I have to confess I'm not much of a Game user, so it has to be a bit special for me to get a game.I thought this was such a game, however I can't pretend not to be a little disappointed.Don't get me wrong, the graphics and atmosphere are great and I sat down full of anticipation for a great game.Like other reviewers have already said. Its slow and there are no shortcuts and I have to confess, I got a little bored. However I will not give up and try again at a later date, I just wish that the makers had thought a little harder about the game. There is a lot right about it, but room for improvement.Aimed probably at the younger market rather that an "oldie" like me.
Wonderful celebration of traditional eerie England September 8, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Excellent game. Makes you jump in the right places but not too scary that you have to stop playing. We played this on holiday in Cornwall on a laptop in a tent in the dark! Very atmospheric and thoroughly enjoyable, and the setting in Polperro is wonderful. I do, however, agree with others comments about slow movement and being unable to skip dialogue.
Good but flawed September 7, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have read the reviewers comments and agree with both the good and bad ratings. The puzzle aspect is excellent and so are a lot of the characters, but the slowness of the game is dire. I wish the speed of progress was better, I found the slowness of walking from one scene takes far to long and the repetitive set dialogue pattern most irritating, why do you have to go through the same set peice every time, as only missed dialogue needs repeating. This is the first game that my wife has also "had a go", so from this aspect alone its worth the money.
Slow game - lost interest August 29, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this game on a whim, mainly because the cover looked great! Whilst I have no doubt that the idea for the game is good, the actual play of the game is dire. You can't skip the dialogue, the movements are slow, and I lost interest pretty quickly. It is now stored on the shelf, where I suspect it will remain until I get fed up and have a clear out.
Great game August 15, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Having played other games by creator Jonathan Boakes, I was looking forward to playing The Lost Crown. I was not disappointed.
The good - What makes Boakes' games special is the beautiful attention to detail. The locations in the game, many of them actual places on the Cornish coast, are stunning. As always, the sound effects are awesome and help create a sinister mood throughout. The story is compelling and mysterious and I preferred having a character to move around/interact with than the 1st person vantage point in Darkfall (although, that was more scary). Good fun gadgets to play with and spooky characters kept me entertained for hours.
The Bad - moving from place to place is a little tiresome - no 'jump- straight-to' function such as a map. Dialogue cannot be skipped so phrases tend to be repeated, which is a bit annoying. Also, there could have been more puzzles in the game and less 'research'. The voice acting is a bit ropey at times but I've heard worse.
Overall, though, I was totally immersed in the story and the village of Saxton. Not as scary as Darkfall but thorougly satisfying. Let's have another...
