Sony BDPS350 Blu-ray Disc Player 1080p Full HD November 30, 2008 i bought this player last week, easy set up and installation,so far i've only got spiderman 3 on blu ray, very quick start up after inserting disc, also very quiet operation of the player skipped to the scene where spiderman is sitting on top of the church spire, was amazed at the quality of the picture with dark cloudy skies, grey church spire, black spiderman suit & rain, every drop of rain was seen and the detail on the black spiderman suit was amazing i then tried lord of the rings extended edition dvd & was stunned at the level of upscaling my tv is a samsung 50" plasma which goes uo to 1080i & the picture is fantastic wether blu ray or dvd a great purchase at an excellent price
Stunning Realism for Very Little Cash! November 28, 2008 I have matched this with the KDL-W4500 40 inch TV and the quality reproduction of Blu-ray disc's is astonishingly brilliant and the upscaling of non BD is amazing!
I made a super choice and I have no regrets whatsoever!
Easy to use great quality - super price November 27, 2008 I was very pleased with this player. It runs a quick setup when you switch it on, which ensures the player is configured correctly depending on how you have connected it. There are numerous options under the easy to use menu.
Up-scaling of normal DVDs was superb and has added new life to my DVD collection.
I liked the fact that you can dim or turn off the display at the front of the player - if you watch films on your TV in a drkened room, bright lights on equipment can be a bit if a distraction. So I thought this was a nice touch.
The remote control is well laid out and can actually be programmed to operate a number of other TVs aside from Sony. I have a Toshiba and it works very well.
The load times on disks are longer than you would be used to with a DVD player. However, I have ethernet into my lounge (I accept this may not be the norm!), the player allows you to update it's frimware over the internet, which was easy to set up and had a noticable improvement on load times - even though the load time out of the box was OK.
Feels solidly made and I have had no problems with either Blu-Ray discs or DVDs.
Irritating Omission November 25, 2008 4 out of 11 found this review helpful
I purchased this player a few weeks ago having read many of the reviews both here and on other sites. I had no issues with delivery or claiming the free discs and there are many other testimonies to the look and performance of the unit, most of which I concurr with. However I discovered a problem, which no one else seems to have mentioned, and that is it will not play any Discs containing MP3 tracks. You may ask why would you want it to, well when you are upgrading surely it is reasonable to expect a unit costing this much to give you all the basics of the one being replaced, plus the new facilities you desire. Well not this baby, bonny as it otherwise may be. After being given the runaround by Sony, they confirmed it couldn't, nor would it be able to by means of a firmware upgrade. The reason given was down to cost. This obviously explains why every 30 player can and why it does play a regular audio CD As it happens I also have a relatively new Toshiba player (that did cost 30) and plays anything I have thrown at it so it is not a huge deal and not a big enough reason to return this unit. However this is why I have marked it down in my assessment because I feel it should. So be warned if you are expecting it to play MP3 it won't.
Magnificent Little Beauty November 24, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Ordered this device following a wait whilst 1. Format war was sorted and 2. This 2nd Generation device came on the market.
I set it up as 720p output onto a 768 line LCD panel expecting a small increase over DVD but was astonished by the jump in quality, with a picture that massively exceeds that of DVD in every way - cleaner, clearer, brighter, more detailed etc. It is possible to view a blu ray film at close quarters with NO pixellation or scaling artefacts present. The picture quality is best described as similar to that of a good quality JPEG image viewed on PC monitor. Motion tracking proved faithful also, with non of the judder that is reported when not playing blu rays at 24FPS. I suspect that a big 1080/24fps telly and/or a better HDMI cable would offer an even greater viewing experience, though I find it difficult to see where the picture could be improved. Top marks to Sony and buy with confidence (especially at the price quoted).
