Manufacturer's Description
The third game in the Fallout series, Fallout 3 is a singleplayer action role-playing game (RPG) set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. Combining the horrific insanity of the Cold War era theory of mutually assured destruction gone terribly wrong, with the kitschy naivety of American 1950s nuclear propaganda, Fallout 3 will satisfy both players familiar with the popular first two games in its series as well as those coming to the franchise for the first time.

The Story: Vault 101 - Jewel of the Wastes
For 200 years, Vault 101 , a fallout shelter, has faithfully served the surviving residents of Washington DC and its environs, now known as the Capital Wasteland. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you've ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth.

Key Features:

  • Limitless Freedom! - Take in the sights and sounds of the vast Capital Wasteland! See the great monuments of the United States lying in post-apocalyptic ruin! You make the choices that define you and change the world. Just keep an eye on your Rad Meter!
  • Experience S.P.E.C.I.A.L.! - Vault-Tec engineers bring you the latest in human ability simulation - the SPECIAL Character System! Utilizing new breakthroughs in points-based ability representation, SPECIAL affords unlimited customization of your character. Also included are dozens of unique skills and perks to choose from, each with a dazzling variety of effects!
  • Fantastic New Views! - The wizards at Vault-Tec have done it again! No longer constrained to just one view, experience the world from 1st or 3rd person perspective. Customize your view with the touch of a button!
  • The Power of Choice! - Feeling like a dastardly villain today, or a Good Samaritan? Pick a side or walk the line, as every situation can be dealt with in many different ways. Talk out your problems in a civilized fashion, or just flash your Plasma Rifle.
  • Blast 'Em Away With V.A.T.S.! -Even the odds in combat with the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System for your Pip-Boy Model 3000! V.A.T.S. allows you to pause time in combat, target specific body parts on your target, queue up attacks, and let Vault-Tec take out your aggression for you. Rain death and destruction in an all-new cinematic presentation featuring gory dismemberments and spectacular explosions.
  • Mind-Blowing Artificial Intelligence! - At Vault-Tec, we realize that the key to reviving civilization after a global nuclear war is people. Our best minds pooled their efforts to produce an advanced version of Radiant AI, America's First Choice in Human Interaction Simulation. Facial expressions, gestures, unique dialog, and lifelike behavior are brought together with stunning results by the latest in Vault-Tec technology.
  • Eye-Popping Prettiness! - Witness the harsh realities of nuclear fallout rendered like never before in modern super-deluxe HD graphics. From the barren Wasteland, to the danger-filled offices and metro tunnels of DC, to the hideous rotten flesh of a mutant's face.

5 out of 5 stars Fallout 3   November 30, 2008

An intensely enjoyable experience, Fallout 3 - along with Bethesda's other epic Oblivion - is one of my favourite PS3 games. It's important to get the Oblivion comparisons out of the way first because it is very similar, and if you enjoyed the sandbox, decision-based, RPG nature of Oblivion you'll find Fallout 3 to be both familiar and exciting. Like Oblivion Fallout 3 is a game you need to spend time on, its not one to be played in fits and starts but rather chunks, and you will go on to complete a quest and find several hours have passed! The world you live in is grey, brown, black, bleak - but what do you expect from a game set in a post-apocalytic nuclear wasteland? There is a small amount of greenery should any intrepid explorers search hard enough! Despite this limited palette you will soon find yourself sucked into the Capital Wasteland and meeting plenty of interesting characters, even gaining followers to aid you in your quest.

However despite my high rating Fallout3 is not infallible - for one the combat system is somewhat lacking - V.A.T.S. is amazing and innovative - but the standard combat is clunky and awkward, so you come to rely more on the V.A.T.S. system, similarly the graphics are occasionally substandard for a next-gen console, but on the whole the grim, decaying Washington D.C. is well realised. Finally, there is not as much playing time in Fallout 3 as in Oblivion. While there is still enough for your money's worth in a time where single-player campaigns on games are still far too short (Call of Duty anyone?) you might find yourself cheated if you go for the main quest first (because you are unable to play after its completion, so I strongly advise doing the side quests first to extend this game's life and improve your experience).

So on the balance of things I think Fallout 3 is not a perfect game but one well worth investing in if you enjoy a good RPG and willingly devoted hours of your life to Oblivion!

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing in Scope   November 28, 2008

My expectations for this game were based on Oblivion, which I thought was very good. The gameplay was extensive and the plot was engaging. Unfortunately, fallout 3 comes nowhere near the scope of this game. The main mission is over far too quickly and has a rather dissapointing climax, beyond which you cannot play. So you have to complete all secondary missions first, because once the main mission is comlete, you have no option to play on. If you're buying this game based on your experience of Oblivion, you may be in for a dissapointment.

Graphics are good but there's little variety beyond wasteland and subways. Character AI is pretty good too and there are often several ways of achieving your objective, but knowing what I know now,I'd probably spend my money elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars A comparative review for those who remain unsure!   November 24, 2008

I took this game back after 2 days as it wasn't what I expected at all, but all expectation are based on previous experiences and mine have been predominantly within a few closely related genres. After a few hours deliberation between holding out for COD5, Resistance 2 or being impatient and buying Fallout 3, Dead Space or FarCry 3 I went with Fallout 3. All the reviews were good, with various caveats, but the one point that I may have overlooked was the constant comparison to Oblivion in several of the reviews. I have never played this game and without prior knowledge and large amount of marketing showing off the graphics, I think I made my rushed decision based purely on aesthetics, not gameplay. Not that the game wasn't brilliant, but if you are expecting anything like Resistance FOM, COD, Black series then this game isn't going to rock your world. The closest game I have played to this was Uncharted: Drakes Fortune which has the puzzle elements combined with combat and shoot' em aspects, but it also had pace and didn't require talking to everyone you meet!!

No doubt this is a visually stunning game, but with different expectations and a confirmed love of FPS and anything with a bit of pace, I found this game slightly too far removed from what I was looking for. By the time I took the game back, COD5 was out and that has kept me very happy. Having played FarCry since as well, I can say this was more in line with my wants and needs.

5 out of 5 stars The best game I have ever played   November 24, 2008

Firstly, I have played oblivion and enjoyed it very much. Fallout 3 is far deeper, richer and more enjoyable in every way. I have not thought about oblivion once in connection with this game until reading a few of these reviews, the experience is so different. Not only is the sise of this game impressive in terms of the wastlands and 100's of rich subterranean and indoor environments, the wealth of characters and missions; but in the sense that every mission can be approached and played out in many different ways, with significantly different outcomes. The karma system is very interesting and makes Bioshocks stab at moral and emotional involvment seem utterly pathetic. The graphics vary in quality depending on what environment you are in , the insects are the most beutifully rendered and shaded creaters i have seen on any console or game, the ants in particular. I spent 15 minutes the other day just playing with a dead ant, marvelling at how amazing it looked and sounded, yes when you pick an ant up it's limbs knock together making noises that perfectly complement the weight and feel of the animal, playing through one mission i made freinds with the antagoniser (a mad woman who had befreinded the ants) so the ants didn't attack me, i was able to get very close to them and the animation of these creatures was stunning. i will never grow tired of shooting cockroaches with a laser pistol. The vats shooting system is satisying gory and fun. This game is also filled with adult humour, swearing and bizarre encounters of all kinds. Liam neeson does the voice acting of your dad! i mean this is epic. I'm 41 years old and have been playing video games since the paddle ping pong games of the seventies, this is the best game i have ever played.

4 out of 5 stars No Bethesda, it IS Oblivion with guns   November 20, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

After MGS4 came and went, Fallout 3 was my next most anticipated game of the year, and after finally getting time to play it, I find my feelings on the final product a bit mixed.

It is as open and free as you'll expect if you've played previous Bethesda classic Oblivion, as Fallout 3 is pretty much identical in how most of the game works, but with a delightfully fifties centric view of a possible post apocalyptic future where you're free to roam the lands around ruined Washington DC following a fairly interesting central quest that sees you cross paths with some very well realised creatures and denizens of the wastes and presents a very satisfying, if slightly repetitive world in which to live.

The game looks great for one. Better than Oblivion for sure, and the ability to blow pieces off your enemies is both amusing and very satisying to the combat, which would otherwise feel like a fairly generic FPS title to be honest.

Unlike Oblivion though, Fallout doesn't really have many terribly engaging side quests outside the main storyline. No 'Assassin's Guild' type affairs in here I'm afraid. Plus the whole game seems to be a lot shorter than Oblivion, as I finished it in around 40 odd hours, whereas Oblivion lasted closer to 80 when I played it.

It's definitely a great game, but not the Oblivion destroying monster we'd been led to expect. Still a must buy though.

As a side note on this PS3 version too, I've read much about it's supposed myriad technical problems, but when I played it, I encountered very few myself. The game crashed on me once, and there is a fair bit of tearing in the scenery in the game, but nothing nearly as severe as the media has been suggesting. See for yourself and judge is all I can say folks. Just don't miss Fallout 3.
