Unimpressed - Can't recommend July 26, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered this from a different online retailer and received a wheel with the left gearchange paddle not attached properly so I sent it back. The replacement had the exact same fault so I decided to get a refund and was looking for an alternative on Amazon...
Great wheel May 11, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was in the market for a new wheel, since I wanted to replace my ageing Microsoft Sidewinder with something a little more up to date. After checking out a lot of online reviews of different wheels, this one leaped out at me, for the relatively cheap price, and the good-looking build quality. Plus the previous model received some good reviews.
Well Saitek didn't disappoint, this wheel is great. When combined with games like rFactor, or GT Legends, it comes to life - you feel the car going loose in corners and every rumble strip feels like it should. You feel like you're actually damaging the cars sometimes because of the amazing feedback you get, although for some it might be a little strong (you can turn it down in virtually all games from 100%, and from the control panel too if the games don't support it). I only have a couple of very minor gripes.
1) After a few days the wheel developed an audible squeak when turning. It doesn't detract from the feel, just a little annoying.
2) The pedals have a mind of their own.. Controlling them is fine, it's just that it's hard to keep them staying put in the middle of a full-on race. My pedals are on carpet, and I've always pushed them up to the bottom of the desk, to keep them steady - the trouble is that the shape of them at the back means they don't lend themselves well for sitting flat, as they have two protrusions sticking out that make them want to go sideways if you put pressure on either pedals. Other than this point, which can be distracting during a race, the feel of the pedals is excellent.
The paddles are responsive, and with the option of a sequential gear-shifter that you can swap to the left or right (and uses the same control buttons as the paddles) the wheel is suited as well to rally games. Of course there's nothing stopping you taking it off either, as it can get in the way if you're trying to get to your keyboard.
So overall a brilliant device, great build quality and good (rubber) grip on the wheel itself. I've raced for hours with it, and although if the feedback is set to 100% you'll start to ache, it's great fun!
