Product Description
After a valiant struggle to stop the Chimera invasion in Europe, mankind must make its last stand on the shores of the United States.

Amazon.co.uk Review
The United States is being invaded by the evil Chimera hordes, and only you can stop them. Set in an alternate universe in which World War II was cut short by an alien invasion, this exclusive PLAYSTATION 3 first-person shooter sees the battle moving in the 1950s from the recently liberated UK to a human resistance base in Iceland and finally onto America.
You play as Nathan Hale, a U.S. soldier immune to the Chimera’s mutagenic virus
Chimera spaceships appear over the America's coasts
Resistance is set in an alternative 1953, where World War II never happened
Fans originally accused the monster in the movie Cloverfield of being inspired by the Chimera

Although the single-player story mode features much more variety than the original, with many new weapons and Godzilla-sized enemy bosses, the game’s real appeal has always been the multiplayer. There’s now a whole separate story mode to play co-operatively with friends, either in split screen mode or with up to seven people online.

There were some complaints that the original played the first-person shooter formula a little too safe, but the unique new 60-person online versus mode should help to silence most critics for this sequel.

Key Features
  • Co-operative carnage: Join the battle with friends in an 8-player online co-operative story campaign.
  • It takes two: Weapons can be used in pairs, including the new “Marksman” semi-automatic rifle, a .44 Magnum revolver, and a chaingun that can double as a sentry gun.
  • Know your enemy:Fight more than a dozen new enemies in the Chimera horde, including the invisible Chameleon and underwater Fury creatures.
  • Massively multiplayer: Up to 60 people can play online in giant-sized battles in which gamers will be organized into smaller sqauds to focus on specific tasks to win the overall battle.
  • Team rewards: Do well in the multiplayer and earn battle points to boost your soldier’s strength, gain score multipliers, and acquire personal shields and other special bonus items.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, leap ahead of original   December 3, 2008

This year Incomniac have taken the concept of Fall of Man and completly revised the game into something brilliant. The original was an ok game, it lacked much atmosphere and the game felt rushed in places. However the much anticipated sequel is better in everyway. You get bigger maps, bigger enemies, bigger multiplayer, and a lot better graphics. No more do you have a silent Hale with the use of a Narrator, and gone is the 1950s England. For Resistance 2 Nathan Hale has a voice, and this time he is in classic 1950s America. This game feels like the original was simply buildup for the sequel. Yes the campaign mode may not be the best on offer, but this is made up by the extensive co-op and 60 man multiplayer.

If you want an excellent shooter, or you just want a game that you can have a lot of fun with, then Resistance 2 should not disappoint. And you do not need any knowledge of the original to play this game!

2 out of 5 stars Probably not worth a look until it's in the bargain bin...   December 3, 2008

Resistance 2 is not a bad game, it is, sadly not a good game either.

Resistance 2 shines quite well initially, picking up directly from where the previous game drops you off you end up in a chaotic Chimera attack on the base you were being taken to have been captured by a black-ops squad staggering around in the English countryside. The second level too, set 2 years later, suggest some interesting promise as you go about the evacuation of the base which houses your new unit, unfortunatly it is pretty much down hill from here.

During the second level you encounter two scientists in the water screaming for help, so I jumped in, fully expecting this to be a scripted event, I was shredded in seconds by an unseen foe, as I sank below the water a bloody mess Resistance happily told me that Furies are deadly in the water. Apparently I had to die to find this out, and the pattern continues through-out the rest of the game, very often giving you little, or no advanced warning to how to do deal with this monster or that without a death, or seven.

Resistance 2's difficulty curve is not based upon monster intelligence, clever level design, epic set pieces or challenging situations it can be boiled down several heavily outdated first person shooter design principles:
1 - The player is clearly the highest threat even when at the back of the crowd of fellow soldiers and not shooting, run for him and try to kill him even if his teammates provide a more obvious threat. E.g. In one level you are surrounded by a large number of squad mates defending an AA gun, there must be 30 Chimera, they are all quite happy to shoot at your squad mates until you poke your head out, and even before you have fired a shot they have all turned to shoot at you.
2 - There is nothing more challenging than creating numerous monsters that can kill him in 1 hit, and give him little or no warning about their existance. E.g. There are cloaked monsters that appear a few levels in, you see him once where he kills a soldier, if you don't react fast enough to their appearance you die, no second chances, instant death.
3 - Create a sub-set of monsters that have a specific weakness that is incredibly hard to exploit because of point 1. E.g. I was stood minding my own business behind 10 squad mates and had 6 monsters run past them, down a corridor to shoot me in the face even though I had done absolutely nothing to tell them I was there or antagonize them, which is considerably different to the rest of my squad mates who were happily blasting away as I became their little pin cushion.

1,2 and 3 do not make an enjoyable experience, certainly they make it more challenging but only by at the same time raising your frustration levels to fever-pitch in the process, when examing recent block-busters like Halo and Call of Duty 4 monster archetypes where more balanced, certainly there were invisible 1 hit kill monsters in Halo, but they were easier to spot, and quite frankly couldn't run nearly as fast as the invisible Chimera. Also they squad play right, Master Chief and the main characters you played in CoD 4 didn't have a magic bullseye painted on them, you gained it pretty quickly, but when you kick a door in and shoot dead 4 enemies his friends are going to quickly look to target you. This cannot be said of Resistance 2 where every monster knows where you are and prioritises you over everyone else.

The level design was interesting, but not particularly inspired, in a true classic you are very often led around by the nose, but you don't always realise it, not so much in this little game, you find yourself butting into dead-ends and looking for your exit from this current room fairly regularly, if you're going to make each level a glorified tunnel, then at least make it feel to the player that they are making the choices as to where to go by enticing them to follow the path you want them to select, there are plenty of examples of games released over the past 15 years which succeed in doing this.

Overall I am just disappointed by this title, it is filled with promise, but outdated and lazy game development techniques, lack luster level design, dull weapons lead to a pretty mediocre game. Frankly I'd suggest you purchase Call of Duty 5 over this title if you're looking for a new FPS for your PS3, unless of course you were a huge fan of the first one, because the very least you could say for this title is that it is a better game than that one.

5 out of 5 stars A great sequel and fantastic game!   December 3, 2008
Ive just completed the single player Story to this game and i can say nothing bad about it! To that extent im actually starting all over again on aharder difficuly i enjoyed it that much!

The game is a fantastic sequel to the original resistance: fall of man and early PS3 title that brought to life the story of Nathan Hale! Resistance 2 has been created as a follow on, its story is well written the game play is smooth and easy controls make it great fun to play!

The co-operative and online multiplayers rival that of call of duty 4 and are great fun in any mode. They can hold an excessive amount of players on larger maps which makes it more challenging and alot more fun if theres more of you online!

In esscence this game isnt some cheap remake, its well thought out, great fun and with addictive online gaming its great value too! Highly enjoyable from start to finish!

4 out of 5 stars An exemplary sequel   December 2, 2008

The original was a crushingly average launch title, so little was expected from this seemingly rushed follow up. Yet Resistance 2 is superb, and one of the best shooters of 2008.

The opening begins fairly sombre, with protagonist Nathan Hale picked up by a mysterious squad, who intend to run tests on the virus he is infected with. Before they get chance, their craft is shot down by a Goliath. The opening level is a glorified training section, but theres a huge sense of urgency as this Chimeran vehicle towers overhead. The linearity is also well disguised, creating the illusion of open spaces well.
From this opening section onwards, Resistance 2 is a massive graphical achievement. The traditional greys and browns no longer dominate; instead the environments are brimming with colour. This gives Resistance 2 much more character and individuality. Nice graphical effects like motion blur when running and reloading maintain this presentation throughout. Cut scenes are also much improved, linking the story better than the static images of Fall of Man.

The weapon set has also been tweaked, and Chimera now drop after a few shots. As a result, the combat feels much more visceral. Weapons like the Auger rifle (which can shoot through walls and aolid surfaces), and the Marksman (a sniper assault rifle) create new tactics and approaches to combat. Consequently, Resistance 2 plays like no other shooter.

Single player is well paced, and offers lots of variety. Almost every level throws up a new enemy, weapon or gameplay element to keep things fresh. Flooded sections become deathtraps for waterborne Chimera; advancing through a forest is made unbearably tense when cloaked enemies ambush; and the first time a spinner hatches is a horrifying sight. Boss battles are also memorable and truly immense.

There are a few bad points. Enemy AI is weak compared to other sections of the game. The game is also prone to freezes and glitches; my save file corrupted at one point, which has never happened before. The single-player campaign also ends abruptly, leaving questions unanswered and setting up the inevitable sequel.

Like most follow ups, bigger really is better with Resistance 2.
The universe has been expanded, and every element of the original improved. Even multi-player skirmishes have been upped from 32 players to 60, and is likely to dominate the PlayStation Network for a very long time.

Insomniac have outdone themselves here. The pressure is now on Killzone 2.

2 out of 5 stars No full campaign co-op mode has ruined it.   December 1, 2008

I have been waiting for months for this to come out so I could whittle away a few hours with friends in full campaign co-op mode, a la Resistance FOM. Lo and behold there's no option for this, just the usual online offering which of course requires more than one PS3 if you want to play with a friend. They try to throw in an offline 2 man co-op which is basically a set of 8 maps to complete but not the full campaign. Don't waste your money on the game if this is your main reason for buying it (which mine was). Gutted.
