The greatest battle of the new football season is not between any real world club but between the virtual giants of FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer. Konami's game has always been the favourite but last year FIFA closed the gap to such a degree that the title race has never been closer. This year's FIFA uses a completely new game engine, for the first time built specifically for the next gen consoles. But improved graphics and animation are only the half of it, with just as much focus going on the artificial intelligence thanks to the new "35 point decision engine". What this basically means is that every player on the pitch is fully aware of those around him and constantly thinking about tactics and position when not under your control. Other changes include better modelled physics for taking a shot on goal, which take into account everything from air pressure to the angle of your foot. You're also able to create your own special moves to replicate every possible trick from real life. There are also new game modes including Be A Pro which challenges you to play the role of a single player through a whole season or career. On top of this there are revamped online leagues to play a virtual season in the Premier League, Bundesliga, French League or Mexican 1st Division against real opponents. With 620 licensed teams, 30 offline leagues and 15,000 players as well FIFA might just have made enough new signings this year to put it over the top.

 Better than FIFA 07 - NO! November 18, 2008
I spend most of my time playing on manager made, so i will talk about this, Fifa had a problem two years ago, in that all you had to do was send a half decent scout out to the likes of Africa and Europe and he would come back with a young player with attributes in the high 70's or low 80's, and yes this problem is back.
why waste your hard earned cash (will come onto this in a moment) on players from other clubs when you can create a team of super players by simply sending out your scout - very unrealistic, half the fun of FIFA 07 was that it was really hit and miss when you brought in a scouted player, you really had to put in the time and effort in the hope the pitch time you gave them resulted in them developing into great players - no longer the case.....also what happened to the players rising through the youth ranks, that was a very nice touch - sadly no longer there.
back to the hard earned money, well it isn't is it! playing as Leeds at the moment, don't support them, but its always good to be a lower league side, aiming form the Premier league and being able to sell players without real life influencing you. but i was making at least 9 million a season, now i know FIFA 07 any team could go bankrupt after buying one star player but this is a little ridiculous isn't it!
is this game better than FIFA 07,in places but overall i would have to say NO!!

Love the game play, love the realistic kits and love the feel of it.
Hate the fact that when you get to a cup final it isn't played at Wembley but at your or your opponents home grounds WHY ? Wembley stadium is on there, use it. FA cup semi final, played at your home ground, whats that all about ?
Hate the fact that no matter how many times you upgrade your ground it looks exactly the same as the one you started with, WHY ?
Lets hope Fifa 09 irons out those niggles.

I have just played FIFA '08 for the Xbox and I was so furious by it that I came down to the computer to warn anyone else who may wish to play this game.
In one word, it is abysmal. It is the worst game in living history. The players in it, be it Ronaldhino or Matty Markson from Achely Town, all have the same terrible first touch, taking too long to control the ball and completely unable to take a first time shot or pass. The box will boast that it makes a thousand decisions a second, but they will include RUNNING AWAY from the player in possession, passing to one of the opposition midfielders whose just waiting for you, they will run into the most offside position available at the time and if you wait for them to come back, the CPU gets 12 players behind the ball. They then counter attack, easily passing your floundering players and waiting for the GK to punch it into his own net or throw it back to the striker in the first place.
The graphics are alright, the stadiums are impressive but the main gameplay is so utterly frustrating that you will just end up kicking your Xbox to bits in fury as you concede yet another offside decision and they score their one and only shot of the game to take the points. The players turn like a fleet of crippled boats as well and your AI players seem completely unable to make an interception while the opposition will make them from the whistle.
The Manager Mode is also utter infuriating as the players will lose all stamina after one match, requiring a eight match rest to get back to full strength. It's an interesting addition but also rather pointless. Machester United don't even start in the Champions League for example. It's a nightmare and there is no limit to how far I would go to avoid playing it again. Australia seems far enough.
I will play as Man Red in Pro Evo with delight as it is about a hundred thousand million billion times better all round.
And I did try it on all settings.
They were all bad.
Better than Pro Ev believe it or not! July 24, 2008
I have always been a Pro Ev guy, way back to the days when it wasn't even called Pro Ev! I had always preferred the playing system, gameplay and basically everything about it compared to Fifa. I always felt that Fifa was a stilted game which did not allow any fluency or imagination whatsoever. Basically, i thought that if you understood football you would prefer Pro Ev.
I recently purchased the new Pro Ev and as usual noticed a few changes here and there but nothing groundbreaking. The game seems to have got slower as each new version arrives. I then read the reviews on Fifa 08 and when i noticed the price i thought why not?
I have been very impressed. This is the closest you can get to real football on a video game in my opinion. The speed is perfect. The players play exactly like they do in real life. Ronaldo runs like Ronaldo, Scholes scores from the edge of the box but can't tackle and Tevez bullies every defender he comes across. The passing is great with emphasis on build up play interspersed with flashes of imagination that create openings. The shooting system is intuitive and lifelike and the whole game looks brilliant.
On line the game comes into its own. Playing other people who make the same errors as you really opens the game up and makes it great fun. At times when playing the computer, chances can be few and far between. If you want an arcade like football experience then don't buy this.
If you think you prefer Pro Ev but haven't played a Fifa in a while then my advice is get this, you won't be disapointed.
Why it's now better than Pro Evo July 4, 2008
Fifa 08 is a great game, much better on 360/ps3 than ps2. Amazing graphics, great gameplay as they made it a lot faster than last year where they were critised for slow gameplay esp passing, and those of you who played fifa 07 will know that the ball moved a lot in the air, on crosses and freekicks, unrealistically so, as if every player in the game was Ronaldo. This has been changed, so that freekicks are a lot more difficult to score, there is no 100% success formula, and the ball moves very little in the air, only ever curling slightly. The best bits are how realistic the game is; it's hard to score goals, and 3 or 4 in a game is rare. Also that the keepers are very good. You also cannot jsut run at defenders and slightly move the analog stick to brush them aside, you WILL get tackled, esp against the comp. Dribbling is difficult, but effective when you get it right, and only the very good dribblers can actually do tricks, e.g ronaldo, ronaldinho, messi...
Also people say that on Fifa you can't see the referee on the pitch, WHO CARES????
