Poor expansion but good value for money overall November 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been playing EQ2 more or less since its launch and its a great game, but sadly this expansion fall way below the high standards the game has set itself over the years, its very small compared to the last two expansions.
On the plus side all paid for content that SOE released over the years is included in the price and you cant fault that, for the money is a bargain.
So if you're new to the game pick this up and enjoy the delights the game has to offer, its just the latest expansion (the shadow odyssey)itself that fairly poor, but if its new you won't be seeing any of that content for awhile yet anyways.
Best yet November 17, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
EQ2 is the best fantasy MMO yet made.
WoW is great for children and casual 'console' style gamers, but EQ2 is far greater than it could ever hope to be.
Everquest 2, set that alarm clock to remind you to eat! October 26, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
NOTE: [Now before everyone rushes to complain at me about posting a review before the game is released, I would just like to point out that this game was released in 2004 and this is simply a compilation pack of the game and all it's expansions to date with few extra bits.]
Now onto the review:
VALUE FOR MONEY:
That's something I always loved about SOE (the publisher); every time they release an expansion, they include 30 days of extra online gametime along the full game and every expansion before it in the box for, in my honest opinion, a very generous price (currently at 16.99 pre-order as I'm writing this). Now that's not something I've ever seen Blizzard do with WoW (World of Warcraft), Everquest 2's biggest rival. WoW's expansions are normally very expensive on release considering they come without the original game, and have no gametime included (meaning you have to have to buy everything else separately in order to play). Not that I want to turn this into a WoW vs. Everquest argument, but just for the record; I have played countless MMO's and RPG games through my teens up until now and WoW has to be in my top most boring ever list.
GAMEPLAY & GENERAL POINTS:
Everquest 2 is a FANTASTIC game, it's actually my second favourite game of all time along side 'Baldur's Gate II' which I would also Highly recommend, although it's quite dated. I started playing back in 2004 on release day and loved EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF IT. It's truly the definition of immersion in games; I've found myself just wandering around for hours just looking at things, and talking to NPC's and other players haha. The community is full of mature helpful and extremely friendly people, and you hardly ever come across one of your classic "n00bs" and "trolls" who can make your experience in an MMO as a new player a misery. Almost every quest NPC, and with the extra voice packs you can download separately as an option (if you don't mind waiting a bit longer to play while they download) EVERY NPC, is voice acted. No more having to sit there and scour through pages of quest text to get an idea of what you're meant to be doing or what the story line is. No more, skipping the story because you got bored of reading another million words explaining how Mr. A. wants you to kill 12 rats for Mr. B. (to use a classic MMO example), when all you really want to do by that point is get on with it... As for the quests themselves there are, of course classic go here kill that quests, but generally, quests are deeper than that and have a point in the story. You actually feel as though your character is making a difference in the world and building a name for themselves. There is so much content that you don't even you have to play it as a multiplayer game if that's not your thing; although playing with other people is a lot more fulfilling as with all MMO games and it is the point in MMOs to be part of a community. Levelling in Everquest is much faster and more fun in groups, venturing into dungeons and killing huge heroic giants and mythical beasts with your friends online is what Everquest 2 is all about. I do recommend however, starting with a real life friend or two, it's always the best way when starting a new MMO I find, it gives you an instant sense of community along with someone to explore with, and of course some immediate competition ;)
GRAPHICS:
I was admittedly one of those people lucky enough to have a computer capable of running it at the time as it's graphics quality puts MMO's released today to utter shame; it rivals anything you've seen of Oblivion etc., and as far as MMO's are concerned, not one comes even close. You thought Age of Conan looked good for an MMORPG? Then you really are going to be open mouthed at the quality of visuals this game offers, and this was 2004 we are talking about as well. It may sound subjective, but I honestly don't know how game companies can get away with release such poor graphics online games in this day and age when there are gems like this out there. To run it on full settings I would say you need a high end 6 series Geforce graphics card preferably a 7 series or higher, I don't know what you would need ATIwise... I personally have an Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX, but you really won't need that kind of power, although every little helps.
Official requirements according the the FAQ are: Minimum: Windows 2000/XP, Pentium III 1 Ghz or greater, 512 MB RAM, DirectX 9 Compatible video card. Pixel shader and vertex shader compatible hardware with 64MB of texture memory, DirectSound compatible audio hardware, 56k Internet Connection, 16x DVD-ROM, 10GB Hard Drive Space.
Recommended: Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Pentium 4 2 Ghz or greater, 1 GB RAM, DirectX 9 Compatible video card. Pixel shader and vertex shader compatible hardware with 128MB of texture memory or greater, DirectSound compatible audio hardware, Broadband Internet Connection, 16x DVD-ROM, 10GB Hard Drive Space.
CONCLUSION:
This game is a true High fantasy experience; great fun, overflowing with content, constantly being updated, the best crafting system ever created, the best immersion in an online game, STUNNING visuals, and has the best community on an MMORPG I have ever experienced. This is THE best MMO out there, and well worth a try. Plus CHRISTOPHER LEE voice acts the main bad guy! You can't pass off Mr. Lee and his awesome voice of amazingness!
