2 out of 5 stars Great single player, frustrating online play   June 10, 2008
0 out of 4 found this review helpful

I bought COD 4 because i was told that it was far superior to Gears of War, i did agree with this...for about a day.

That first day i agreed was the day i played the single player campaign, it is a brilliant storyline with entertaining levels (My favourite bieng 'All Ghillied Up'), though the graphics could have been better i thought this was an excellent game.
Next day i decided to go online because i had finished the campaign. Oh how dissapointed i was. Now before i get attacked by other users sayin 'you're just bad at this game' i'm not, i completed my first prestige within a day. Let's start off with the so called 'realistic' gameplay that everyone seems to be using as a plus to the game. This game is anything but realistic, players run through bullets, grenades go off every 2 seconds, every dead body seems to drop a grenade. These are the main things that make the game so frustrating. How many people do you know can sprint through 3 bullets from an MP5 and then pull out a knife and stab you in the face? So that's the 'realistic' gameplay out the window. Now in my opinion, COD4 was given a mass amount of weapons without thinking of balancing the power or accuracy. Too many times i have been shot and killed by a single burst of the M16 after pumping 3 shots from the .50 cal sniper rifle. The Desert levels of the multiplayer are also incredibly biased to the Marine team, first of all they receive much better camoflauge than the opposing team, especiallt the sniper class, the iranians are given red berets! That sticks out like a sore thumb!
The majority of the maps are badly designed, usually giving one team an advantage over the other with either higher ground or more tactical positions.

Overall, the campaign is great, one of the best i've ever played, but the multiplayer ruins what could've been an iconic video game. Personally, i'll be sticking to Gears.

5 out of 5 stars You'll still be playing long after the missus has gone to bed...   June 3, 2008
This game is by and large exceptionally stunning. The graphics are incredible, even life like (check that Ghillie suit out!), HD however is a must to get the full experience and benefits - especially for focussing on targets at distance. The sounds are recycled from previous COD's but still sounds superb coming into a surround sound set up - even if it is Stereo and not true 5.1 as the xbox only outputs out in Stereo to an external amp using a dongle cable (available on Amazon). The story Gameplay was a thrill a minute kinda stuff, although the story in my opinion could have been 2-3 levels longer. Multiplayer- the good stuff! I've racked up 27,000 kills and 15 days of continuous play thanks to this game since November. Generally the online experience is exceptional as some of the players that you play against are very devious and accurate (hopefully you get these guys fighting alongside you) and will watch your back as you watch theirs - instilling some commaradary and some laughs; although sometimes you'll get frustrated by the American kids singing and generally making brash arses of themselves (if you have a headset). I have to stop harping on about this and get back to work, get the game, do it first - then go online for a fight! 10/10

4 out of 5 stars good game   May 22, 2008
this game is probably one of the best FPS's around. the only reason i gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because the campaign is a little short.

5 out of 5 stars The best FPS easily   May 18, 2008
I'm wasnt a huge COD fan of the previously released games. But I'm a massive FPS fan so having heard that they've re-invented the series to have an upto date theme and style, I was looking forward to playing it.

This game is quite frankly the benchmark for all modern FPS. Halo 3 doesnt even come close to matching the beautiful graphics, the fast frantic play and the options online.

Story mode is short - Sorry it just is - about 6-8 hours on normal and a few days on the hardest settings. This game and most modern NEXT-GEN games are concentrating for online play.

Dont get me wrong the story is amazing its just very very short, so if you dont have online play i.e GOLD live - DONT BOTHER buying it. It'll ruin what is an amazing game.

Online is frankly a soul sucking experience, The massive amount of online options - Team Deathmatch,Free for all,Ground War, Search and destory etc - est 16 different style of games.

And the now benchmark ranking online system which Rainbow six vegas 1/2 has copied and most likely future FPS will copy.
You gain more weapons as you gain experience and full-fill certains challenges.
The new online maps (800points) or the Game of the year Edition - with free maps. If you have live this is a truely brilliant game - Solid to start with and extremely addictive once played for a few hours. This game (so far) has got 3days 11 hrs of my life and I'm sure it'll more.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Game, But What Are Its Flaws?   May 8, 2008

First and foremost let me say that this game is utterly stunning. I would go as far as to say it may be the best game i have ever played. The single player campaign is incredibly intense, exciting and challenging, and the multiplayer is even better.
However i find when im reading reviews on amazon it isn't to read people praising a game, i generally want to know whats wrong with it and whether it puts me off buying it. (I know, im a horrible pessimist!)
So, heres what i think is wrong with this game:
1. Since the patch this has become much less of a problem, but all the same, the host migration issue is my biggest gripe. I mean by this that when the host leaves the game, it will end and restart once a new host has been selected. For the life of me i can't understand why this host migration couldn't take place in-game, allowing people to continue playing.
2. The single player campaign is a little short. Make no bones about it, the single player campaign is fantastic. It has amazing set pieces, looks beautiful, it is unbelievably intense and varied and on higher difficulties it becomes very challenging. However, with the quality of this content you find yourself wanting more, as the game just seems to end too quickly. If this campaign was 50% or 100% longer it would comfortably go down as the best single player game i have ever played.
3. Slightly overpowered perks. The perks you can get in multiplayer are a genius idea, and really add to the game. However there are a couple which seem to give too much of an advantage. The most obvious of these is the juggernaught perk, which allows people to sustain far more damage before dying. I cannot describe how frustrating it is to hit people with 2 good shots with a Barret 50 cal and then watch them run off to some cover. I'm sorry but if i hit someone in the chest with a GIANT high velocity bullet, or half a mag from an SMG then they NEED to die, i mean what is this, Halo?! However this may just be me whinging because im a sniper and some perks work annoyingly against me (bullet penetration being another one).
4. Im shocked this hasn't been mentioned more but a boot option! I can't stand whiny kids, racists, xenophobes and generally horrible people screaming down their mikes when im trying to relax and play a game. Whilst on the whole the atmosphere is good on COD4 you do get these people, and it flabbergasts me that Infinity didn't allow a vote system to kick people out, perhaps with a 75% threshold to stop it being abused by parties or used against people who are doing well. Most of all this would be useful in the hardcore modes for those most sinful of people, the teamkillers!
So, those are my 4 main problems with this game, and if Infinity does another modern COD game (probably COD 6) then i hope they would make these changes, or even make them with patches for COD4 in some cases.
However i have to once again stress that this is my favourite game, i love it, and all of the brilliant 5 star reviews on here discuss its excellence far better than i can so i would advise you read them. These faults are all very minor issues when taken in the context of how good this game is.
So, buy this game and if you haven't got it, buy an x-box live account, because the multiplayer is what really elevates this game to one of the best of all time.
