5 out of 5 stars Great system, and great blu ray player   July 16, 2008
15 out of 16 found this review helpful

There is so much noise over the PS3 vs Xbox debate on the internet, in reality both are great systems but PS3 is better for my needs and if your needs are like mine then i would recommend it too.

Before i get to the gaming aspect i will state that the Blu ray player is excellent, i decided to save for an HDTV to complement a next-gen system as it made sense. As Blu ray seems to have won the format war i was chuffed to have a free blu ray player in the system, the quality is fantastic and the movies are getting cheaper all the time, especially on amazon.

If you have an HDTV and want to take the step up to high def movies then this free blu ray player (which is crazy when you see how much they are normally) is a great reason to get it.

As a gaming system this is also really picking up speed, it does not have as many games as the X Box 360 (for obvious reasons) but the claim that there are no good games out for it is a joke. You only need to look through this site to see how highly rated many of these games are. Plus i bought the ps2 on release and it took 2-3 years for the console defining games to develop and i am sure we will see the same here. I personally am willing to wait for these 'defining games' and there is easily more than enough great games out now/coming soon to see us through.

I needed wireless access due to the position of my room in the house and the ps3 has one inbuilt. My connection has been great with a 4mb connection at all times on all days.

There is so much else on the ps3 including photo's and video storage, etc. As everyone says it is a media system. I have not really used these functions yet but it is great they are there and if you could make use then all the better.

So in conclusion if you needs are like mine, You want a reliable (hasn't given me any hassle at all) console with an ever expanding library of great games, the ability to watch blu ray films and wireless internet ability then this is a fantastic machine to buy. If you can make use of other functions then even better.

I cannot recommend this console more, the x box 360 is also a great console (when it works) don't let anyone tell you differently but i feel this console is the better choice overall, plus i believe that once game development for the PS3 is finally fully unleashed at it's potential then it will have the better games too.

1 out of 5 stars Online gamers? Dont bother with the PS3!   July 14, 2008

I've been a strict Playstation fan since the PS1, I bought over a dozen games for it, likewise with the PS2 and the PSP. Ive had a PS3 for about 4 months it rarely works online. It freezes before Ive made it into an online game. All buttons are inactive and I need to switch it off at the mains only for it to happen again. This happens in normal game play to. You only have to Google `PS3 Freezing' and several sites come up with many others seeking answers to this problem.
The only help from Playstation was 'Do you have a working internet connection' after Ive just emailed them from my home computer.
Over the years Ive defended Playstation until I'm blue in the face to friends saying Xbox is better. Ive not admitted my PS3 problems to my Xbox mates who happily play online games most nights without any problems!
Sony have balls up big time, very disappointed! I hate to say it, but, I wish I bought an Xbox. If your looking to waste 300, then buy a PS3!

3 out of 5 stars Still rough around the edges   July 10, 2008

Have owned PS1/2/3 and XBOX & 360 (as well as Nintendo bits and bobs)

Having cancelled my inital prelaunch order, I have finally bought a PS3; and immediately I was pretty disappointed.
Don't get me wrong, the PS3 is a fantastic looking piece of kit, and remains the cheapest route onto the Blu-ray ladder; but as a Games console I'm more than a little underwhelmed.

Sony don't seem to have designed the PS3 with either Gamers or the On-line experience in mind.

Let me expand:
No HDMI cable included - disappointing for the most expensive console on the Market.

No headset included.

Cheap feeling, lightweight "Sixaxis" controller - feels flimsy, no rumble (that'll be 39.99 extra!); why drop rumble which worked so well on PS2 and XBOX?

The truely AWFUL menu system; clunky, counter intuitive, menu after submenu after submenu - overcomplicating and miserable to look at.

On-line; click through several menus to reach the PSN store; which is totally underwhelming.
No movie downloads (360 has had Hi-Def movies to rent for nearly a year now!)
Difficult to browse or find anything.
Doesn't feel "integrated" like the 360's on-line experience.

Sony promises:
Home - where is it 18 months post launch?
Trophies; added with v2.41. Big deal; 360 had Achievements since 2005.

Games:
PS3 & and 360 pretty much the same.
A few exclusives either way (PS3: MGS4 (just a long cutscene), GT5)
Graphically and sonically pretty much the same; certainly no "killer-app" yet to show the supposed power of the Cell processor.

Pros:
Looks good
Blu-ray & WiFi built in.
On-line experience is free (but you get what you pay for...)

Cons:
Menu system still feels rudimentry and counter-intuitive.
On-line / PSN / Shop / Movies; very primitive.
Whatever happened to "Home"?
Only 40Gb HDD / 2USB / No PS2 compat / No HDMI cable / No Rumble.
No Headset

Think carefully when comparing with 360; as RROD problem solved with Falcon chipset, and M$ give 3yr RTB warranty.

SonyFanboys might not mention the Sony console-killing 2.40 update ;)

Summary:
I think I'll be keeping the PS3 for Blu-Ray duties, but there still much improvement needed for a slick on-line gaming experience. I wait with interest to see if Sony pull their finger out...

5 out of 5 stars negative people   July 7, 2008

why are all you people who put 1 star reviews about ps3 so negative,, Ps3s are awsome,, theres a lot more to do on a ps3 than on a xbox 360 or a wii,,just because the 40gb ps3 doesnt play ps2 games, does'nt really matter why play ps2 games when you can play ps3 games in high def with great picture quality, i would rather buy ps3 games than stick with my ps2 games, and anyway, thats wot the ps3 is for, new gaming experience, thats what sony is trying to do !!! so why stick around with the ps2 games?

5 out of 5 stars you won't regret this buy   July 5, 2008

It took me around 6-7 months to decide whether to buy the xbox360 or the PS3. My younger brothers have the xbox which is a fantastic machine with brilliant exclusives and great online play, I'd say the same for the PS3. the reason that I chose this console over the xbox is I believe it to be future proof. fantastic buy.
