The greatest war FPS ever? Possibly... November 11, 2007 This game just blew me away, from the moment I started, until the very end. OK, so the start left me questioning-(the start involves a small training section which is mainly to allow you to become familiar with controls and to select your difficulty level) but it was essential. Then it kicks in. You see a helicopter hovering over a massive tanker in the ocean and you and your team immediately descend ropes onto the platform. Your buddies make intelligent comments and orders adding to create excellent realism. The lighting is superb as you descend into the lower parts to retrieve the "package." Then something happens, the tanker starts to fill up, the perspective changes. This is just exceptional. Graphically, the effort that has gone in is amazing. The Russian levels stand out for me personally, where you slowly make your way down a river, under bridges in the twilight. You can see overturned shopping trollies, cars, and in the distance, the buildings glimmering with lights. Beautiful, although you'll also get to visit other locations such as the middle east. The gameplay is pretty samey (no bad thing) but the weapons reflect the time zone. Previous installments have seen you using WW2 weapons, but now you have a modern arsenal including an RPG, silenced weapons etc. You also have the use of a knife for close combat. Again, depending on the difficulty, it may take a few shots to take you out, or just one-it really depends. Their are a variety of missions including using a tank and helicopter shooting missions (I personally did not like these, it was limited to black and white and it felt (whilst realistic) very weak.) The sound, the speach is excellent. Online mode sees you have ranks and has a variety of modes. The speed of connection is excellent and level design pleasing. All in all, this is an excellent game. Buy it.
Amazing November 11, 2007 I have just bought this game and may i say i beleive it is the best call of duty yet. I would recomend this game to anyone it is so graphically rich and immerses one directly into yhe game.
Call of Duty 4 really is genuinely breathtaking... November 11, 2007 Call of Duty 4 is finally upon us, with the 4th addition to the critically acclaimed series from infinity ward. With the success of recent shooters like Halo 3, Bioshock and Shadowrun etc, Call of Duty 4 has a lot to live up to. Leaving WWII behind, the game focuses on "Modern Combat", with a deep storyline which has to be one of the best although not quite as good as halo but better than Bioshock and the previous call of duty games. The singleplayer campaign is brilliant, I especially love the "stealth" mission in Chernobyl. The only thing I can say against it is that it could be a bit longer, but thats probably because I enjoyed it so much. Gameplay has a great pace and atmosphere about it which is unmatchable and with the addition of stunning graphics which are well on par with "next-gen" shooters like gears of war and bioshock, it really is outstandingly good. Multiplayer is just as good, gameplay is just about perfect, can't fault it, a new feature is the ability to call in UAV drones, helicopter gunships, and air strikes when you get killing streaks. Furthermore lag is almost non-existent, and matchmaking is so quick that it makes halo 3's matchmaking times seem like years!
Overall an absoloutely stunning game YOU MUST BUY IT without a doubt, well worthy of a place in your collection. 5/5 all around.
Hooray , they got it back!!! November 9, 2007 Thanks be , the chaps who made COD2 have regained the reigns and have made another great game ( COD3 for me was a disapointment , nice tanks + jeeps tho ).
I played the online game first and was very impressed , no lag , full rooms , no waiting for people to green / blue up to start the game .. wonderful.
So far all the maps have been fun and not too big. It plays smoothly and you get a real sense on being there. Weapons are diverse and you can still compete in matches with the basic guns you start with.
The main single player story mode is ok so far , and graphically looks impressive.
So .. a very worthy purchase ( I traded in Halo 3 .. leaving behind all the way too fast jumpy shooty shouty young children who just seem to want to rank up .. and shout and jump ). If you are a casual / normal player BUY NOW before the real hard core gamers get so good you dont stand a chance!!!
All in all, in my humble opinion, the best online first person shooter ( after Call Of Duty 2 and Ghost Recon 2 , that is ).
Disappointing omission of online split-screen November 9, 2007 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
My favourite thing about COD3 was playing online splitscreen with my flatmates and friends. Very very disappointed to have discovered that this feature is not available on this game, and that the only way to play split screen is in private offline matches. The online multiplayer looks brilliant but now if playing with friends in the same house, you have to either take turns each or have multiple xboxs! This game is still good, and im looking forward to playing the single player story, but i dont think id have been so excited about this game if i had realised before i got it that the multiplayer isn't as social as on COD3.
