Amazon.co.uk Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter. The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles | Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat | World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever | The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes | The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world. Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity. Key Features - Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
- Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
- Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
- Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
- Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.
Product Description Building on the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine, Call of Duty: World at War thrusts players into the ruthless and gritty chaos of WWII combat like never before.

call of duty world at war on wii November 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had big hopes for this game with it,s mature rating and online multi-player for the first time on this console but unfortunately it ended up being rubbish. To be honnest the call of duty games are actually a good franchise but this is a let down because the developers decided to differenciate this game from the rest by adding in the tilt mechanism to the handling of each weapon, when using manually from side-side it throws out the balance and degree of your swing shots as you attempt to acheive a shot on the enemy or other player and this overall effects the game play in the skill factor required to feel good about the shots you make on the game. I'm fussy particularly with this type of aspect since the days of golden eye or perfect dark on the nintendo 64 (those masterful flick shots) which required skill and added to how well you were doing on the game. This isn't such a problem with the automactics or machine gun type of weapons because you simply point and shoot by completely aiming at your target first but in every shoot'em'up the single shot guns such as the rifles and scoped rifles should be very 'special' indeed as for the most part they are with many games and these weapons in this game do allow you full and straight maneuvourability of the rifles and scoped rifles but then the realism of the game makes them unfun because of the the fact that the sight bobs up & down as you make your shot and you have to work in consistion with this to pull off a successful shot. It ruins the experience entirely!. As far as basic gameplay goes this isn't bad in terms of the one player experience and the added content of the levels, multi-player and unlockables but it,s all about quality not quantity. All the developers needed to do was take call of duty 3 and add in the multi-player modes along with extra content but by trying to be different to vary the franchise it has made a worser game than before. Call of duty 3 would have been gaming gold if it had a multi-player and that was a shame that it didn't! The bottom line is that nintendo wii is more popular than other consoles because of it's unique motlion sensing technology but whats the point in that when its not being used to it's full potential and games like this of this credibility are not being designed to work there best on this console we should ask for more i think games developers are more concerned with producing cheap ports and making money in the short term rather than making a game that costs more and earning more money in the long term. Developers must realise what elements of games they make is best in order to satify gamers completely. They must listen to gamers opions, gaming skill is all about freedom!!! the extent in control you have in any game and the amount of effort you have to put into a game. Technology will always advance to make gaming better and you must have faith in that! by making games to their very best, we push technology on to make gaming better because it will push technology itself to make a difference, therefore games can be better! My advice on this game is it is'nt for adult gamers ultimately or for experienced gamers but buy it if you like basic shoot em up gameplay and a good world war 2 experience other wise stick to medal of honour 2 as the sniper rifles and rifles are smooth and flawless and it supports a 32 player on-line multi-player, it is much better and you get the feel good factor out of playing it.
The complete breakdown:- rating out of 5 stars
1)graphics:- the graphics are good overall but look very dissimiliar to that of farcry with avengence (simple and cheap!) but graphics are not to important anyway if the game is programmed evenly and the gameplay is good. rating ***
2)playability:- As far as simple gameplay goes its good as point and shoot type gmae generally but could have been alot better this game is statifying enough generally the addition of the new features make it more want more but doesn't make the gameplay any better because the type of game engine used obviously cant be changed which is the problem in the first place rating **
3)Longevity:-loads of levels and some extra features add some addional warranty, to the game but unlockables are abit pointless because most of these should be compulsary in the game anyway auch as sniper rifles and other general weapons. The content of the game is very good overall and gives you the accent of surprise begging the questions (whats next?)and (what will that be like?) and keeps you playing but unfortunately nothing gets much better it just adds in abit more variety to the gaming experience but is still simply marred by the engine type and simple aiming and shooting becomes repetitive and dont offer any high level of skill for gamers who want more of a challege rating ****
sound:- the noise FX of the weapons is low and subtle from shooting -reloading, it gives a sense of less conviction and hardunuity to handling the weapons which makes the gameplay feel less hardcore but is still decent. The bad language in the campaign mode is a good feature and the music generally is good. rating ***
[+] plenty of campaign levels [+] some cool new features [+] online multi-player at last [+] enough variety [+] decent for more basic aiming & shooting [+] bad language is a cool addition [-] some unlockables are pointless [-] some sound FX are abit low key [-] only (1-8)on multi-player [-] gameplay suffers because of game engine type [-] the tilt aspect when you first manually shoot puts you off some shots [-] not that good for experienced or hardcore gamers [-] scoped rifles suffer because they are very unsteady [-] not enough detail in the available options to make the precise adjustments [-] doesn't give players much of a skill factor feel to it.
an average shoot 'em 'up that though has a lot of content and decent graphics is completely let down by type of game engine used in the handling of the weapons less skillful and less fun. truely a shame!

the best FPS experience on the wii so far November 13, 2008 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
.really good graphics and a very cinematic feel to the game. .controls are very good but not as good as metroid 3 or medal of honour heroes 2. . the best single player experience to date, and in my opinion better than metroid 3. .sound really good with great background music. .cooperative gameplay. It may not be the best but itsb fun if you have someone with you. . online multiplayer is lag free, 8 players. It may not have 32 players like medla of honour, but it looks much better and the maps are really good. Also, even though it only has deathmatch and team deathmatch and no capture the flag, it has ana awsome upgrade system. therefore, the more you play online, the higher your rank will get and you can get enw weapons and abilites. You can also, call for dogs and atrillary fire to help you when playing online, so it is really intense and enjoyable.
Therefore, as this game looks good, the single player campaign is just amazing! and the online gameplay is robust i would highly recommend this game to all wii fans and non-wii fans.
