4 out of 5 stars PS3-The cold hard truth   May 14, 2008
4 out of 6 found this review helpful

I have owned this for 6 months now and this is what I think about it and how it stands up to its competitors, hope you find something useful.

On Quality and Reliability:

The machine is reliable, quiet and cool. Rumours about widespread problems are simply wishful thinking from its detractors. On the other hand games such as Assassins Creed have been buggy at release and early online problems for new games are common place. GTA IV also had problems on the original machines - but not the newer ones. On the brightish side these issues do get fixed, eventually.

On Games:

The library is really starting to fill up with good stuff but the 360 still has a much stronger library of existing games. However Sony is in a far stronger position on exlusives for the lifetime of the console. Sony owns about 20 software studios and Microsoft has 3. Microsoft doesn't look like it will manage to keep buying major exclusives from 3rd party devs. GeOW is unlikely to remain soley on the 360 after GeOW2 and GTAIV downloadable content looks like it will reach the PS3 eventually. Sony has a major advantage on Microsoft here unless you really want the 360 back catalogue, don't mind missing out on an ever increasing number of exclusives and can't wait for the PS3 equivalent of achievements.

On Performance:

Differences in game performance for major recent titles like COD4, DMC4 and GTAIV are tiny, not enough for anyone but the most hardened fanboy to care about. Even games like The Orange Box are still excellent on the PS3. If you are looking for the best performing console then there is currently nothing between them.

On Price:

Depends what you want. If you don't want wireless, online gameplay or a harddrive then the 360 is cheap and great value. Add these in and things don't look so good vs the PS3. Its an extra 45 for wireless and 35 per year on top of 190 for the 20GB premium console. For an extra 15 the PS3 gives you 20GB more hard drive, a blu-ray player and free online play. But to be fair Xbox Live is more reliable and you do get a rumble controller in the box which you don't yet with the PS3. If you want to upgrade to a 120GB drive on the 360 then you are looking at a corking 130 (on Amazon anyway). This is vs about 35 for 160GB on the PS3. You could get the 360 Elite which would give you 120GB and but on a feature by feature basis the PS3 is comfortably better value.

On Sony:

They are full of promises that never seem to appear: Home, In-Game XMB, Blu-ray portable copy for PSP, Play TV and entitlements, the equiv of achievements. It looks like many of their major projects are out of control, really disappointing. This is why I am giving it 4 stars, I want these features and I am sick of the delays. They are also definitely brewing up a cheaper and probably smaller model for release sometime in the future. Will it cause compatibility problems? I'll be surprised if the current models don't need regular patches to fix.

Vs the Wii.

I own this as well and you might as well compare apples to oranges. Owning one is simply not a replacement for owning the other. Like Sony, Nintendo own a lot of software development companies which keeps the experience unique. It also has a motion control system that neither Sony or Microsoft are going to be able to catch up with this generation. On the other hand the console doesn't have the power to produce the graphics and other gameplay enhancements such as realistic physics and destructable environments. The Wii won't ever be able to provide the kind of gaming experience the 360 and PS3 can to the user and vice versa.

The PS3 is a fantastic machine and I am delighted with but it is not yet fully realised. It has had so many problems in getting to where it is now and the delays really test my patience.

But it will always be Playstation for me

Bought this little beauty two days ago for the blu ray. I am a happy gamer and have loved my xbox360 upgraded to the elite and then by natural progression and because the hd -v- blu ray war was won by sony decided to purchase the PS3.

This is a wonderful piece of kit for gaming and for playing back those movies.

That having been said it is behind the 360 in a few ways. Download times bad, takes an age to update games. The controllers are good but charge through the ps3 via a cable, effective but not as quick as changing two batteries as with the xbox.

Sony have still to get their online gaming moving, to be honest not impressive at all.

The 40 gb hardrive is fine but I also like the fact that I have a massive hard drive on the 360 so I can download movies by the bucket load and keep pictures music etc for as long as I want to so I am not spending time clearing things off and then wishing I'd kept them.

I also connect my laptop computer to the tv via my 360 which is great, not sure whether or not I can do this through the ps3.

The 360 has loads of titles because its been on the market longer but Sony are now catching up in this area and I am presuming they will be head to head before long if not in front at some point.

In the war of DVD blu ray versus hi def Sony won. If you are buying to watch dvd this is the console for you. HD kit for xbox 360 amazing but they lost the war so I am presuming that the titles will dry up for my hd dvd drive.

I would not presume to be an expert nor advise which is the console for you but what I would say is that I have both and would recommend them both for different reasons. There are no winners or losers whichever console you purchase, they are both amazing machines and will provide hours of entertainment and pleasure whatever your passion.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic console, the way forward   April 27, 2008

Having deliberated and waited for months to get one of these when i fianlly got one i was so pleased. I was originally going to get a 60gb console and did wait months for an online shop to get them in stock, for them to only rocket the prices, i finally gave in and got the inferior 40gb console.

I was disappointed not to have the stronger console but now looking back it doesnt matter, i didnt buy the ps3 for playing ps2 games.

Anyway, the console, its FANTASTIC, in contrast to the 360 i think its better than it, and im not a fanboy, ive played the 360 and some parts are much better, in game messaging and the games that are available, but, the ps3 is just built much better.

No hardware problems, wifi built in amongst others. Also, the PS network is brilliant, given and accepted its not as strong as LIVE but so what, as long as there is 18 players for a game of Domination on COD4 im happy, i dont need 24 million people to be online!

Playing COD4 in HD is great and, with a great line up of games its only going to get better.

GTA4 (which will probably cause me to fail GCSE's) GT5, Haze, MGS4, Killzone 2 (all ps3 exclusives). These are some brilliant reasons to purachse a ps3, dont think Xbox has a line up of the 4 latter games near the ps3.

I would advise anyone to buy this, you certainly wont be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfull versatile machine   April 26, 2008

My High. Def. videos has got new life. This machine is DivX;-) certified and it plays H.264 mp4, XVID and more videoformats. Everything in High definition!!! It even plays high def from external hard drive through one of its two USB ports. I have played 25 megabit/sek. High Def film seamlessly through the USB-port. And if one likes a film from the external drive;- one push of a button and it is taken into the internal harddrive on the PS3!
This is awesome as all my High Def home videos are in the machine. There they can be wieved with animated icons which can grow as you swipe through them, so you can easily get a global wiev over them-awesome!

All Your DVD's will be upscaled beautifully to High. Def. quality. re-experience Your entire DVD-collection as digitally remastered!

Blu-Ray! The very best player. WiFi- it connected instantly to my little Airport Express which was on another floor!

It has updated 2 times from the internet!

Supercomputer! 7 cell-processors deliveres a speed of 4 GigaHertz!(How fast is Your PC?;-))

With a press of a button You take part in global science, when You connect to an array of online PS3's and a University researching gene folding!

Bluetooth controle with movement sensor. Blutooth turnes the PS3 on and of in a jiffy even with Your back turned! You don't have to point anyware with a bluetooth controller! Every TV should have one, I think. Instead of the infrared pointers.

And the PS3 games......High Definition full speed!-Split screen with two drivers.(buy an extra controller) And a big bunch of downloadable demo games with a hole lot to play-for free! Who needs obsolete PS2 game ability? Not me!

But what about the only 40 Gig? Well it can hold a lot, but an ordinary function supported by the manual is changing the harddrive. A 2 1/2" SATA harddrive can be fitted from the exterior within 5 minutes! One screw, and it comes out with a handle to grasp!

The menu inside the players beautifull color changing operating system asks:"Do You want to install another operating system?"-One push and it will divide the HD into another partition were You can install Linux for an instance. And You will get boot options as well.

I went to a special store for games. They had 2 plasma TV's like mine with XBOX 360 live games on them. The PS3's graphic is much, much better in my opinion. There is no comparison none what so ever.

Well it is the first month of me having it. It can hold my music and my pictures, but I have not gotten to it yet.

The only thing I would say is just buy it. You can make a million uses of it!
