Championship-ish manager... September 2, 2007 When I first got this game I thought "Brilliant, a manager game I can play whilst in the car"... I've always been a fan of this kind of game but I've never been able to crack how to do them so I would always lose matches 5-0 or more...
However, after much tampering and tinknering with tactics and formations, I rectified that and ultimately managed back to back successive promotions with halifax, going from the conference to the premiership in 5 seasons and finishing 2nd in my final season...
That is where the mixed feelings come... Although delighted that I managed such an achievement from a past laden with failings on such games, there was a slightly disappointing fact that I knew how to beat the game and it lost a bit of it's shine...
Not to worry though! Just start a new game and try again! Or try one of the interesting campaign's that have been included... They are a good idea, one which I completed required me to help shrewsbury avoid relegation... And I got promotion... But the joy was short lived as these modes only last 1 season so everything you made is lost...
I guess that's another flaw with career mode... The game is very lengthy (think you get 10-15 seasons or something), but the fact it ends at that point is slightly disappointing... As the game gets further through, it reacts slower and my copy on occasions either crashed or matches were played where the ball sat where it was and nobody moved or touched the ball... That was the most frustrating...
Another thing that might frustrate a few people is the "ask the board" option... I've only ever had successes on this when I've asked for an expansion to the youth system... Otherwise, it's a no-hope... If you're managing a team with a very low transfer budget yet a very full bank account, the board tend to have a habit of complaining of the wage total so unless you can operate a team with 17 players and a shoestring budget, then you'll struggle with the low leaguer's...
Overall, it is a good game for a while, but it is very lengthy and long-winded at points so not really a "lunch-break" kind of game... Whilst winning titles and signing big name players always gives a buzz, it's short lived when you find it wasn't such a good signing after all or you crash out of a tournament...
Cheap thrills, give it a go, but i'd either play football manager or wait for a few more CM's to come out...
A good game for a time June 11, 2007 I think this is a very good game. There are a number of leagues that can be played all round the world and there are also various mission type scenarios such as avoiding relegation, gaining promotion and winning a European trophy. So there is certainly a good amount of variety.
The game allows you to see the game played out on a 2D pitch which I liked. Admittedly on the highest speed setting (which I always used), it was a little behind the commentary, but that did not matter to me as it made me feel more immersed in the action than just reading text, and allowed me to get an idea of what was going on.
I did not find the results to be that unfair. I started off with Berwick from the Scottish 3rd Division and after a few purchases (usually from Bulgarian teams), I found myself winning quite regularly and moving up the leagues. In general the scores in games seem quite fair. On the other hand I tend to find the shots on and off target to be far greater than would normally exist in a real football match. Like in real football some results can be frustrating. Occasionally you lose to lesser teams or have a surprising win against a better team. But that often happens in real football.
The general interface is very good and it is very easy to navigate around the PSP to the various areas. I believe the level of detail has been reduced, but I welcome that as I did not want to be too bogged down in detailed training programs. However, there is still a fair to do in terms of management and it is up to the player how much detail you want.
There is one negative point for those who may play with Scottish teams in the SPL. The game does not portray the SPL league split properly. In the real SPL, the teams take the points before the league split into the final games of the season. This does not happen in this game. Instead, when the league splits, all the teams' point are put to zero. This means that a team that was say seventh in the league and mathematically out of the relegation zone at the time of the split could end up being relegated if they have a bad final few games. Likewise, a team which is sixth in the league and cannot mathematically win the league at the time of the split could end up winning the league if they have a good end season. This is obviously unrealistic and annoying, but wont affect you if you are not specifically planning on playing in the SPL.
In general I found this to be a good football management game and it is realistic enough.
Super game! March 18, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is without doubt the best football management game on the PSP ever! It is almost perfect in every way. The controls and graphics are simple but this means you can spend more time playing. The matches are good, especially the 2D match engine and the results are often realistic. There is a huge database of players from many countries and part of the challenge of this game is to find the best foreign players!
As soon as I got this game, I started it up and I couldnt put it down for months, it is so addictive.
The only thing that I could find wrong with this game is that you can only play 10 seasons. However, there is a good reason for this as it stops the game getting like Football Manager Handheld with the world-class youth players everywhere. Absolutely cracking game, easily the best game I own on the PSP.

If you get excited at the prospect of football matches that end 0-0, then this is the game for you. Otherwise, buy football manager handheld instead.
Not perfect but much more depth than FM May 12, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have been playing CM PSP for several months now and despite some very frustrating niggles I have to say the game is involving, challenging and a fantastic buy. Some people seem to find it hard to take that you don't pick the game up and be instantly successful even though they chose chelsea and bought Thierry Henry. I for one would be disappointed if you could. And yes, it is hard to get goals until you start to adapt the set up of your team, but give it time and the many subtleties of strategy, player form and tactics will be revealed to you.
The more recently launched (and hyped) FM Handheld game may benefit from brand loyalty over CM but how anyone could rave about such a superficial effort beats me. No proper transfers, no player interaction, no 2D match engine and worst of all no option to create your own killer formation. All these things and more are available on CM PSP yet the makers of FM Handheld make out that its not technically possible to do all this on the psp! Shame on you. For me, if you are into footy management sims you want something that is immersive and has depth and variety, not something overtly simplistic and cut down. Just because its on the PSP doesn't mean it will only be played in 5 minute bursts!
I must say CM does have some big faults: you can sell ordinary players for vast sums (amusing for a while but not realistic); the game sometimes goes bonkers after a few seasons and invents default formations with several goalkeepers etc! None of these has been particularly bad but the worst thing was when I played my main rivals in the title decider and the game changed the opposition to another team and then, when I'd won the match 2-0, reported the result as a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the team I was meant to be playing in the first place! VERY annoying, but until something comes along that gives me all this depth without the bugs, Im sticking with CM PSP.
