4 out of 5 stars Short, but beautiful   November 23, 2008
Poor old Capell. The game opens with the poor chap in prison because everyone thinks he's the liberator and then he's freed on the same basis by a member of his group! He didn't want to be involved and his reluctance is quite clear, but he somehow manages to get caught up in a desperate battle to break the chains attaching the moon to the earth. Ironically, he does look a lot like the liberator and as the game unfolds, you'll learn more about what's happening to the planet because of the chains and you'll learn more about the characters.
The storyline is great, but it takes a long time to really take off. They don't introduce a real villan until the end of the first disc and considering the game is only 2 discs, this is a little bit silly. Character development seems to be ignored for a few of the characters in the party but then again there are up to 18 characters you can play as. Graphics are a little bit of a mixed bag. Some of the maps are beautiful, especially the castles and the land surrounding them, but the over-reliance of dungeons is irritating. There isn't a great variety of enemies, but they're alright and character models are fine. The music is fairly decent and the voice acting is alright, but the twins will probably irritate you.
The game is essentially action based. You tap either A or B to attack, or hold them down for a special. That is it. You cannot really control other members in your party although if you tap Y you can get them to heal. You can select what you want them to do vaguely, i.e. open (do what you want) preserve MP, etc. The rest of the time, you'll be wondering around and interacting with the other characters and environments within the game. It sounds simple and really it is. You'll probably find yourself put off by the first couple of hours which consist of escaping prison and then an awful stealth section through a forest. It does get better.
There are other features but you won't use them much. You can create items, food or weapons and you can also play the flute. Ohhhhh, exciting. Generally, you won't do either of these much although the flute can find secret items. The achievements are basically for cutting chains or completing certain quests in a certain way, i.e. destroying all barrels at the start, killing enemies with the catapault etc.
Is this a good game-yes. It is good, but it is simple. There is little depth to this game, but if you like a decent story with likable characters and enjoy RPGs, I would recommend this game.

5 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by its cover   October 15, 2008
Okay, so it probably has the worst name i've ever heard of but underneath its cliched shell lies a great RPG in undiscovery. The graphics are top notch for a start. Not much you can really fault with them. The story, while a little cumbersome at first, really starts to pick up near the middle of disc 1. I normally find myself dissapointed with the plots of more modern RPGs but i was surprised with how much i wanted to press on with this game to discover what would happen next. A lot of people have criticised the characters, which i find a shame as whilst the main protagonist Capell can be a little annoying at times i find this mainly to do with the voice acting, so basically switch off the voices and just use subtitles.

The gameplay itself is surprisingly deep. Combat is interesting but kinda clunky and a little off-putting to begin with. I found after an hour or so though, i really got into it and started racking up some mean ariel combos and actually enjoying it a lot, so just persevere with the combat engine.

Other gameplay elements i didn't expect were the crafting aspect where you can assemble new weapons, cook food etc. provided your character has the necessary crafting skill. The connect system also intrigued me as you can now talk to other people in towns with other members of your party rather than just the protagonist. It also means you can call on their battle skills with the push of a button, and whilst this felt unnatural at first, it becomes second nature given a bit of practice.

All in all i think this is a great game hiding in a hardened shell of irritating pop-up tutorials and poor voice acting. Seriously people; If you like your action RPGs just bite the bullet and keep at this game until you get to the heart of it, cause it is a fantastic offering.

4 out of 5 stars Really very good.   September 16, 2008
This game is just like any other rpg in terms of structure, the main difference being that in this game, the battles take place in real time. The visuals are nice (apart from some character models) and the landscapes are extremely pleasing to look at. The story is nice enough, the characters likeable (apart from Rico and Rucha, the most annoying duo you will encounter in gaming). The combat is simple but because of it's real time hack and slash nature, the game moves at a refrshingly fast rate (battles do not load, you just run up to an enemy and slice away). Overall, a very nice game.

I would write a really lengthy review...but basically all the points that i would made have already been summed up in previous reviews. I really enjoyed the game. The gameplay is really good (after you get used to it, as there is a lot to take in at first) except for some points like its difficult to use potions in combat as you will have to search through the menu...which doesn't pause the game and there is no quick menu or buttons to assign items to. But after time you will get used to this as i found that my AI controlled characters took care of all the healing and all i needed to do was throw the occasion MP restore potion, but due to this fact its sometimes a good idea to use hit and run tactics with the player controlled character incase it all does go wrong. But overall combat is nice and fluid.

I like the plot as it has a good mix of twists, comedy and tragedy. The only problem being some characters aren't really looked into much as you get them pretty late in the game. I completed the game in about 20 hours, and some of the characters i never got till about 16-17 hours in. So I do wish the game was a little longer. The voice acting is a little naff for one or two characters and some characters keep talking when their lips are no longer moving...this could be because all the characters are part-time ventriloquists, but that would just be speculation.

I know this review sounds negative, but its easier to list dislikes with this game than likes as there so many things i like. Its well worth a go if your into RPGs like me...if not...then you wont be reading my review probably.
