5 out of 5 stars Very involved MGS4 is a big awesome game....   September 18, 2008

Well, after owning this game for several months I have come full circle in my opinion of it. First impressions were fantastic, however after a week or two I found the game play almost too involved and difficult to get the most out of the game. Fiddly, complicated and too many weapons to pick from. Cut sequences are long but excellent. Controls are great with a "weapon shop" available within the pause menu. Great styling and great graphics. The frame rate can become impaired in "busy" parts of the game. However I have come full circle and keep getting impressed with this game, it just keeps blowing me away. Once you get used to its intense involvement and finding the correct style to play it, it becomes the most rewarding game I have ever played. Need to slow yourself down in this game (you learn how to go guns blazing early in game, which is handy as a backup) and not run around like a headless chicken...once you have learned the environment and got an idea of whats going on you can get a "feel" of whats required, like stealth or assault tactics. It can also help to have good levels of concentration, snake smokes tobacco, and I undersatand where he is coming from (despite me not being a smoker no longer). This games feel comes in time and enables the player to get something that you can never get from any other game, a feeling of realism. Not realism as in reality but a realism within the game, and understanding of whats going on and whats required. I can only explain it by saying it must be what virtual reality feels like, total control of your environment. Go along for the ride and dont run around like a headless chicken, master the controls and the environment and be a real gamer....

1 out of 5 stars The most boring movie I've ever seen   September 15, 2008

Obviously my requirements for a game are a little more demanding than most of the reviewers here. I wanted to PLAY Metal Gear Solid 4, sneak through the shadows, traquilizing guards from the security of my bush, dodging security cameras and enjoy the wonderful quirky sense of humour that is Kojima.

The humour's still there - if you can find it buried deep within the 5 million hours of boring monologs, exposition and meaningless rhetoric of the protagonists. I however, have a life, and after an hour and a half of watching this tripe between Act2 and Act 3 i gave up and did something else. After 2 weeks i came back - i've finished all the other Metal Gear games damn it, i'll finish this one too - 10 minutes of play later, my hard work of walking through a room was rewarded with ANOTHER 90 minutes of cut scenes.... Give me strength.

Oh but wait, they re-made Shadow Moses and it looks GREAT, shame they forgot to put any enemies into it. On my journey i met an invincible mech who i wasted all my ammo on, and another one i dodged by crawling through an office.

Kojima has always been ecsentric, but this is the work of a Holywood wannabe director who's seen Titanic one too many times and who's in desperate need of a ruthless editor.

I am bitterly disappointed with this game. During one of my watching sessions I actually checked the box to see if it still said 'Tactical Stealth Action' on the cover, it does, what lies!

They say Kojima got death threats when he said he wasn't making a fourth game. I think i'll send him one if he's planning on making a fifth.

Buy this game if you like watching ridiculous action movies.
Buy this game if you like looking at guns, lots of guns, in your menu.
Buy this game if you have a lot of spare time or have trouble sleeping.

Don't buy this game if you want to PLAY your game.
Don't buy this game if you want to play a SNEAKING game.
Don't buy this game if you expect more enemies than weapons in your games.

2 out of 5 stars wheres the gameplay?.....   September 15, 2008

What can you say about Metal Gear Solid 4? It has nice graphics, theres a whole lot of cutscenes and occasionally a bit of gameplay. The gameplay has hardly moved on from the first game and the cutscenes are quite often too long, dull and overwritten. If you're a metal gear fan then you'll know what to expect - its got all the superfluous junk you could want and then some more, if you're not then you know what to expect - its a half decent story delivered in a ludicrous and boring fashion with hardly revolutionary gameplay. Think shakespeare if it were being performed by brain damaged monkeys.

When you're not being forced to watch a cutscene the game can be very enjoyable but by my reckoning about 70% of the time was spent watching rather than doing. Most of the time I was very bored but every now and then theres a small bit worth seeing or a good bit to play, the game is just about worth playing if you're not a fan but only just.

1 out of 5 stars Did I not get this game?   September 14, 2008

So from reviews I was expecting this to be a cult game like Zelda or GTA and so on. However, this is the 1st MGS I have purchased and just did not get it? I played it for like 2 hours then just returned it because it was so boring. I haven't bought one before and I will not buy again.

4 out of 5 stars beyond impressive   September 11, 2008

Its more than a game, its a movie as well. The inovative approach, graphics, attention to detail is quite remarkable. The volume of technical research that has gone into this is quite incredible. The usual sneaking tactic is very much part of it but the combat option is available too and with the vast array of equipment snake can pick up it makes combat very attractive as opposed to hiding. Purchase this in complete confidence. I gave up on previous MGS games but this is something special. Even COD 4 cant match it.
The only gripe is the sticky sentimentality. Especially during the epilogue chapter at the end. Intrestingly enough Snake is in a position to put in another appearance....
