Haze got a raw deal! June 5, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The problem with Haze is quite simply the hype that preceded it. If you pick it up with no expectations, you get a simple but fun FPS with a nice online component and a reasonable story and graphics. If you expect it to be a "Halo killer" or the best FPS of all time, you'll be disappointed and you will hate it. Haze starts with you as a soldier working for Mantel Corporation, in a not so distant future. Governments don't have armies anymore and Mantel has stepped in, hired to maintain order around the world. The game takes place in a South American country, where ethnic cleansing is going on and where Mantel is trying to save the people from an evil dictator. Mantel soldiers not only have better and more powerful weapons they also have Nectar, a drug that makes them stronger, quicker and fearless. The first third of the game is all about Nectar. When you push L2 you get a shot of the drug which makes enemies shine, gives you more health and gives you an edge in most situations. Soon enough you see that Mantel is not so innocent and you will then turn on your fellow soldiers and join the rebels. You then lose Nectar but gain other abilities like the agility to dodge bullets or playing dead. You can also plant grenades on the floor, as traps or steal a Mantel's soldier's weapon by pressing R2 and then square. These are not bad abilities but the game takes Nectar away too soon and you miss it. Nectar is fun to use and some of the rebels attributes are somewhat useless. For example, you can steal weapons but expect to die most of the times you try it. Another problem with the game are the vehicles which are not very easy to control, sometimes being downright frustrating. The graphics are from average to bad. With Uncharted or CoD4 you really expect more and Haze is not even close to it. The gameplay is where the game shines. The guns are fun to use and the controls are tight. You can also customize all the controls, if you wish. Simply put, the game is fun. You also have online co-op with 3 other players which works flawlessly. Players come in or leave, seamlessly and everything works perfectly. It's really entertaining to play with other people by your side. There's also the usual Team Death Match and there's a mode called Team Assault where you play as the rebels or Mantel soldiers and where you have objectives to achieve such as preventing a Nectar field from being burned or Nectar crates in the caves, from being destroyed among others. The game is easy, even on harder difficulties and at about 7 hours, not very long. The AI also has problems and could have used more work but is not bad enough to break the game. The story is overly simplistic and underdeveloped but if you look closely, there's actually a message to it. The acting goes from acceptable to abysmal. Some fault also goes to some lines which are almost unbelievably bad. Haze is in its essence an average game. Its gameplay shines and nothing about it is really bad. A good online component and a fun and rewarding shooting mechanic make it a good bet for fans of the genre. Take is for what it is. It's an entertaining, flawed but very enjoyable experience. I loved it.
Disappointing June 5, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
For all of its hype and promise, Haze is an extremely disappointing game. The single-player campaign is too short and almost insultingly easy - even on the highest difficulty setting. Furthermore, the game is riddled with glitches and does not really look next-gen - even plugged in with the HDMI cable.
Haze could have made up for this by having excellent multiplayer. Unfortunately, it doesn't: maps are small and spawns are predictable.
What is most disappointing about Haze is that, as a PS3-only title, it makes you feel like you might have backed the wrong horse. Thankfully, there are better games out there.
Good but not blown away! June 5, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Id like to start and think that im an expert on shooter games as it is all i play on my PS3....this game is ok...probably a bit better than ok. It gets better the more you play it as things start to emerge. I have to be honest, the graphics dont blow you away...there not bad as we are talking PS3 here, but you would expect better for a next generation game. I have played Drakes Fortune and they are what you call graphics...so if you compare the graphics to that...there is some way to go. I would compare this game to resistance fall of man! Anyway, i am enjoying playing and dont regret buying it
Not worth it. June 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my first review of a ps3 game and I can honestly say, I never listen to reviews. I prefer to play the game myself and rate it myself, as everyone has different opinions. I was really looking forward to this game, the pics looked really good and it looked unique.
The truth is, it is fun to play. I got very frustrated at some points as it doesn't suit my style of play and I died quite alot. For those it does suit I can understand you would enjoy it.
I do think this game is good, but not worth the money. I got to the end and all I could say was.. its finished? I enjoyed most of it but it took me 2 days to complete it and if your not one for multiplayer then it can really be disappointing.
This game has surely been released unfinished. June 2, 2008 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I cant believe this is a title that Sony want to market as a PS3 saviour.
I completed this game within a few hours, it's very short...and very dull. The actual premise seems quite a good one and I do like story based FPS, but this undelivers in so many ways. Having recently bought a PS3 after selling my 360, I was looking forward to the exclusive titles due out soon. Drakes Fortune was amazing, so I thought that Haze would be visually stunning with a firm story and a solid multiplayer too. I had watched a programme about Haze on satellite a while back and thought it was going to be immense. I steered clear of any reviews and I was aware of the previous titles the programmers had been involved in. Once I started playing, I was completely underwhelmed by the graphics, they were simply dull. Textures were uninteresting; the passing jungle was blurry with no definition... it looked very shabby. The gameplay wasnt up to much either; enemies seemed to be just sitting and waiting for you; your own team gets in the way all the time; if you leave them behind they miraculously appear from midair right infront of you! How very amatuerish for a game with this much investment. Quite often when I got killed by Mantel the last save would loadup placing my character suspended in midair as the ground had disappeared. When playing against Mantel the rebels shout the same annoying phrase every couple of seconds "remember your promise to Merrino" god it was infuriating! Even the set pieces were uninspiring. A waste of good money. It gets 2 stars because hidden behind all the shabby programming a half decent game exists, but in no way shape or form is this a next generation game. Save your money, no doubt the shops will already be flooded by second hand games, but certainly dont pay full price for it. Lets hope MGS takes advantage of the power available inside the PS3.
