Companies are always going on about the synergy between movies and video games, but all this really ever seems to mean is lots of dreadful movie tie-ins where all the money has been spent on celebrity voiceovers. Stranglehold is different though, in that it's essentially a sequel to 1992's classic movie Hard Boiled, made purely for video games. This time Inspector "Tequila" Yuen is unleashing his unorthodox policing methods on Russian crime bosses in both Hong Kong and Chicago. It stars the likeness of original lead Chow Yun Fat and has been developed with hands-on help from director John Woo - who it turns out does seem to know a thing or two about video games.

Of course video games have been ripping off John Woo for years, particularly his trademark slow motion shots of two-handed pistol action. As a result this initially seems dangerously similar to Max Payne et al., but the graphical power of the next generation consoles and PC ensures that this is a far more dynamic and interactive affair. Not only can you make use of a bullet time effect (call "Tequila time" here) to slow down time around you but almost all of the scenery can be used too, from sliding down banisters guns firing to scooting across the room on top of a waiter's trolley. The damage done as you go is truly impressive, with tiles shattering off the walls, chandeliers impaling bad guys as they fall and electric wires and water mains unhinging themselves everywhere. Making a mess has never been so much fun.

4 out of 5 stars Stranglehold (PS3)   March 30, 2010
BugattiVeyron_19 (Aberdeen, Scotland)
I have had this game for a while and I think this is fun but there are some problems. The online did not work very well and it was nearly impossible to connect with your friends. The story was a little bit too short even on the hardest difficulty and there was a gun which could be found in most boss fights which can kill them quickly and easily in about a round. Yet with all the problems I still found the game enjoyable.Overall I think this game is a laugh so you should buy it if you want to have a laugh but not if you want a game with awesome graphics and a stunning story.

3 out of 5 stars A great game when released but not so good for todays standards!   August 4, 2009

This was one of the first PS3 games I bought with my PS3. I knew this wouldnt be the best game out there but the selection of games were very limited after the PS3 was released.

I first played this game over a year ago and thought it was a pretty impressive game but for todays standards, its not that great.

Pros

1) Non-stop action from start to finish, with a great range of stunts and some decent special abilities.

2) Some of the levels can be really exciting, if not a bit repetitive.

3) The overall game price is reasonable. Ive seen this game in video game shops for around 4.99.

Cons

1) The plot is very predictable.

2) The game is waaaay too short - I completed it in a few hours.

3) The graphics arent amazing, or to the standard of the PS3, but what do you expect for such a cheap price!

4) The levels are really long. You can spend nearly an hour on one level. There also arent enough of them, making the game really short.

Overall, its an overage game, but its not a game that I would be impressed with if it were realeased today.

4 out of 5 stars Quality John Woo action?   May 25, 2009

This game follows the story of Tequila aka Chow Yun Fat taken from the film he starred in called Hard Boiled, as a police officer trying to find a gang of criminals and stop them. This takes you across stages that have fully destructible scenery and you can slow down time while firing at enemies to earn "stars" which help increase your "Bomb meter" which leads to some special moves. The first one you gain being able to heal yourself, then onto precision shot, then barrage, the fourth one I have not unlocked yet. When you slow down time by either pressing the R2 button or leaping onto a specific piece of scenery it is akin to the Max Payne game. You can slide down railings, leap sideways firing two guns, and jump backwards firing your shotgun or assault rifle. It is directed by John Woo, so the fight can get quite amusing and there are the doves on most areas that will fly off as you disturb them. You can have "stand offs" where you are surrounded by enemies and you have to dodge their slowed down bullets by dodging left or right while trying to shoot them. The bullets leave trails ala Matrix. Also, during the stages, you can use scenery to kill the baddies e.g. I was attacking three people lined up in an alley and I shot the signpost above them and it swung down and killed them. There are also propane tanks that you can ignite to kill people and the scenery takes a proper bashing, pillars will get chunks blown out of them, sometimes you need to shoot supports of platforms to get to higher ground, etc...
With regards to the special "Bomb" attacks, the precision one is quite funny as you can target any body part, and when you hit that area they respond appropriately, e.g. I shot a baddie in the eye and he grabs his eye screaming in a close up then dies. If you hit them in the leg, it may not kill them right off but they will hop holding the affected leg before trying to kill you again.
So all in all, this game is quite fun as a mindless kill fest while blowing away as much of the scenery as possible and maybe laughing madly while you do it. Other than this, there is really not much to the game. For the price it is at the moment I would recommend buying it if you want to have some fun with a shooter, the graphics are not great but then it is an earlier game on the PS3 and they are not too bad as you are focusing on killing people rather than taking time to look at the scenery. If you don't want to spend the £10 pounds on it, I would say rent it.
The game for me doesn't have any replay value, and once I have run through it I wont play it again I am sure. But as said, it has been an amusing little time waster for me. So I give it four stars due to it being quite funny with the precision shots, the total destructibility of the surroundings and that it has Chow Yun Fat as the voice of the character.

2 out of 5 stars Poor John Woo   January 15, 2009

Dear oh dear oh dear!! What can i say about the mess that is Stranglehold. Its been a few months since i played the FULL version (not like some people reviewing a demo!! lol) and completed it. Why has it taken me so long to put up a warning of this joke of a game .. probably because i felt dirty after playing it and spent countless hours trying to erase it from my memory!! lol
Positives of the game i guess are that its harmless fun, jump shoot, tequilla time jump, shoot .. repeat 30 billion times.
For any fan of John Woo movies don't expect to get a classy representation of Hard Boiled.. quite the opposite you end up getting a horrible mess similar to the many bad Hollywood ripoffs of John Woos masterpiece.
Negatives are many but the main ones for me .. poor graphics, shoddy testing of game cos there are rips and tears a plenty on screen, artificial intelligence is quite possibly the most awful i have seen in a game.
Perhaps i was spoiled by playing Kane and Lynch before this or even to go further back the classic Max Payne.
Just to clarify .... Buy this game at your own risk!! lol

3 out of 5 stars Childish Fun   March 3, 2008

This game has all sorts of problems. The graphics aren't special and Tequilas animations are laughable. The dumb thing is - and i know it sounds crazy - these make the game.

It's not even a difficult game. You leap, run, dive and bullet-time your way through Stranglehold and tread on a healthpack with everystep. But again, thats the charm. The game is so one dimensioned save for four special moves, including one where Tequila will more or less gun down everyone in the room without even having aim.

No innovation, barely mentionable story, one dimensional gameplay. Whats to like about this game you ask? Simple fun. You go from level to level just gunning down badguys in a few different ways, but i love it.

On a slighly more serious note the destructible environments did impress me.

Don't buy this game expecting the next big thing in Third Person Shooter innovation or graphics. Do expect a few good laughs and just a fun game to play. Stranglehold wasn't even on my radar of games to buy, but i'm glad i did.
