It's so much quieter and cooler. October 31, 2007 126 out of 146 found this review helpful
At first sight the 40GB model doesn't seem good value when you can get the backwards compatability 60GB with two games for an extra 50, but the 40GB model contains the newer 65nm cell chip which uses less power. The best thing about the new 40GB is that it is so very much quieter and throws out a lot less heat, my old 60GB used to get very hot, but worse than that it was way too noisy which could be distracting at times. If backwards compatability with the Playstation 2 is important to you then the 40GB won't be any use to you. Me personally, I am very happy to sacrifice the BC and extra 20GB for the quieter cooler operation of the 40GB.
New PS3 entry level model October 23, 2007 35 out of 47 found this review helpful
The first thing that will hit you about this model is the price. It's lower. Usually these price drops come from economies of scale. Not here, it comes from stripping out features.
Gone is the PS2 support, make no mistake, that's a huge library of games now unavailable. Also gone is the card reader, not much of a loss there. Also lost is 20gb of space, which is a loss depending on if you intend to use this as a gaming machine or entertainment hub.
Sony's hand has been forced here because they had priced themselves out of the market and are firmly behind Wii and 360. So this is their answer. The upside for the consumer is that you can now play Blu-Ray and PS3 games at a lower price. You also get free online play unlike the 360 that will save you money in the long run.
However the PS3 has stalled due to the lack of good games, cancelled games and constant delays. My advice to consumers would be wait to see if there is a further price drop and see if the 'exclusive' games are worth paying out this much for. There is little advantage from buying this model right now.
Terrible of Sony October 22, 2007 13 out of 35 found this review helpful
I could list endless amounts of reasons why it gets 2 stars could have been 1, but it gets 2 because it still has impressive hardware in the box.
The letdowns all come from SONY, they are probably the first company ever to release a degraded model.
All the promises made by SONY on full BC, no need for vibration (yep its now coming back), going on and on about how amazing their console is but they forget what matters most...The GAMES.
Although Sony have finally brought in a price point that is affordable by many its rather depressing having to watch others snap up 60gb PS3's with 2 free games for only 50 more...
I feel sorry for anyone that ends up buying this degraded model, with no chrome tray and no embossed Playstation 3 logo and no moveable PS logo on the front...Everything about this model is CHEAP - something Ken was harping on about when he said 'Its cheap! Too cheap!' Well not it is cheap...And tacky - er.
I own the 60gb a month after launch great hardware but its let down by poor ports, delays and nonsense from Sony that continues to spoil their already ruined image.
Do yourselves a favour, try to grab the 60gb or if you are a gamer get an Xbox 360 Elite.
Why would anyone sane buy this version? October 21, 2007 15 out of 34 found this review helpful
Ok guys this is a trap. Buy into it and you are screwing us all. Let me explain... Sony are losing money on the PS3 due to the lack of decent games. The PS2 is making them loads and developers have realised this and are still supporting it. Sony are desperate to kill the PS2 off for this reason. The PS3 costs more to manufacture than they are selling it for and people are playing their old ps2 games on it instead of buying new ones. By releasing this version they are seeing if they can a)curb this trend and b) make you buy ps2s for backwards compatibility thus forcing you to buy ps3 only games for the ps3. If you buy this then theres a good chance they will screw us all over and remove backwards compatibility from all versions! The 60gb is out of production now so once its sold out thats it!
This machine isnt even a bargain - 300 with no games or a 60gb with backwards compatibility, 2 free games and 4 usb ports - you are being ripped off!
