of this, later in the already short game you have to make the choice between killing your character's sister for power or casting the power aside. Other times include killing heroes for their spirits and eventually choosing between killing your trainer or some creature. Personally I imagined that the more good things you do the less bad decisions you would have to face, but I was wrong. Time and time again you are forced to choose between revenge/power or saving/forgiveness. This is not the type of decisions that should be trusted upon anyone. The evil decisions should have been a lot less evil.
I played the main story in about 11 hours and after I had completed the story I had discovered to my horror that there was nothing more to the game then, sex, robbery, purchasing houses and running around like an idiot with nothing to do. You couldn't even access the arena from previously in the game. If this game allowed access to the arena and had given you side bosses then this game would have been a lot better. And the evil in this game was so extreme that I threw the game away! (It's not like I would miss such a small story with nothing to do after the game.)
This game had a lot of potential but It doesn't cut the mustard , the bosses aren't even challenging! It feels as if this game is a demo, it feels like it is just showing you a fraction of what it has to offer.
The music of this game is depressing , it is too gory and the bad decisions are too evil. And it would be nice if you would actually gain something from being good.
I hope this helps anyone planning purchase this game.
Does not work with MS Visio February 27, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this game today and I was really excited about playing it. It uploaded fine, and was able to play the beginning of the game okay (although, not great - it was very slow).
HOWEVER, I then went to move into the second chapter, and I can hear the music, but I cannot see anything on the screen (i.e. it is a completely black screen), and nothing I do will change this.
I've done some research on the internet and I'm not the only person who has this problem. Apparently, a lot of people (not all, but a lot of people) with visio are not able to play this game.
The game looks fantastic and from friends who have played it they say its good fun. However, I can't play this, because of Visio (everything else on my computer is well above the minimum spec for this game.
Of coursse, microsoft also don't do patches for their games, so it looks like there is no hope that I'll ever be able to play it.
So in conclusion, buy this game if you have XP, but be extremely weary if you have visio, because it's likely that you won't be able to play it.
THE ABSOLUTE ACTION cRPG! October 29, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you haven't yet played this game, well, you don't know what you are missing... FABLE-THE LOST CHAPTERS is a game so full of great ideas that later games could not stop imitating (and isn't imitation the best form of compliment?). After being an X-BOX title for too long, it eventually got released for PCs.
The game is a Third-Person cRPG starting with your character as a little boy made witness to his village burning and his family getting murdered. The orphan then gets schooled in a military academy (one of the most subtle and best designed tutorials EVER!) and graduates to face his first quest. From then on, this beautiful non-linear and multileveled game never lets you without a fresh surprise!
Sure, there is hacking and slashing and sharpshooting to our hearts content; however, this cRPG's ambitions do not expire there. Your character will grow, acquire scars and marks, get haircuts and tattoos - whereas his body shape and height will depend on his habits, training and alignment. You can buy a house, impress the ladies and even get married. There are also a number of mini-games within FABLE, from gambling to fishing and prize-duels.
The graphics are beautiful (a bit dated today yet still much better than most systems can handle). Facial expressions and body movements are fluid and natural, whereas, grass, flowers and tree branches move to the wind and in your path. There is a weather system and night-and-day alterations. In FABLE you will see the best sunrise and the most rich sunset sky colors EVER! When a scenery moves you enough you can even take a...in game picture that can be viewed later (they are saved in a special folder in MY DOCUMENTS). I am telling you, Peter Molyneux left nothing to chance! Whatever could be turned on its head, well, it was...
The gameplay is plain brilliant! The controls are intuitive and the lower-edge-of-the-screen shortcuts could not be more user-friendly. Looting is usual and merchants are abundant. Weapons and armor are well designed (nothing like the childish ones in...NWN) and special unique sets (rarely) available.
I have completed this game at least three times (the last one was this summer) - and I have enjoyed all of them immensely! Now that the price has dropped, it's even a bargain!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
This game will influence the great games of the future. September 22, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yet again Lionhead Studios have delivered a game full of original concepts and charm. You can't help love this game as you begin to play it with the feeling that the story could really go anywhere with the main character growing up, deciding whether to do good or evil deeds and it having an effect on the characters appearance. The visuals are stunning at times and they really set the atmosphere, which is boosted heavily by the "Edward Scissor Hands/Tim Burton" style of music.
Although the game has great ideas, you can't help feel a little let down at the end as the potential you feel the new ideas have when at the beginning of the game are not fully realised by the time you reach the finish. Still very enjoyable throughout and probably one of the best games you'll play if you like an adventure.
