Finally Matching the Price in the States... October 12, 2007 11 out of 36 found this review helpful
Only now with half the memory, half the USB ports and NONE of the backwards compatability.
Speaking of backwards compatability; Sony's excuse? That the PS3 will have a 65-strong library by Christmas. Unfortunately less than a dozen of those are actually worth buying and perhaps a quarter of that are exclusive. Not to mention it removes the option of trading in your old system for the still-pricey new one.
As hard as they try (assuming they're trying at all), Sony consistantly fail to get the balance right.
It's also worth noting the 60GB model is being phased out, leaving Europeans with this as their only option. If Sony continue to take this half-hearted approach to marketing the PS3, the system will be obsolete before it's worth its price-tag.
Not a bargain but whatever... October 10, 2007 13 out of 39 found this review helpful
This is the "new" ps3 model.TBH, i own the "old" 60 GB but since both are ,almost, the same machine i guess that i can write a review.
The ps3 is a nice videoplayer,no doubt about that.It plays Blu-ray (and can get software updates, meaning it will never have any problems with newer disks or loose features unlike most BD standalone players) and is a fantastic upscaling DVD.I bought it mostly for these features and i am quite satisfied.
Judged as a videogames' console, however, is not that great esp. at this ,still expensive, price. The only good exclusive game out now is resistance (a semi-decent Halo clone). The rest of the exclusive games released so far are trash. One look at gamerankings is enough. The only 2 games that i own are Resistance and motorstorm and i bought these 2 on launch day!!!Games like "Heavenly Sword" are mediocre at best.As for future line up,it's good ...if you like Metal gear solid and Gran Tourismo. The rest of the games are either not coming out for years (FFXIII,it isn't coming out in 2008 kids and you can quote me on that) or are of uncertain quality (LBP,Killzone,Infamous).Remember that games like Lair,Folklore and HS were also supposed to be "great" before release.Plus most multiplatform games are usually better on the xbox360.
The truth is that the xbox360 has seen more great releases in the last 40 days than the ps3 in its entire lifetime (Halo3,PGR4,Bioshock) so far.If you want a great movie player then the ps3 is for you.If you want to enjoy a vast library of AA and AAA titles today (and some of them pretty cheap) then you are better off with an xbox360 or just wait until the big guns (well the 2-3 ones anyway) of the ps3 arrive when the console will also cost far less than this "bargain" price of 299.
Lastly this new "bargain-priced" model doesn't have any form of backwards-compatibility.I am not the type of person that cares for this particular feature but i think that people should know what they are buying with this new "cheap" price, for better or for worse.
Oh and avoid the reviews that sound like they were written by viral marketers.
Amazing October 10, 2007 12 out of 20 found this review helpful
Now no one has an excuse not to enter the HD era 299.99. Sony had a later start to the market, but the games are coming, more and more AAA titles are making there way here, and after all is the only place you will get LittleBigPlanet, Grand Theft Auto 4, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear sold and Final Fantasy on one console, loads of great games are coming out this month, and in the months leading up to xmas, soon playTV will be out giving you TV that u can record like skyPlus.
Xbox360 is a great console (This Year) but dont let people fool you into thinking its the better console, because it's not. Get a ps3 and you will not be dissapointed.
Ps3 can have as many user accounts as you like for FREE online play, FREE downloadable demos, 360 you have to pay 39.99 a year for EACH USER!!!
Value for money? YES October 9, 2007 8 out of 14 found this review helpful
299 for the new 40gb PS3 represents great value, although the 60gb is only 50 more you need to remember that the real saving is much more, 425 was the original price, which many were still paying just weeks ago. so what do you get/loose: you get a top end, full HD, Blu-ray playing, cutting edge games machine. You loose 20gb, which for me would make no difference as my 60gb machine has already had its drive replaced for a 160gb which you will need to make this your entertainment hub. You also loose 2 USB sockets, but a few quid later and you have as many as you like with a multi-USB adapter - problem solved. so if your still not sure just check out the games list over christmas.....now at 299 there is no excuse to be left behind.
This is NOT good value for money October 9, 2007 18 out of 29 found this review helpful
This 40Gb model is NOT good value for money. The 60GB comes with two 'free' games and this has none, even if you value those games at 20 a piece(29.99 average individual selling price), the difference between the two conoles comes to 10, plus the 40GB model has only two USB ports not four, no memory card slots; which a lot of people (including myself) won't use, no ps2 support, and no ethernet (according to some sites). If this model cost 249 or even 279 then it would be good value for money. REMEMBER PEOPLE not only are you losing funtionality but you are also losing a couple of games for the sake of 50! Games including; Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, Ridge Racer 7, Resistance, Formula One and Genji.
