Amazon.co.uk Review
The United States is being invaded by the evil Chimera hordes, and only you can stop them. Set in an alternate universe in which World War II was cut short by an alien invasion, this exclusive PLAYSTATION 3 first-person shooter sees the battle moving in the 1950s from the recently liberated UK to a human resistance base in Iceland and finally onto America.
You play as Nathan Hale, a U.S. soldier immune to the Chimera’s mutagenic virus
Chimera spaceships appear over the America's coasts
Resistance is set in an alternative 1953, where World War II never happened
Fans originally accused the monster in the movie Cloverfield of being inspired by the Chimera

Although the single-player story mode features much more variety than the original, with many new weapons and Godzilla-sized enemy bosses, the game’s real appeal has always been the multiplayer. There’s now a whole separate story mode to play co-operatively with friends, either in split screen mode or with up to seven people online.

There were some complaints that the original played the first-person shooter formula a little too safe, but the unique new 60-person online versus mode should help to silence most critics for this sequel.

Key Features
  • Co-operative carnage: Join the battle with friends in an 8-player online co-operative story campaign.
  • It takes two: Weapons can be used in pairs, including the new “Marksman” semi-automatic rifle, a .44 Magnum revolver, and a chaingun that can double as a sentry gun.
  • Know your enemy:Fight more than a dozen new enemies in the Chimera horde, including the invisible Chameleon and underwater Fury creatures.
  • Massively multiplayer: Up to 60 people can play online in giant-sized battles in which gamers will be organized into smaller sqauds to focus on specific tasks to win the overall battle.
  • Team rewards: Do well in the multiplayer and earn battle points to boost your soldier’s strength, gain score multipliers, and acquire personal shields and other special bonus items.

5 out of 5 stars very hard   November 10, 2008

I went to the What Stuff exhibition in Excel london.
The Playstation stall had Resistance 2.
I have completed resistance fall of man ( first game)3 times.
I must say graphics on the second game are on par with COD4, except the grass was clumpy, not windswept and wispy like COD4. slighlty lower than cod4.And the sun reflection in the game is very real, better sun reflection than cod4.
The 3 levels they had in the show ( beta version) were really hard.
And the game play is still wonderful. the chimera are even uglier, if thats possible. level design linear. You can crouch and crawl in this game.
why did they make the game so hard.?
or is it for the show.

3 out of 5 stars A PS3 fps that's good!   November 10, 2008

Fps nothing more, nothing less - better then the average 1st game. Better graphics - probably on par with Call Of Duty 4. The game is still liner and the vehicle section are just plain average. The game bosses are great and absolutely huge. Probably a great game on PS3, but if experienced other fps on PC/360 this is just a good shooter. Great fun with high production and worthy title.

5 out of 5 stars Resistance 2 Rocks!   November 10, 2008

Resistance 2 (PS3)
This follows on from the popular PS3 launch title 'Resistance: Fall of Man (R:FOM)', and I think does it in some style. Having played the beta, I was fortunate enough to get a copy of this from the US which launched on 4th November.

The game offers three main areas: Campaign, Co-Operative & Competitive.
Campaign is the next installment of the offline story, picking up where the R:FOM finished. Insomniac the producers of the game wanted more wow factor for the sequel and I believe they have achieved it, you still have the enemies from the first game but some of the new `bosses' are very impressive. The PS3 handles the action with ease, even when tackling enemies as big as skyscrapers the action & play is very smooth. The story spans 10 major locations with numerous sections in each. Campaign mode uses checkpoints often (sometimes pointlessly) as a kind of autosave feature so that you don't have to do the whole level again.

Those familiar with the first game will know there are 3 difficulty ratings when playing in this mode. Completing the first unlocks `arcade mode' allowing you to play the game using a `number of lives principle' to see how far you get. Completing the hardest difficulty unlocks a 4th called Super Human.

Why you ask? Well with recent upgrades to the Playstation network you now have elements to achieve in the game called trophies. These elements you can share with other PS3 friends to show how far you have progressed through the game. Resistance 2 has approx. 39 trophies to collect with half awarded in campaign mode and half in the online modes, more on that in a minute. The game it's self also still uses ribbons and medals to acknowledge other achievements to. Insomniac have suggested that over 400 hours of game play would be required to collect all trophies, medals & ribbons!

Co-Operative and Competitive are the two online modes available with the game, the first `Co-Op' allows a team of up to 8 people to tackle random challenges in over 6 locations against the Chimera (Computer controlled). It's called Co-Op because a class system has been introduced that encourages you to work as a team, you can still go it alone but it makes these levels much, much harder. The three classes are Soldier, Medic & Special Ops. Although all three classes are armed and ready for action, using your primary class ability often earns you more experience than just killing the enemies. For example the soldier and his chain gun have a shield function that protects others around them, the soldier earns XP for shielding others. The Special Ops earn XP for keeping the soldiers shields & other player weapons topped up with ammo and the medic earns points for healing with a rather interesting gun!

Lastly, `Competitive', pitting teams of PS3 players against each other, again spanning over 6 maps of varying sizes supporting network games of up to 60 people! Having 60 people randomly running around could make for a hectic situation so for the larger games the two teams are further broken down into squads of five people. These squads can then have particular objectives to achieve. Competitive mode includes the usual suspects like Deathmatch & Team Deathmatch and has variations on `Capture the flag'.

The game as you'd expect supports clans [teams of PSN players that play together] and has an excellent in game community section that ties in with the re-launched www.myresistance.net. This provides detailed stats on you & your friends progress on the game as well as forums and other interesting stuff.

Criticisms:- Casual mode difficulty rating for experienced players in campaign mode is too easy, I'd recommend playing the campaign on difficult, although you do still need to revisit particular levels to find intel and complete challenges. The autosave/checkpoint in campaign mode can also frustrate sometimes as it can be too frequent , often saving when ammo is low, making further attempts at a section very difficult.

Overall:- value for money I think is excellent. Completing the campaign mode was very enjoyable. Network modes will please R:FOM and COD4 fans, with those modes the fun is pretty much endless.

Hi,

I have Resistance 1 which came with the PS3 last christmas and my husband and I dubiously put it on to play on the 27th December(after all it was a bundled game ) .....fast forward to the 29th December (and note that we don't play games for more than 2 or 3 hours normally ) and the games completed we've cancelled going out with friends and all we've stopped for is comfort breaks and food !! We can't wait for the release of resistance 2!! Although we'll be saving it up for the Christmas Holidays.

Roll on the release date !!
