5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Spanking!   October 15, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Right, before this I last played MGS2 Son's of Lib (Big Shell) and for reasons largley due to the cut scenes I avoided MGS Substence and then number 3 on PS2. So I had reservations about MGS4 this time around and also had some gaps in the story.

Focussing first on the game itself, I was hugely impressed at the AI of PMC's and militia forces. Each act has set choreography whereby the ongoing battle between the two takes place. This essentially means that you can take a back seat and admire the fantastic action of the game that you would normally see in a decent movie. You can move quietly around the maps watching the battles unfold or on the other hand, you can engage either side in your own gunfights and pick off individuals from distance with sniper fire.

Of course, should you take this option, you will create Alert status and the enemy will engage, sometimes in vast and infinite numbers. Some people may not know that you can gain the admiration of the militia troops by killing PMC's and by giving them your supplies. This in affect gains their support and means that there is one less army to shoot at you; and there are several disguises that you can gain only through fighting alongside the militia. My biggest pleasure of this game is that you can go through it basically killing everything in your path, including taking down tanks and aircraft (assuming you have the correct weapons); or you can attempt a wide range of differing ''stealth versions'' (zero alerts, zero kills etc) in order to gain emblems. Some of these of course do require several playthroughs dependant of the criteria attached to each emblem. In addition to these, there are a number of special weapons and camo masks / suits that you can unlock by completing various tasks which I wont spoil (best you get a decent walkthrough)but I will mention the ''Predator'' style invisible Camo suit. Very Very Cool.

SO Ive beaten the game once using a every gun and explosive I could get my hands on. Sure I won some emblems but I have missed loads, and since I killed everything, I didnt get any of the special gear that I know is there for the taking. In doing so, I picked up almost all the weaponry you can get and modified most of it. You can buy weapons to but you need DP's for this, which you get from racking up kills and collecting weapons. Once completed you can save the game and carry everything forward to the next playthrough soooo I will play the game again with the emphasis on Stealth and attempt to get the stuff I missed.

Gameplay wise, I would reccommend any good gamer have a look at the controls options, as I found the default settings quite slow and clunky. I found the levels extremely well laid out with a wide choice of paths to follow. Some of which are well hidden but they are there and can either assist the stealth attempt or enhance the action.

Graphically the game is a masterpiece and far outshines anything else I have seen including COD4. The attention to detail is extreme and is usually something I bitch about. One example of this is that the cutscenes are setting specific so if you are carrying a grenade launcher and wearing a Camo mask - thats whats in the cutscene. Everything looks fanatsic and the only thing I could find to bitch about visially was that when Snake drops off a ledge / box etc, his gun dissapears from his hands. Thats it and very trivial I know.

In game movies, well they also look fantastic but there are alot of them and some are very long. I didnt mind so much as I did miss some of the story from prior games, and found it quite interesting to follow, even if some of the dialogue is typical Manga stuff - deep and slow paced. That said, now I beat the game, I dont have to watch them again so the second playthrough will be far more enjoyable and quicker as they are largely skippable save the last few.

If you want to be able to play a game for half hour or so, this isnt really for you. You need alot of time, not just to watch the movies but to understand the complexity of the huge variations of playing styles, weapons and items; not to mention all the hidden stuff that you will only find by exploring the use of the above. So I can see why so many people have been badly dissapointed and given the game a low rating.

For me, this is two games in one - a fantastic action game and a fantastic stealth game which looks incredible. I got my copy for a fraction of full price brand new so I am well pleased with it for value for money. I would reccommed it to everyone but bare in mind two things, my review above and the following quote.

''You can play through this game and not even scratch the surface''.

I would guess the 1 / 2 star people out there just didnt get into it as it certainly derserves far more respect and of course - time. Dont buy brand new and if you are going to get it, play it through at least twice as I will.

5 out of 5 stars Best MGS ever!   October 14, 2008

The Good.........
The way the story brings together most of the plots and characters from all three previous games. The narrative answers some of the questions from past games.

My favourite part of the game was the return to shadow moses. This was a completely genius idea. All MGS fans remember charging through shadow moses in 1998 and despite the advances in MGS settings, nowhere feels like the home of MGS than shadow moses. It was brilliant going back and seeing how it had changed and how in many ways the same. It really felt like you were going back to somewhere you hadn't been for 10 years.

The character realism and relationships were at another level. Again 10 years since it all began it was great seeing how the characters had developed. The characters are what makes MGS.

Graphics and HD - This game really took full advantage of HD gaming. The detail in the setting and characters faces was outstanding. I have yet to see a PS3 game use the HD this well.

Drebin was a good addition. The flexibility to buy and sell weapons was probably overdue and enables different players to use different tactics playing the game. He brought something different to the series, as did Little Gray the monkey of course.

New enemys -
The idea of using new versions of MGS1 enemies in the Beauty in the Beast unit was great. I also liked the challenge of the addition of Gekkos and mini Gekkos (the black spheres with a hand). However mini Gekkos are an annoyance to deal with, but its good to be kept challenged.

Meryl - great to see her back in the series.

The microwave tunnel, classic MGS4. The music montage as you stagger through and see how everyone elses battles are falling apart. Its very emotional, I was pressing Triangle as quickly as I could, but couldnt get through the whole tunnel. It hot in there!

The not so good.....
With MGS you know that you are going to spend a lot of time watching long and sometimes complicated cut scenes. There is a lot, although the ratio of game play to cut scenes is probably better than it was for MGS2. However the cut scenes are normally interesting and a major part of the game.

**Spoiler alert**
The probable demise of Solid Snake and wrapping up of the plot. Its great seeing how the plot resolves and Snake surviving the events. However what about the next game in a couple of years? This cant be the end for solid snake can it? My hope is that someone develops something to reverse Snakes rapid ageing and we get MGS5.

Limited codec - the reliance on the codec has been trimmed down for MGS4. Sometimes when i needed advice defeating a boss i struggled to get it out of codec chats.

Meryl marrying Johnny? Not sure about that! I always thought it was love between Snake and Meryl!

Conclusion
This game is without doubt the best MGS game ever released, and not just because it benefited from the HD generation of gaming. The plot and characters were brilliant. I believe it is the best game to be released on PS3 so far.

4 out of 5 stars Sneaky Sneaky   October 6, 2008

I really like the story mode on this although i just loose intrest when i cant get passed a bit after a while, but this is a really clever game i like how you can ethier play it sneaky or go in all guns blazin. Im not the best at sneakin. I love the octo camo i want some of that. How good an idea was it to put a virtual ipod on this to calm snakes nerves now thats some thought been put into this game every little detail is covered.

The online games are good there are various game modes its diffrent from your normal online game whch is a good thing. they have managed to incorporate the sneaking into this. If you like a game where you can sit down for hours and play this is for you. This is the first metal gear solid game i have played and liked it yo dont need to have played the others although it might add to the storyline but as you play through you begin to realise what happened in the previous ones.

5 out of 5 stars Great Online and Offline   October 5, 2008

This is a great game and one of the best games I have seen so far.

The offline play(The full game) is a great sequel to all of the other games as it gives you all of the answers for the game that you have been waiting for and will surprise you with loads of twists and turns that you would never of expected.

Also, they have online play which will probably revolutionise all other games. It allows you to create one character and then build up loads of skills and your own characters personal level. There are thousands of players online and is one of the biggest online games so far. Also, it is only a starter pack. Your can buy expansions from the Konami website but it will cost about 5 or 10.

I would recommend this to anyone, even if they have never played any of the Metal Gear Solid series.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the nay-sayers   October 3, 2008

First of all, to everyone saying this is more a movie than a game/the most boring movie they've ever watched etc. Do be quiet. You can skip the cut scenes so dry your little eyes, however you risk missing out huge segments of the story line but if it bores you so much then what have you got to lose?

There are no words to describe just how engaging and breathtaking this game is. I mean wow, it's been a long time since a game has impressed me so. I had it for a couple of months but I was so busy working all the time I barely had a chance to play it. Then a friend of mine got it and completed it within about 3-4 days. Ok, I thought, I need to finish that game, so I played it to act 3, then from act 3 to finish, not because I wanted to keep up with my friend, but because I literally couldn't put the controller down.

It's THAT good.

Graphics 10/10 - Stunning attention to detail, if you equip the barrel on shadow moses island, snow builds up on it from the direction it's falling. You don't even need to use the barrel! Nice touch.

Sound 9/10 - Immersive, moody. It really pulls you into the game, you ARE Solid Snake for a few hours.

Gameplay 9/10 - It's fun to play, easy to get to grips with. I will admit it is a little bit TOO easy at times but that can be fixed by playing it on Big Boss Extreme mode. Otherwise, superb.

If you own a PS3 you owe it to yourself to get this game. I need to end this review now because when I start a MGS4 rant I can't stop and I would not want to ruin the game for those who haven't played it yet.
