1 out of 5 stars AWFUL!   June 1, 2008
1 out of 10 found this review helpful

I DONT WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS GAME TOO MUCH BUT ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT:

1) THE GRAPHICS ARE RUBBISH
2) THE GAMEPLAY IS RUBBISH
3) CINEMATICS AND DIALOGUE ARE RUBBISH
4) SAVE YOUR MONEY NOW AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE!!!!!!

I TOO HAVE A XBOX 360 AND I HAVE TO ADMIT, THERE ARE SO MUCH BETTER GAMES ON THE 360 THAT I HAVNT USED MY 60GB PS3 SINCE LAUNCH AFTER JUST PLAYING PROBABLY AN HOUR ON IT BEFORE I BOXED IT BACK UP. I HEARD ABOUT THIS GAME RECENTLY AND ALSO CLAIMING THAT IT WAS A GAME WORTHY OF GETTING THE PS3 UP TO STANDARDS BUT NOT SURPRISINGLY IT WAS A AWFUL TITLE.

I PLAY ALLOT OF SHOOTERS AND THAT IS MY PREFERRED TYPE OF GAME AND THIS WAS ONE OF THE WORST TITLES IN RECENT TIMES THAT I HAVE PLAYED, I TRIED TO MAKE EXCUSES UP FOR IT AND HOPED IT WOULD GET BETTER THE MORE YOU PLAY THE GAME BUT OBVIOUSLY IT DIDNT, I THOUGHT TO MYSELF IF I COULD DIG IT OUT AND PLAY IT THROUGH BUT I COULDNT, SO I TRADED MY GAME STRAIGHT AWAY THE NEXT DAY AFTER THE RELEASE DATE.

TO SUM IT UP, IF YOU WANT A TOP CLASS SHOOTER WITH EVERYTHING IN IT, BUY CALL OF DUTY 4, IF YOU ALREADY OWN THIS, THEN WAIT TILL SOMETHING ELSE COMES OUT, OTHERWISE GET METAL GEAR SOLID 4, THAT WILL BE A WORTHY GAME TO SHOUT ABOUT ON THE PS3!

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad but Not Great   June 1, 2008

Right im going to keep this short and sweet unliek the other reviews. We have all waited a long time for this, so ofcourse it's going to seem like a dissapointment. In all honesty the simple fact is this game is not that hard or that long. Completed the game on hard level in three hours and i dont profess to be a First Person god. Not on the same level as Call of Duty 4 so far as game play. Just hope they release some more levels maybe or this game is going to be traded in. Online play is generally ok but not the reason i bought the game.

1 out of 5 stars Fails in nearly every way.   May 31, 2008

Haze is a poor game on all fronts: the graphics and physics of the enviroment are lazy... trees that look like cardboard cut-outs, and leaves and bushes that dont budge when you walk through them.
The enemys won't flinch if you shoot them while out of sight, you can only kill them if they are actively seeking you, if you shoot them while they are loading up a truck or lighting a fire they can take 100's of bullets without noticing.
The story side of the game is dull and pointless, the cutscenes are clumsy with characters lips moving for 10 seconds after their speech has ended. It's probably the worst voice acting and script in any game that I've played, some of it had me in stitches... "Don't call him a fag sir", they sound more like stereotype American college frat boys than soldiers.
There are some kinda cool moments amongst the mess, its hard not to have a good(ish) time in co-op mode with a friend... we nearly managed it, it was more fun to shoot each other in the back, which sends the player crazy for about 10 seconds, than to actually follow the game. The drug nectar addition is quite nice, makes the enemy glow orange which you nearly need to use all of the time because the enemy seems so hard to locate and shoot, feels like you are aiming at needles without the nectar.
Overall it's a poor game and a lazy attempt to create a Halo for the PS3, save your money.

3 out of 5 stars About 18 months too early leaving the developers floor   May 30, 2008

I'm sure a lot of people had hopes as high as myself for Haze, coming from the near faultless pedigree it comes from, the pieces were all there for something really special. Did we get it? Nope, not nearly, what we got is a game that feels like it hasn't had nearly enough time or resources devoted to it's production, leading to a massive disppointment of a game.

First major problem to hit me was the visuals. These are very underwhelming for about 80 percent of the game, looking like the sort of thing you'd have been playing 4-5 years ago on a PC. Most of the textures are flat and light on detail, and even what detail is there occasionally is hit by severe texture pop-in and some nasty tearing. The vehicles too, look really basic and angular, and when they're moving, there's some bad animation(Observe your character riding the quad bike for example). True, The game moves smoothly enough most of the time, and some of the character models are decent, but apart from that, the graphics in this game are just awful.

Sound is likewise uninspired. Flat voice acting, bad dialogue repeated ad nauseum, basic, generic sound effects and music. It's pretty unremarkable here too.

Most annoying part of the game for me though, was the simplistic, unadventurous level design that seemed to lead you by the nose for most of the game, offering no real scope for exploration or alternate approaches to problems, and most of the vehicle driving sections were simple 'drive from point A to B' affairs that seemed to have no real bearing on the game beyond breaking up the constant shooting for a while. It's kind of like the driving level in Gears of War really. Didn't need to be there at all.

Sounds bad so far, yeah? So why a 3 star rating when it sounds like a 1 star game? Well, it's weird, but despite the myriad problems, the gameplay is actually a lot of fun, despite all the above crap taking away from it so heavily. The weapons are decent and easy to use, with some clever options like being able to coat your knives in Nectar to induce an overdose in Mantel soliders being nice additions. The Nectar in the game too, is fun enough for the brief time you get to use it, allowing you to see body heat and improving your speed and strength. It would have gotten really old if you had it throughout the entire game, but as a brief aside and as a multiplayer advantage, it's a decent enough amusement. Basically, this is a fun to play FPS title. No classic, no(Especially not when in recent months I've gotten to play real classics like FEAR and Orange Box), but you'll have played a lot worse... even if those worse games DID look a lot better...

Given that the gameplay is fine, obviously this makes the online multiplayer a lot more fun, with some fun match types to try out(Playing as a Mantel troop taking on rebels as they try to trigger a bomb on your base was a fave of mine) and a surprisingly weel working 4-player co-op mode giving some small incentive to revisit the campaign mode. The online really is probably the best reason to play this game, but even that simply does not match up to the likes of online monsters like Call of Duty 4, GTA4 and Unreal Tournament 3.

In closing, all I can really tell you is that this game is probably the ultimate test in gameplay versus graphics, with poor visuals being counter balanced by decent gameplay. True, the gameplay won't blow you away, but if you can get past the poor visuals(Not easy), you'll have a decent amount of fun with Haze, but honestly, I'd say rent it, as as a full price buy, I really don't think it would be worth it.

A huge shame this wasn't so much better, as it could and should have been in every way. We've seen what the PS3 can really do in the shape of real FPS classics like Call of Duty 4, Unreal tournament 3 and Resistance, so there are really no excuses for Haze. Average simply does not cut it anymore, and Free Radical need to understand this before they even think of getting started on Timesplitters 4.

4 out of 5 stars Unjustified 'overhyped' criticism   May 30, 2008

Well, according to usually reliable internet site reviews (!) Haze is the 'Lair' of 2008!
Seems to me this now infamous review is more 'hyped' than the original media circus surrounding Haze. I just wonder how much Mr Gates paid the reviewer at the aforementioned website!!
Admittedly, not the ground-breaking 'Halo' killer it was meant to be - but all in all an extremely solid shooter, which at it's heart has a user-friendly and (dare I say) excellent user interface - very easy to pick up and great 'fun' (something missing from a lot of modern gameplay) to actually play.
Interesting storyline, not particularly well realised with OTT and cheesy dialogue, but it draws you in enough to keep playing.
Now onto the 'alleged' abomination which are the graphics - a total untruth!!! A little behind the time let's say, but constant framerate, no loading during gameplay, nice smoke effects, reasonable to actually decent character animation - the only downside being some of the rather bland backgrounds - hurried and unfinished.
I've played it through to it's single campaign end, thoroughly enjoyed it, and haven't cried once 'cos it's not COD4!! I'm not a 'graphics whore' I just like being entertained - I have been.
