Top family entertainment! October 9, 2008 Before owning a PS3, Buzz! on PS2 never really appealed to me - after buying the main game, additional quizzes were a hefty 20 each - this would mean a spend of nearly 200 to have all quizzes available, not to mention the spaghetti of tangled wires from the controllers!
This PS3 version can be picked up for as little as 35 WITH the 4 wireless controllers if you shop around.
I would strongly suggest getting your PS3 online with this game as, not only does it (obviously) enable you to play other people even when no-one else in the household fancies a game, but, more importantly the online functionality provides you with (free) updates. To date this has meant another 4 playable characters (Napoleon, Mexican Wrestler, Female Vampire and Cavewoman) and additional outfits for the original characters too.
You can also download additional quizzes from the PSN site at prices between 3.50 to 4.99 - VERY reasonable compared to the previous PS2 additional discs costing up to 6 times that.
You can also write your own quizzes and upload them to the site so that anyone out there can also play your quiz! This is a great feature for niche interests.
Buzz! now utilises the PS3 Trophy system too, so that you can gain bragging rights against your friends as to who has unlocked the most in-game awards.
On the downside, it's a shame the quiz formats are a little stale after a while - point builder, pass the bomb, fastest finger, pie fight, high stakes and then the final round - same thing everytime. It would be nice if a download patch had some new formats for quiz rounds, but maybe that will come.
As for playing online with others, it's fastest finger, all that apply and then high stakes and then it's over after 18 questions.
Longevity is key though and we still dig Buzz! out for a game at least a couple of times a week and that's 2 months after buying it.
There's something there for all ages and the ability to create quizzes can even be used as a good and fun way to help your kids learn - whether it be utilised to teach spelling, history, etc - the possibilities are multi-faceted.
I never was a quiz enthusiast, but Buzz! seems to have converted me!
I would recommend it (wholeheartedly if you have your PS3 online).
Fantastic. October 3, 2008 Having great fun with this.. Alot of questions, with purchasable quiz packs on the store, and thousands of user created quizzes online, which you can play via the game.
There are some minor annoyances, but nothing not to warrant this a 5Star review.
Buzzed off! September 7, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Being a fan of the original Buzz games, I had really looked forward to this 'next generation' release. Sadly the game was a terrible let-down, and I feel obliged to write about it here.
Firstly the plus points:
1) The wireless buzzers are better for obvious reasons (no wires).
2) The graphics are better.
3) You can play online against people you don't know. This is fun for about 3 minutes.
Now the negative points:
1) No prizes at the end of the game - call me sad, but one of the best things about winning the original Buzz was the excitement of finding out what your prize was. A Yacht? A Racehorse? A set of towels? A Wooden Spoon? .... you could gloat to your friends for about 15 seconds about the wonderful thing you had 'won' - but now all you get is a scripted chat with Buzz himself, and it's the same every time. *yawn*
2) No Rose - again, call me sad - but Rose kinda broke the pace of the quiz up nicely ... if you had a new player, or were horribly drunk then you could listen to her running through the instructions - if everybody knew it all already you could get Buzz to tell her to shut-up .. which somehow never seemed to get old. Now we just get Buzz. *yawn*
3) Quiz length - in the previous games you could set the quiz length to suit the occasion. In this one you can't.
4) High score tables/awards - After several games of Buzz with friends it was always fun to look at the high score tables and do more gloating, or laughing at the awards for 'slowest' or 'most wrong answers' etc .... these awards are gone, and the high score tables just show online people you've never heard of.
5) Questions - Seemingly there are 5000 questions - but somehow they seem to duplicate more often, and there seem to be less audio and video clips than before.
6) Variety - Fun rounds like the duck shooting or 'True or False' or the horse race have been removed.
To cut a long story short - Buzz quiz TV gives you better graphics and wireless controllers at the expense of pretty much everything that made the previous Buzz games good. You can play online but it's always the same 3 rounds and if you don't know who you're playing you'd might as well be playing by yourself.
I'm amazed that the makers of Buzz could ruin it so badly :(
Massive let down July 31, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love the Buzz series of games, having bought the majority of them (except Sport and Movies - too 'niche' for my liking), so I was happy to see the next generation of Playstation getting its own version.
First we had to put up with the game being delayed again and again. This just pumped up the expectation, I mean, a version that can go online, has wireless buzzers and is stored on Blu-Ray (just think of all the content!) must be spectacular fun surely? Alas, no.
Playing against others online is dull. One buzzer per sofa? Boring. I want to play against the mates that I'm with as well as other people across the world (a la Mario Kart Wii). The MyBuzz feature is nice, but restrictive. 8 questions, all presented in one basic round. No option for choosing the type of round, the layout of the quiz.
The offline quiz itself seems to have retained some of the crap rounds of previous games, like Pie Fight and Pass the Bomb. High Stakes is good, but the rest of the rounds seem rather formulaic. Is it just me, or have they kept all the crap contestants too?
I'm crossing my fingers that we'll be able to download new contestants and new rounds in the future (for free as they should have been in there in the first place). The option to buy questions packs online is interesting, but considering the format in which they'll be presented, I don't think I'll bother.
In short, probably the worst of the Buzz series.
NETWORK PROBLEMS July 18, 2008 The Online (Sofa vs Sofa) Quiz is brilliant when it works and is so addictive. The Buzz Network cannot cope with the number of players at times. If the network goes down mid game it counts as a loss through no fault of your own and your Leaderboard Statistics are ruined.
I feel there are not enough round in the Offline mode ands some of the rounds in are just not long enough.
Overall the game is great fun Online and Offline and the wireless buzzers work brilliantly.
