5 out of 5 stars One of the best games you will ever play   November 19, 2008
The first guy reviewing this game pretty much covered all the bases. Likewise i bought fable 2 the same day and it hasnt got a look in since (nor has gears of war 2 for that matter). If you are a fan of the horror/shooter genre this could probably be the best game you have ever played. One minor gripe that some reviewers have over the game is the repetitiveness and similar levels however they miss the point of the game!! Its the claustraphobic, tense atmosphere of being in a mining craft in the middle of space that builds up the tension to unbearable levels and is what will make you jump/scream on numerous occasions!!! Play this with the lights off and surround sound up to the max for a truly awesome gaming experience!!!

5 out of 5 stars A fanntastic game!   November 19, 2008
Well... what can I say? I was hugely disappointed with Farcry 2 and returned it within a day and bought Dead Space. I'm glad I did. Imagine "Event Horizon" meets "Alien" with a measure of "Silent Hill" and you get some idea of the atmosphere and visceral excitement of this game. Wow... EA have certainly produced a classic here. I do hope they make a sequel to this.
The music is fabulous raising the tension throughout the game and adding to the movie feel.
The armoured suit is visually stunning and the graphics on a whole are top notch.
Gameplay is superb. You have choices continually... do you upgrade your weapons? Do you spend your credits on medikits? Do you buy better armoured suits? Ammunition and supplies aren't abundant and you'll be cursing as you miss a creatures leg and waste ammo. This game does make you aim and choose weapons wisely!
Be warned this game is not for kids! It made me jump repeatedly. Play it with the lights out and you'll have a great, scary experience.
This game is so clever. There is no hud. The Life bar is incorporated into the suit! You have the ability to use gravity and time... via simple controls. Sometimes you'll have to watch your air gauge in vacumns. Sometimes you fight in zero gee environments. this game isn't short either.
EA have done really well with this.

I like and rate this game up there with Fallout 3. In some aspects it's better!

Buy it you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Limb Cutting is fun!   November 17, 2008
I have been waiting for a while for Dead Space to come out. I had been watching alot of the xbox live content for the game i found it very enjoyable to watch. It is a typical survival horror which pays a nod to the resident evil series, especially number 4.

You see Survival Horror games do tend to be very similar to one another and dead space is no exception, however i believe that regarldess of that, you should speak as you find.

I would like to begin with the sheer beauty (if you can call ripping limbs off) of the game, visually stunning, atmospheric levels, awesome sound effects that do not sound cheesy and quite a terrifying experience. I like to play games that make me think, allow me time to slowly walk around and take in all the grandeur, whilst expecting the worst kind of badness to jump out and get me. If you are looking for a simple run around, pick stuff up and shoot, this is not the game for you. You need patience. Its like looking at a painting. Take your time.

It is not a very big game. 12 chapters on easy mode will on your first run through probably take you at least 5-7 hours. At leats it did with me and immediatly i became frustarted that i completed it that quickly. BUT this game is to be truly enjoyed on the impossible difficulty setting. This is why i love the game as you can creep around and take your time, planning your move. It also makes you appreciate the materials you have at hand. Use Kinese's you obliterate creatures with fuel cans. Ammo is used up more and weapons will definately need upgrading through out the course of the game, as will your armour. As i say these are the stalewarts of modern survial horror, upgrades, conserving ammo, terror. You get the picture.

Ultimatley this is a very good game, great infact. Wit the extra downloadable content such as suits and weapons, it does have a draw on you.

I do have a few criticism though. This may just be my experience of it but when you pause the game for a few minutes and then continue, it does have the tendancy to crash which can be frustrating. I have heard a few people say that it can be too dark in certain areas but thats the whole point! Your in space, very few lights! My final small jab at this great title is it slightly short and can be repetive when you have already visited an area. Certain chapters will bring you back to places you have already been, which is fine as you are an engineer running around the ship trying to repair it, but some areas could had of expanded out a little.

I recommend that you try this game, you will probably love it. Its best to play it when you have a few hours to yourself with no interuptions to truly get the best out of it. Oh and im still trying to find the PENG Treasure. its driving me crazy!

4 out of 5 stars Take 'em off one limb at a time.   November 17, 2008
If you love games like Res 4, Bioshock, Halo then you'll love this.

It seems to me the developers have taken care over this game and also user tested it well. It's smooth, it has a good mixture of thinking and shooting and you have the ability to upgrade weapons and sell items, like Res 4.

It's unashamedly linear, but doesn't make you feel constrained.

The dismemberment idea is a cracker, instead of just blasting away, as ammo needs to be conserved for the harder difficulty levels, you need to take out their limbs one at a time. It makes the game so much fun, as does the stomping and the gore.

A special mention needs to be made for the sound too. You'll be hearing the screaming in your sleep...

I wouldn't however say it's as scary as some people have made out, but it's atmospheric and tense. It's a little short, for which I'll take off a star, and the end boss could have been more tricky, but overall its a fantastic game and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Terrified in Dead Space   November 16, 2008
This is one of the best games I've played.

I like it when I just see a bit of a review, then walk into the shop on spec and think, oh yeah that's a game that should be good, I'll get that. Then when I get put the disc in the console everything just falls into place.

This game grabs you and shakes the living daylights out of you, quite literally. It's one of those games where you sit down and don't even think "which game should I play today?" Once it's in your console it'll probably stay there `til you've finished it. I've not yet completed it so I'm still engrossed and part of me doesn't even want to finish it anyway, if you know what I mean!

The weapons are great, the atmosphere's scary as a scary place in space and the pacing of the game is perfect, just as it should be to keep the tension at its height. The zero g and vacuum sequences are good, adding a great element to game play.

I just wish the achievements would reward me for playing on hard though. But having said that the challenge is enough to satisfy me, it just keeps you looking for more effective ways of, hopefully, disposing of the vile creatures populating your world and then stomping them one last time before you move on cos they scared you so much when they appeared.

The "save station" system used in the game would normally irritate me but it seems to fit perfectly here as the save stations are well placed. You just have to plan your approach to the carnage!

Sometime soon I should get around to playing Fallout 3 and Gears 2 properly but they just sit on the side for now...
