After the First Hour or so it's just boring (plus dodgy widescreen)... November 17, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
OK first, will have to address the DRM. I don't have an issue with it and not buying the game just because of that only really hurts you as you don't get to try the latest software. I don't think this DRM will cause issues - both FarCry 2 and Crysis Warhead have been fine for me. I think EA have done a better job though as with Crysis Warhead once loaded you don't need the DVD again which I like lots - I hate having to put it in the drive to play. Why couldn't UBI have done the same thing as they are using the same system - you still need to insert the DVD when wanting to play.
There are other reasons not to buy this game however...
Firstly I played for a an hour or 2 a couple of times and both times felt a bit ill (nauseous) afterwards - I thought it was just something else - I have played first person shooters lots and at LAN parties for 12 hours or so without issues before. While looking on a forum for something else I found that the widescreen on this is a cropped 4:3 ratio so you appear to be "closer" to things and that it is a little unnatural - other people had experienced that same issue (though not everyone). Anyway I loaded a widescreen hack someone wrote and I was better after that (although first patch broke that) so had to reinstall and not load the patch.
The game however is just boring I guess - I am not sure why the so called review sites gave it such good reviews - maybe they played only briefly and then on to Fallout 3! You just seem to drive / walk / swim / boat around clearing out checkpoints on the way you have already cleared out numerous times before, to find that each task is much the same as the others.
I wanted to play more stealth after Crysis Warhead but until you get the guns etc to do it you can't. Everyone in the whole place wants to kill you - don't wait and see or try creeping up on them, they do! Cleared out checkpoints respawn as soon as you can drive down the road and turn round to come back and see. I have lost track of what I am even meant to do and how to go about finding out about it.
It is semi real life but then there are suitcases with diamonds in them just laying about. If I can carry a AK-47 and an RPG launcher, why can't I carry a AK-47 and a sniper rifle if I would rather play that way (which I do and found that very annoying)? Weight and size would be about the same.
What are the save points all about - as I can Save when I want from the menu (or quick save) I can't see the point in those.
Don't know whether to sell the game or just use it as an in between others type one. Perhaps I'll try multiplayer and see if it's better then.
Overall I guess it was a pity as the landscape and wander where you want are nice and it does look good on my system (E8400 3Ghz / 8800GT).
I am guessing this will be a game that will be reduced in price quite quickly.
UBI for me are becoming a publisher to avoid - Starforce DRM in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory killed my DVD drive; Rainbow Six 3; Raven Shield was great but lack of being able to join a server by IP Address meant we couldn't play over a VPN and now FarCry 2 with bad widescreen support on a game that could have been so much better.
Hope that helps.
What a shame November 16, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
After playing this game for 22 hours...
Summary: Awful ending.
Longer Review: I enjoyed some aspects of the game overall including weapons, upgrades, buddies and so on. However, driving to the complete opposite side of the map for so many missions is just plain madness. The game is good but it is let down by this primary issue. Such a shame really as many other aspects are fun.
I'd like to get this for christmas but... November 15, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
... i dont think i'll bother. I feel that it would be a mistake to support a game that adopts such a nanny-like control over how I can use it. Also, I usually sell games on so as to fund my next purchase - again I would not be able to do this so it becomes dead cost.
Far Cry...More Like Out Cry... November 15, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Despite reservations about DRM and SecureROM, the initial hype for this game looked promising so I decided to compromise my principles and buy FC2.
Oh dear... The initial premise was very good with the sandbox of GTA crossed with the graphics and gameplay of Crysis but the apple, as they say, has fallen rather too far from the tree. Visually the game is impressive and the first one I've installed on Vista to utilise DirectX 10. However as others have commented, despite the 50 sq km map and free roaming gameplay the reality is very different. Far from being the open plains and desert of North Africa the roads are bounded by cliffs and ridges which you cannot climb, so apart from the odd pass or shortcut you are forced to use the roads.
Your character takes on various missions in order to progress towards your ultimate task of eliminating the main protagonist - called The Jackal. Some of these are primary, i.e. progress towards the end game while others are secondary and serve to build reputation with other NPC's, unlock weapons or increase reputation etc. Oh and doing errands to buy the dreaded malaria pills.
All well and good if this was actually of some use but there are just too many obstacles in the gameplay. The Checkpoints have already been mentioned and are a royal PITA. They are populated whether you are doing a mission or just travelling around the map. Without fail they will fire on you and even in a vehicle you cannot out-run the pursuit if you try and evade. This means you expend most of your ammo and health before even arriving at the primary target. The respawning as mentioned in other reviews is ridiculous - maybe justify on the extreme level or after a decent amount of time has passed in game but certainly not on medium difficulty after clearing the opposition. At no time is it explained why each and every checkpoint hates you. Lazy programming to pad the game out, perhaps?
Once you arrive at the target you are the lone soldier tasked with taking down superior firepower. Although you cultivate friendships with other NPC's, thus far I have not been able to recruit any of them to assist on a mission. Not surprisingly, the opposition gets you dead bang each time even when under cover and there is no logical line of sight. Oh and the weapon failure rate... This is quite ludicrous, even an African terrorist or a mercenary is going to keep their weapns in working order. A gun isn't going to rust in less than a day in the dry African climate. Sorry Ubisoft, but my idea of gaming fun does not consist of taking incoming fire from nine invisible opponents to have my gun jam or even worse snap in my hand and suffer a malaria attack at the same time. By all means introduce strategy or lateral thinking, maybe even some puzzle solving but FC2 as it stands is just plain frustrating.
Without the "Quicksave" feature, the game would be completely unplayable.
Frankly I suspect the DRM has been applied to this title simply because it's so crummy, the publishers knew within days of release many annoyed players would have given up and put their copies up for sale on Ebay or Amazon Marketplace. I'm now playing COD WOW instead and yes you still get killed but the whiole FPS combat experience is just so much better than this piece of rubbish from Ubisoft.
Avoid.
Fallout 3 tops this by a mountain! November 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pros
Flamer is good, setting fire to things is very fun ...for an hour!
Cons
Graphics really are average for todays standards apart from begininng in car was ok. Map was a bit wtf >??!! ........
Anyhow got bored after 4 hours killing the same enemies over and.... and started playing fallout 3 which installed like a dream and I have not put down since!(map in fallout is still a bit odd!)
This is more of a recommendation than a review I just got very bored very quickly! Don't even waste bandwidth downloading it, however it will prob work better and not have drm issues!
