Dosent live up to the hype... April 13, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Too short, not as good as expected. Found alot of bugs in-game aswell...
Xbox Live is good though, if you want a game just for online play, (and you have friends :P) get it, but dont expect a fantastic campaign.
Please note: If you live in the EU, you cannot play with the Americans. (I know it sucks.)
NOT Xbox Live compatible April 9, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Please read other reviews for game opinion. This is an important note for anyone wanting to buy the game:
If you are planning on using this game on Xbox Live, do NOT buy it. Incredibly you cannot actually play people in other regions, there is no apparent reason for this. For example if you live in the UK and you always play with people in the US, you can't play them on this.
RIDICULOUS.
Quite possibly the best Xbox co-op shooter yet April 5, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
If, like my brother and I, you love your co-op shoot-em-ups, then Army of Two is definitely worth getting. I'd compare it favourably to Kane and Lynch and the Conflict games as a base of reference, but it has quite a few unique bells and whistles too. For starters, one of the most unusual aspects of AoT is that you can't pick up enemy weapons, which might sound odd. Instead you can purchase different weapons from various mid-mission arms dealers and then customise them in the most imaginative ways. Once I'd finished with my AK-47, for example, the various barrel, cartridge, stock and frountmount additions left it looking completely unrecognisable!
The co-op features are also a big part of Army of Two. Whether you have to perform a simultaneous snipe or boost each other to climb to a high platform, it's clear that this game was really designed for two players. There are the typical vehicle scenarios where one of you has to act as the gunner while the other drives, but there is also the creative use of riot-shields where one player holds the shield and moves whilst the other sporadically pops out and fires.
Which leads me on to the "Aggro" concept, which Army of Two seems to consider one of their better ideas. The theory is that if player A is firing, hostiles will all concentrate their fire on him and completely ignore player B, who can surreptitiously slip around behind and take them out without hassle. I found that it works well in theory but rarely in practice. That said, however, it was certainly an innovative and interesting strategic addition to my usual gung-ho gameplay.
The graphics are of course superb, as well as the real-world physics we've all come to expect from the 360. The story and characters are engaging and the co-op and customisation factors make Army of Two a very well-rounded game. The only negative point about it is that, like so many 360 shooters I've played recently (Halo 3, Kane & Lynch, Gears of War) it is far too short, with about 14 hours of solid gaming. But with huge customisation possibilities, fluid action-packed gameplay and the option of online multiplayer battles, I can't recommend this game highly enough. If you like tactical shoot-em-ups or co-op games in general, you'll love Army of Two.
All Hype And Little Hope April 5, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ahh, the hype machine. EA had it kicked into high gear for Army of Two, even though it missed its original release date at the end of last year. Apparently the developers wanted to make 'the best game they could'. Statements like this make me wonder just how bad Army of Two was in December, because the final product is pretty average shooter.
The game's based on the tale of two mercenaries and the huge conspiracy they and their company get embroiled in. The fact that positions of soliders were being leaked wasnt really used to its full potential; with America's situation overseas and the problems currently facing its government, it seems a shame that this part of the story wasnt used well enough. Instead, its kept small scale.
Single player wise, controlling your partner's actions on the battlefield can add an interesting mechanic to the standard point-and-shoot-from-cover affair. Your partner can also heal you, cover you, take away unwanted attention, pretty much everything except buy you a pint. And aside from a few moments of madness, your AI partner generally works quite well. Playing co-op with a buddy is an improvement too, if mainly just for the fun and company.
Elsewhere, there are a few nice touches; suicide bombers running at you, whether successful or unsuccessful in their attempts are a formidable enemy in all levels, and the weapons dealers are even able to offer you pimped up versions of most guns. But on the other side of that, the level design is fairly unimaginative and extremely linear, the characters are never really fully developed giving you little reason to care. And the guns? Dont get me started. Never have I played a game where the simple act of firing a weapon has given so little satisfaction. Machine guns really are amazingly quiet and never give you any feeling of power.
Army of Two took a fairly interesting two-player mechanic and an intruiging story and never fully delivers on either, merely offering glimpses at what a good game it could've been and isn't ever as gritty as you assume it will be. But then, the game again is never so unenjoyable that it slips into mediocrity; it's long enough for a decently-paced story, and doesn't take itself that seriously.
A decent enough shooter, but nothing that special
Fantastic!!! BUT far far too short! April 2, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is superb for playing online co-op. The aggro tactic (one of you takes the fire while the other flanks) is well thought out and well executed. The gameplay is nothing special but still great but that is all outweighed by the brilliance of "pimping" your weapons. You get to buy a large array of weapons with many upgrades for each. And when that wasnt enough and you feel a little let down, for $10,000 you get to cover them in gold! It might not sound exciting now, but running around with a golden AK-47 or Silver and Gold plated Stinger missle launcher for some reason gave me a huge buzz and me and my mate couldnt wait to get more money to pimp out our whole aresnal!! The only slip up here as far as im concerned (as long as you arent one of these people who focuses and sound and stuff) is that it was far far to short!! Just as i was getting excited about pimping out my new shotgun to the max, It ended! The only consolation here is that if you play it again on professional mode, all the primary weapons are unlocked and you can begin covering them in ridiculous amounts of gold too! In short: Great Idea Great Story GREAT GUNS! TOO SHORT!!
