Manufacturer's Description Step onto the pitch and play professional football your way in FIFA 09. Experience the most authentic football simulation EA Sports has delivered as you live the fantasy of playing as a professional player and customise the game to suit your style and ability. Powered by the third generation of the EA Sports football engine, FIFA 09 features more than 250 core gameplay additions and enhancements that deliver the most responsive, intelligent and realistic action ever for the series. Enjoy turning defenders with more controlled dribbling and ball control, snapping off precision shots with improved first-time shooting mechanics and firing beautifully timed passes with greater accuracy, placing the ball exactly where you want it. With new player momentum physics the speed and weight of the player determines everything from the distance of a slide tackle and the power of a header to the severity of player collisions and the height of a player's jump. Plus, players now behave according to their physical attributes with larger, stronger players dominating collisions, battles for control of the ball, and position in challenges for two player headers.

First impressions... October 10, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm going to avoid doing the usual boring thing (such as make comparisons to Pro Evolution) & just give an opinion on Fifa 09 in isolation. Admittedly, I've only played the game for one evening since owning it, but I'm impressed, and this could be just what I'm after in a football game.
Presentation wise, Fifa 09 is superb, which all too often can be covering up a product lacking in substance. But this is not the case here... While this is a football simulation, EA havn't forgotten that it is still a video game and because of this, Fifa 09 is entertaining and not sterile. However you want to play, whether it be lumping it forward, or stroking the ball around like a brazilian master, the game allows you to do it, without feeling too restricted. I like to play attacking football, and thread defense splitting through balls into the path of onrushing strikers ...this game allows me to play that way, like no other.
Gameplay can feel slow at first, but get used to it and you'll appreciate the subtle dynamic bursts of speed, like when Gerrard runs onto a pass just right, and finds himself breaking away from midfield and into the box for a shooting opportunity.
This is a fantastic effort from EA, and to list the very few negatives I have would be very unfair, and ungrateful. (Remember there are people in the world worrying about where their next meal is coming from, let alone those playing a video game and moaning about why Ronaldo doesn't look he does in real life.) If your in the privileged position of being able to buy Fifa 09, I recommend you go and do just that, and enjoy it!
Fifa returns with the best in the series yet but is it the best football game ever? October 9, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Fifa 09 is simply a great football game. It builds up on the great gameplay of fifa 08. Now it's faster, slicker and a lot more enjoyable. Fifa is now a football simulation something it has aspired to for many years leaving the arcadey Pro Evo trailing in it's footsteps. Don't get me wrong Pro Evo is one of the greatest game series ever but it seems to have reached it's potential or is it just the pure genius of Fifa that makes it seem lacking ideas? If you are after a great game of football this is it. Truely groundbreaking
One time pro evo fan October 9, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been buying konami's game since the ISS days, but after last years dissapointment i was ready for change. So i downloaded both FIFA and Pro Evo demos on my PS3 and i must say Pro Evo is rubbish compared to FIFA,pro evo used to be the real football fans choice but this years game plays like an arcade game! FIFA on the other hand IS real football, you realy have to take your time and build moves up so when you score you realy feellike you have worked for it. And playing as Arsenal instead of north london is also a big plus point. The online mode is also top notch and the management mode is alot of fun aswell, soif here are any people undecided about which game to get,go for FIFA. This year its the real football fans choice.
The underlying problems are still here October 9, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm going to be honest here, 1-yes, I do buy pro evo 2-yes, I have played this game 3-no I'm not a fanboy of any game, I like to think objectively.
Right now that's cleared up, on to my issues.
First off, I don't know how I'm supposed to take a game seriously when I can score by hitting the corner flag (a glitch that was very amusing indeed) I mean how can a game be released where such obvious flaws can occur (not that a similar sort of event happened on fifa 08 where I shot high and wide before the commentator declaring "GOOOOOOOAL.") Another technical issue I found was the rather odd skin colours of certain ethnic players. It appears you're either black or white, nothing in between. Some players also have the wrong coloured hair which takes away the "slick realism" some people have tagged the game with.
Another major problem I've ALWAYS had with FIFA games and not just this one (which also happens to disprove the "slick realism" tag) is the delay from when I press a button to when the player actually does the action. Why is it, that the player always goes into auto pilot and decides to take one extra step before doing the action I've pressed. It's frustrating, makes me feel like I haven't actually pressed the button and it makes the game lose any sort of flow or enjoyment. This for me is the epitome of why I don't like these games any more, sure it was fine as a youngster, when there was little competition and I enjoyed the novelty feeling of playing as Dennis Bergkamp, but that novelty soon wears off.
I'm sick of people playing this game when it has such basic flaws that could easily be sorted out.
And now for the saving grace before I plunge the final nail into the FIFA coffin (which most people argue doesn't exist.) I will admit, some areas have been sorted out, for instance unlike fifa 03, 04, 05, 06 and 07 (that's a fair few) the two latest installments aren't so easy to curl one in the top corner from about 45 yards away with your goalkeeper. You need some tactics to score, FINALLY. As well as this I also enjoy the loading screen where you can take on a kepper 1 on 1 (which is why the fun rating is 3)
HOWEVER, I can easily argue that you never should be able to score from 45 yards with such ease in the first place! And if the answer to "what's your favourite aspect of fifa 09" is the loading screen, then that implies the game has confidence issues and tries to divert you with a fancy loading screen where you can take on the keeper.
All in all these games have improved I'll admit that. But to say they're the best football game around, or the best of all time is ridiculous. There are such school boy errors and major design flaws and even the fact that the players are all licensed is undermined by the shoddy representations of the not quite so big names. And why is the become a pro feature so hyped up when there's one on Pro Evo 09? And why is this so hyped up as being better when the games have become closer together and have both copied each other. (Main example, the advantage sign, handballs and being able to control one player on your team.) For me, it's just way too sluggish and isn't good to play. If you're watching, I suppose it would seem "slick and realistic". But I think it's much better to play a game with ones hands, than their eyes.
Potentially Great, But Big Let Down October 9, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Before I start I used to be a big fifa man, then i turned to pro, then fifa then pro, im honest about the games and not on either side of the fence so my review is impartial, I am judging the game on its own, not in comparison to pro unlike others. I got the game, within 2 hours i had put it on eBay, its just too slow, I don't get why people think its great, the graphics as well are worse than pro although not comparing, don't get why people keep saying they are great, but the real let down is the gameplay, its so slow, weird angles and so simple, the computer does everything for you. The be a pro mode, looked good for a bit, but so quickly turned dull as it is too slow. And also it is so unrealistic, the ball doesn't stick too your feet like a sponge in real life, where as on fifa 09 this is the norm. Everyone has their own opinion but I can't stand this, if you are looking for a good football game go for pes 2009 this year at least, if you are looking for a good game to get addicted to play call of duty 4.
