1 out of 5 stars Haze   May 30, 2008
3 out of 4 found this review helpful

I don't normally put fingers to keyboard regarding reviews but as I played Haze for the first time last night after paying my 40 notes to what was meant to be one of the most highly anticipated games for the PS3!Well firstly I was very dissapointed...my first question was 'Is this it?'
As a keen fan of FPS and the PS3 proving that grand things can be done in this genre with COD4 I was dismayed to think this game has come from the design studios that have done such classics as Timesplitters and Goldeneye.

Graphically the game does not blow your socks off as I thought it would and looks like we are still in PS2 days with some of the animation, and the speed of the game seems slow.Gameplay is slightly stronger but only slightly as dare I say it even 'Resistance' plays better than this.

Online play seems quickly put together with only 6 maps!!This in itself is crazy as online gaming for this genre is so important for the longevity of the gaming experience.

Overall it's ok but that's not what we expect as consumers. We expect the boundaries of these games to be pushed to the limit with the use of the power of the PS3.I can't believe I payed outright for this game and should have not been sucked into the hype that has been built up about this game and will be more careful in the future.

Sorry but not recommended...you have been warned!!

3 out of 5 stars All mouth and no trousers   May 30, 2008

Once again, PS3 players have been sent a curve ball. Free Radicals previous efforts have all offered something almost spectacular, so hopes were very high. Almost every magazine informed us about the plot, the graphics, the game modes and the abundance of other features we were to be treated to. However, it seems it was all hype. Comparison will be made to other platforms exclusives and other First Person Shooters in general. So lets compare exclusives first. I have played Halo on the M$ Xbox and found it to be acceptable at best and dull at worst. This offering on the PS3 is no better, but not really any worse either.
Maybe we have all been blinded by the beauty and majesty of Call of Duty 4, a multi-platform offering. This remains, in my view, the most complete FPS avaiable. Many features that you take for granted in CoD4 are absent from Haze. There is no ability to sprint, meaning you have to amble across firelines, it never feels as though the team are backing you up, weapon accuracy seems erratic at best and there is only a limited number of multiplayer modes. Visually the game is marginally better then Resistance, but that was a launch game, so 18 months down the line, you would expect significant improvements both in the graphics and the AI. Sadly, despite all the delays and promises, the game still lacks polish. My initial reaction at launch said "steer clear", but I went against my better judgement expecting a glorious, exclusive PS3 game. Maybe next time I will trust my instincts and not the hype. I suggest you do the same. If you want a FPS, get CoD4. If you want another FPS, wait for Resistance 2. But please, don't think this will be the mind-blowing experience we were told it would be. As I said before, it's simply an average FPS that has no stand-out features.

5 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN RESISTANCE   May 29, 2008

All the negative reviews about this game are laughable-seriously.Im not biased because i play and like my 360 more than the ps3.
People raved about resistence fall of man-this game is more fun.IGN moaned about graphical issues-i honestly couldnt spot them. Also stated was that some of the graphics would look average on an early ps2 game-ive seen some lovely looking games on ps2,but graphically its better than resistance-which i thought was ps2 quality.(maybe i just have a great tv but ive seen much worse graphics on 360 and ps3)
The gameplay is fun but its just a shame you dont get to be a Mantel soldier in it longer-thats where i had the most fun.
People moaned the game is too short-it lasts the same roughly as Halo 3 on the same difficulties.
Havent tried multiplayer yet-so i cant comment-and yes the AI is sometimes foolish, but overall i loved it-i hope it sells and id love to see an expansion pack where you are just a Mantel soldier

1 out of 5 stars Please God Make it Stop!   May 29, 2008

Lets start with the good part. Haze is an absolutely brilliant story premise with it's chemically dependent soldiers waging dubious wars in foreign parts backed by a shadowy, all-powerful private military corporation. It has both sci-fi intrigue and uncomfortable echoes with current real-world events.

However make no mistake Haze is utter, utter drek.

I don't work in the software industry and in truth I don't really know how it works but I would imagine it's something like this: Sony really, really need a big hit exclusive game for the PS3, which at the time of writing is little more than a really expensive Blu-Ray player (in my house anyway). Free Radical are given a large money advance to start developing Haze. Things are going well and the deadline is still miles away. Sony start ramping up the hype surrounding Haze. Behind the scenes Free Radical are experiencing some problems and that deadline is getting closer. Sony's PS3 is being crushed by the 360 in Europe and the US and so they ramp the hype up to fever pitch, still not in possession of a Bioshock sized hit exclusive. Free Radical start to panic as the deadline draws near. Under pressure from Sony not to let the release date slip they abandon some of the lofty plans they had for the game. Time they hoped to spend smoothing textures, filling in detail and deepening the experience no longer exists.

Release date comes and tellingly they are too scared to give pre-release copies to the press.

Says it all doesn't it.

My first problem is that this simply isn't a next gen game. It's a PS2 generation FPS with tarted up graphical textures. Here's why: The whole point of the PS3/360 generation of consoles was supposed to be not just graphical advances but processing grunt too. In Haze you are supposed to be part of an army and yet your team consists of two or three other guys and your enemies never number more than four at a time. It's simply pathetic. Like Medal of Honour Frontline - and that was nearly a decade ago.

In the early levels when you can use the drug Nektar to heighten your fighting skills it is tempting not to do so as using it causes dreadful visual distortions on screen that are far too frequent to be anything other than nauseating and annoying.

For a supposed premier FPS the voice acting and some of the character models are terrible with the ambient character dialogue of the guerrillas grating particularly badly. The cut-scenes too are long and bland with uninspired dialogue and often nothing but the waxy, inanimate face of another character to look at.

The set-pieces blow chunks too with dull vehicles bumping about in small, linear levels quite contrary to the laws of physics. The scene in the copper smelting plant with the drop ship versus the missile turret would have been laughable even on the PS2. When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle yourself things don't get any better. While the control system is very good, connecting with the scenery results in the vehicle coming to an almost dead stop.

As if all this wasn't bad enough, the weapons are lifeless and uninspired, the visual effects lacklustre and the levels totally and utterly linear. The god-awful `play dead' feature is worthless and only the Nektar grenade feature managed to raise a smile.

Having paid the going rate for this game certainly didn't.

When I had only had my 360 for a few months I considered Ghost Recon - Advanced Warfighter a big disappointment but this is exponentially worse.

I really didn't want to be saying this but this game is getting sold as soon as I've finished the story mode (I want to stay with it just to see how bad it'll get) and sadly it is nothing more than another blow to the PS3 at a time when it really doesn't need it.
