A game or a movie? August 30, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
The online game is superb but the regular game has far too little game play and 90% of it you just have to sit back and watch the countless cut-scenes.
Snake sneaks into first August 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
MGS 4 is easily the best MGS in the series so if your into them then this is an absolute must buy, and if your not well this game is still for you, the story mode is a little slow at the beginning however as the game progresses this improves vastly with more action and more impact.
Be warned though this is not really a pick up and play game you must put at least 45 minutes aside to play this game otherwise you might find yourself stuck for time in the middle of one of the many cutscenes.
And now i must discuss Metal Gear Online, the online game supplied with MGS4,which quite frankly in my opinion is the best I've ever played on my PS3 the only bad thing about it is that you find it hard to stop playing it. I've played COD4 online but it's not in the same league as MGO its really that good, especially the "team sneaking" mode which is ingenious.
So Overall i gave this game a well deserved 5 star rating because of the decent story mode but mainly because of the incredible online play.
Soooooooo disappointing! August 23, 2008 14 out of 20 found this review helpful
I just don't get it! Am I playing the same game as those who gave this 5 stars?! If you remove all the cut-scenes (which are cinematic and often entertaining but ... God give me strength! the frequency, slowness and relentless length of them!) you'd end up with just very MEDIOCRE game play. It feels like the gaming engine is struggling to deliver a tactile control experience. But Uncharted-Drake's Progress's graphics are the equal (possibly superior) to this, and that game is incredibly fast and responsive.
Let's be clear, this is not so much a game as a long form animation with some old style 2nd rate corridor gaming thrown in. Terrible sluggish controls, and bog-standard unimaginative shoot-em-ups. All the cool stuff happens in the cut-scenes BUT YOU DON'T GET TO TAKE PART!!! ARRRGH!!!!!
And why can't Snake behave in the (admittedly stunning) environments like a human could? So often he is unable to climb an obstacle that would present no problem to a child. Mercenaries set the benchmark for real world physics (you can roam a whole country, and wherever a human could go you can go) and that's a PS2 game!
The creator of this wants to be a movie director (he's setting out his stall for Hollywood with this), but what makes a good script for a game (and this veers from really rather good to silly) would make a terrible B-movie.
Do yourself a massive favour and go buy the utterly brilliant Uncharted or wait for Mercenaries 2 (which if it is anything like 1 will be a real treat!).
Exceeds what you come to expect from a game August 20, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For anyone looking for reviews of this game the internet will provide a vast array, so I will keep mine brief and to the point.
If you like any previous Metal Gear for the story buy this. If you liked them for the gameplay this will blow you away. It is single most beautifully balanced and effortlessly executed experience I have enjoyed in around 15 years of gaming. This is also the reason I ignore criticisms of the story being overbearing, as a fan of the story i watched enjoyed every minute on a couple of playthroughs and subsequently skipped story sequences and just played the game, there isn't a single section which is less than great and many moments when it touches phenomenal.
I close by strongly recommending you try the online portion of the game too. I pretty much ignored it until recently and I'm not hugely into online gaming yet either, but MGS4 gameplay + a large variety of fun and interesting individual and team-based modes = a surprisingly fun and addictive experience.
Bottom line: this game oozes class. Don't miss out on this diamond.
Watch a movie instead August 15, 2008 4 out of 23 found this review helpful
Have to disagree with the majority of people here. Bought the game on the strength of all the positive reviews and utter disappointed. Lots of cut scenes; so what I can buy a blue ray disc if I want that. Controls are not intuitive and with some awful camera angles makes it a real pain to play. Only wish I could send it back for a refund as after 3-4 hours of play am sorely tempted to throw it in the trash....never again Konami.
