Amazon.co.uk Review
Ask anyone what the scariest game they've ever played is and they'll invariably mention Resident Evil (unless they're trying to be a smart aleck and choose Rise of the Robots). Six years after its original release the mix of cinematic camera angles, shock-horror movie atmosphere and the constant state of panic that having virtually no ammo or health gives you has still never been bettered.

Although films and music are forever being remade, remixed and generally reheated, games never seem to get the same treatment. Resident Evil is bucking that trend, though, and is back with almost another game's worth of extra rooms and puzzles and what are arguably the best graphics ever seen in a video game--we're talking near-photo-realistic characters and a subtle use of light and shadow as has never been seen before.

Ignoring the stodgy control system and incongruous puzzles, the genius of Resident Evil is that you genuinely don't know what'll happen next. Just deciding whether to risk opening a door can be a fearsome and suspenseful experience. The fact that you can only hold half a dozen items at any one time forces you to plan what you're going to do in far more detail than any other action game, deciding which monsters you can afford to shoot and where you can run to if things go pear-shaped. In short, if you're a Resi fan this revamp will be like manna from heaven; if you've yet to experience its dubious delights, you'd better break out the brown trousers right away. --David Jenkins

3 out of 5 stars Barry... look... out... it's... a.... monster   July 31, 2008

Resident Evil for the PSX more or less shares responsibility with Shining Force and Final Fantasy VII for getting me hopelessly hooked on videogames in my early teens. However the laughable attempt to weave a gripping story through B-movie style dialogue was hard to take seriously, even back then. Sadly in this visually stunning remaking, the lousy narrative crushes the tension and seriousness of RE like a giant radioactive turtle would an Ice Cream Truck.

If you're a die hard resident evil fan, you've probably bought it, completed it, enjoyed/ignored the horrific dialogue and voice acting and bought the T-shirt. If you're looking for some classic horror to revive on your Wii, you could do a lot worse than Resident Evil (GC), but don't get your hopes up if you're looking for something with a bit of oomph in terms of narrative.

5 out of 5 stars The best game ever   March 13, 2008

As an avid fan of the Resident Evil series buying this game was only natural. This is the first game I got for my beloved 'Cube and I can only say one word amazing. This is Resident Evil in full glory and is worth every penny.

The graphics are far far better than the original. The dark atmosphere is well acomplished with an updated soundtrack, new lighting and new camera angles. With new areas to explore and more items and game modes to unlock the replay value is high.

If you've played the original the new and updated puzzles are designed to mess with your head and they do just that. The storyline for this version is more in depth than the original. The opening cut scene alone makes this game a worthwhile buy.

There is only one minor downside to the new versiona and that is that they have kept Chris' low item capacity. But despite this I am still giving this game a well deserved 5 stars. Although the original playstation version will still hold a place in my heart, the remake is a true classic.

1 out of 5 stars possibly the worst game i have ever played   December 19, 2007

in all fairness, i dont own this game, i borrowed it from a friend. i dont know much about it , and i only played it for about 2 hours, and did nt even get off the first level on the train, but honestly, the game is just terrible.
1. the game is TOOO SLOW omg whenever you want to go upstairs /downstairs or through doors, it shows u a picture of a guy opening a door, and it takes AGES for it to load.
2. the guns i got were just rubbish, and the storyline did nt make much sence.
3. I COULD NT SEE WHAT I WAS SHOOTING AT, AND I COULD NT SEE WHERE I WAS SHOOTING AT. ITS A 3RD PERSON SHOOTERS, AND IT IS DREADFUL

if you want to buy this because you are a RE maniac, then fine go for it , because ive heard the storyline is good (regardless of what i have said). but if you are just buying it for a good shooter game, DO NOT BUY THIS

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT IDEA FROM CAPCOM !!!   August 2, 2007

I love this game. It is an update of the original 1996 game of the same name. This version looks absolutely gorgeous, & it retains all the creepy atmosphere & shocks. The controls can be awkward sometimes, but this is only a minor complaint. There are some new areas to explore which are refreshing to play.

Resident Evil is one of the very finest games on the Gamecube. Highly recommended !!!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible   July 9, 2007

I first heard about the Resident Evil series years ago, the backstory fascinated me and when the gamecube REmake came out I finally got my chance to play the series. What a stunning introduction it was.

Not only does the Resident Evil series have such an immersive and interesting backstory to it - it also combines that with great and intense gameplay.

The sheer terror of, say, a re-animated Crimson Head sprinting after you or the shuffling, shambolic monstrosity that is Lisa Trevor slowly coming towards you - has not been matched for me in any of the other resident evil games I've played. There's also a hefty array of weaponry to rely upon, as well as the usual puzzles and items.

Graphically the game is simply amazing, having seen screens of the PS2 version the improvement is extremely marked. The visuals of the mansion, with the sometimes confusing, but atmospheric, camera angles, and the sheer levels of detail that have been attended to are stunning.

One, minor, gripe for me would be the control system, the movement is a bit wooden and I was slightly frustrated with the aiming possibilities of up, straight ahead, and the floor - remedied in Resident Evil 4 - but this is hardly enough to detract from an extremely well deserved 5 star rating.

Buy the game, you won't be disappointed!
